V. .3 iw 'WNW v S Y' K K' This year the cheerleader committee came up with something new-a homecoming celebration com- plete with floats, queen, honor team, and dance. Much credit goes to Pat Warnock, general chair- man of the committees who spearheaded the proiect. In spite of the rain, which poured down in bucketfuls, over 6,000 people watched the parade of 30 floats. Cheerleaders Ann Linder, Patty Keger- reis, and Jeannine Mangold keep our spirits high. Members of the honor team of 1955 accept ovation at halftime-Bob Smith, Herb McKee, Ralph Lutz, Ward Weisel, Clyde Beeler, Harold Spahr, Jim Hardy, Jim Burkett, John Ray, Joe Hall, Max Aker, Coach Wallace, Jim Frakes. A big moment in the celebration came at half time. Results of the contest for queen had been kept strictly hush-hush until Beth Sherman, iunior, stepped forward to receive the honor of reigning over the 1955 homecoming. Also honored at half time were the undefeated, untied, unscored-upon Panthers of 1945. -lighlights Upper left: Pretty girls add color to the Root Beer Stand float. T1 GP-lllll1EM up a Football The 1955 football Panthers enioyed an im- pressive season under the expert coaching of Bill Goshert. Howard Berry was assistant coach, and John Conley, 1952 P.H.S. alumni and student teacher from Ball State, coached the freshman team. From the opening kickoff against Fairmount to the closing touchdown with Bluffton, the spirit of the squad and fans was high. At every home game, special half-time activities-.lr-Hi Night, Band Night, and Parents' Night-kept up our pep. The big homecoming game with Hartford City drew an estimated 2,500 spectators out into the rain to watch the Panthers come from behind lwith less than 2 minutes to playl to squeak out a 9-7 victory over the big Airedales. The team selected as honorary co-captains Bill Silvers and Art Kohler, and at the post-season ban- quet voted Dick Elmore and Jerry Strausburg the most valuable players. Wayne Norris, Bill Silvers, and Fred Pensinger made the all-conference first team, and Dick Elmore, Jerry Strausburg, and Fred Martin, the second team. Bill Silvers, high-scoring halfback, was chosen on the sports writers' all- state team. Again this year the Student Council was re- sponsible for many worthwhile proiects in our school. Activities began in September with the annual freshman mixer. During the year the council sponsored a locker clean-up, outside clean-up, courtesy week, lunch milk sales, fan busses, convocation and auditorium programs, the single-fund drive, and noon sock-hops. Among the varied programs sponsored by the auditorium committee were Charles King, baritone, the Powells, with their travelog of the Panama Highway: the Poe Theatre: and the Royal Scotts. Students participated in the observance of United Nations' Day and Lincoln's birthday and furnished the music for other programs. Among the monthly religious con- vocations planned by the convocation commit- tee, the Easter program was especially im- pressive. The talent show, discontinued since 1954, was presented again this year on March 9, and netted a neat sum for the treasury, as well as uncovering some heretofore unknown student talents. Door pieces of evergreen branches for each classroom gave our school a festive air at Christmas time, and the girls again collected clothing for the Crusade for Children. Helpful to the girls themselves was a series of three meetings: grooming, by girls who attended beauty school: personal improve- ment, by the Patricia Stevens Finish- ing School: and a fashion show. Y-Teen, as it is a part of the Y.W.C.A., also stressed religion in the movie One God and in a panel from Purdue representing different faiths, races, and nationalities.
