Secretary. and Mrs. Edna Saxman. Treasurer. Upon the shoulders of this group rests the responsibility ol' running a successful school system. ln addition to redccorating the building after last year's hre. the board purchased new green stage curtains and a beige cyclorama to replace the old-fashioned scenery and curtains which were destroyed. New library furniture. industrial tools. a calculator, and two electric sewing machines were also added to the equipment, Mr. Brubaker and Miss Fulton were delegated to select pictures with the Jennie Rae Hersh memorial fund. Completing three years in oliice. this board merits the appreciation of the entire community for their untiring public service. Edna Saxman it S .gjulaerinfenolenf an rinci a J I9 I9 f THE 1943 Seniors of Portland High School feel closer to Mr. D. S. Weller than probably any fu- ture graduating class can. It has been our good fortune to know him not only as our superintendent but also for one year as our principal. We appre- ciate the start he gave us as Freshmen and the contact we have enjoyed in the three succeeding years. As a teacher and as a friend, Mr. Weller will always live in our hearts. D. S. Weller Harold Brubaker A THOROUGH scholar, a sympathetic teacher, and a dyed-in-the-wool sports fan, Mr. Harold Bru- baker, now in his third year as Principal of Port- land High School, is endearing himself to all of the students. Seemingly endowed with a natural in- stinct for understanding the problems of young people and for handling them, he manages a smooth running and up-to-date school. In present day slanguage, He's on the beam! Page Thirteen gilding MISS Jane Louise Fulton, art su- pervisor in the city schools for many years who resigned for a well deserved rest. was greatly missed by all her students. QWe pay tribute to Miss Fulton in an- other section of our bookl. She was replaced by Miss Mae Louise Kohr from South Bend, a graduate of Indiana University. Readily ad- justing herself to the ways of P. H. S., Miss Kohr filled her po- sition with aptitude and efiiciency. MR. ROBERT JONES. who had been supervisor of instrument- al music last year. joined the Unit- ed States Navy immediately after school closed last spring. His va- cancy was filled by Miss Emily Stahr, who holds a B. M. degree from DePauw University. She di- rected the band and orchestra and gave individual lessons. Cheerful and friendly, Miss Stahr has made many friends around P. H. S. jadlhy MRS. William Reid left Portland High School to join her hus- band who is stationed with the armed forces in Florida. Her po- sition was filled by a rearrange- ment of classes rather than by a new teacher. Mr. Hiatt took over an English class, and Miss Stahr assumed the junior and senior high school music classes, while most grade school teachers managed the teaching of music in their own rooms. MISS Jeanne McCarty. physical education instructor in the Portland city schools for the past three years. was accepted into fhe VVomen's Army Auxiliary Corps and left for Daytona Beach, Flor- ida. after the first semester. She was replaced by Mrs. J. Russell Hiatt, a graduate of Ball State Teachers College with the class of 1941. In addition to physical edu- cation, Mrs. Hiatt also taught emergency arithmetic. eniom Row 1: Joy Ann Arn Title: Joy Quest: Radio tainer enter- Row 2: Patricia Badders Title: Pat Quest: College grad Row 3: Marvin Becker Title: Marv Quest: A buck private Row 4: James Browne Title: '43 Beau Bruin- rnel Quest: Connoisseur of men's apparel Virginia Atkinson Title: Ginny Quest: A girl marine Verner Badger Title: Butch Quest: Theatre man- ager William Boxwell Sorry you left us . . . Regulations on letter awards are very strict and the honor is given only where it is deserved. The varsity P is a symbol of co-operative attitude, hard work, ability, and many long hours spent on the basketball floor, the gridiron, or the baseball diamondg and a boy who has earned his letter wears it proudly as a badge of merit. Senior lettermen in basketball and football also receive lettermen jackets at the end of the year. Snap Editor John Glasgow, Art Editor picturedb To tell the truth, the Typhoon Staff has not had smooth sailing this year. What with athletic transporation difficult, shortages of material and labor at Hunt's, the engravers, and the printers imminent, and Mrs. Ste- venson's appendectomy completely unexpected, it wasn't at all certain for a while that there would even be a year book. However, Mr. Brubaker finally finding that we were financially able to publish some sort of book, Mr, Hunt, the engraver, and the printers eventually agreeing that they were commercially able to publish some sort of book, and Mrs. Stevenson ultimately feeling that she was physically able to publish some sort of book - the stafi and the theme were chosen the very same day. And that 'thurry-up motif has predominated ever since--and we have pub- lished some sort of book! All this detail of confession is not by way of apology Cwe think the 1943 Typhoon the best everll but only by way of explaining to those inquisitive souls who may question why there are fifty-six pages instead of sixty-four, or why we have used several old plates, or why the cover isn't made of genuine padded morocco leather.
