Students of diverse aptitudes and from various situations in life are finding clearer conceptions of the many practical uses which may be made of the knowledge and training gained in the pursuit of High School studies. They are also formulating ideals and acquiring habits conducive to proper adjustments in the social progress of which they are even now an important factor. Portland High School Teachers have made extensive preparation for their work. All regular high school teachers are graduates of higher institutions of learning. Several of them have done advanced professional work in the lead- ing universities of the country. They are personally interested in the mental, physical, and social welfare of their students. Inspiring leadership and trust- worthy guidance is the constant aim of the Superintendent, Principal and Teachers of Portland High School. The co-operative spirit of the High-School- Parent-Teacher-Association is a boon which will help to bring greater progress. J. C. In the it 2 first game away from home the Panthers took the Pennville Bulldogs across 1: H 28-27. Grimes and James were the big guns in this game and started the - scoring rally that won in the last half. Then, coming back home again, held the strong Saratoga team to three field goals and beat them 33-10. After four 1 straight wins the Panthers fell before the Union City team 33-47. Then, on to the finals, and who should we find but our old rivals, Madison, waiting for us. After leading us at the half 13-14 the Tom-Cats were chased up a tree and decisively beaten 35-22. Meeker, Elliott and Grimes led the Panthers in scoring' during the games. It was in this game that the Howling Hundred came into existence and put Madison up in the air. After a week's rest Hartford City came over, still thinking about the game over there and were sent back with 28 points while Portland gathered 35. Madison wanted to get even for the tourney defeat so we took them on again to show how it was done and give them a 43-33 beating. Elliott lead with 15 points. Backed by a large crowd of rooters the Panthers journeyed to Winches- ter and after a terrific battle were still 4 points to go. This was one of the fastest games of the year and the Panthers sure were setting a fast pace for a while. Incidentally, the score was 32-36. The next to provide entertainment for the Panthers were those hot Ridgeville boys. From the start of the game Portland had them on ice and easily won 47-24. In a rough game, in fact, almost a football game, the Panthers were beaten by Decatur 30-54. Elliott was high scorer for Portland while Decatur was led by Bell. In the last and best scheduled game of the year, Coach Farris unleashed his fighting Panthers on the unsuspecting Bluffton Tigers and after playing the best game of the year, walked off the floor with a 40-26 score in their favor. Meeker led the scoring with 6 field goals to his credit. After about two weeks' rest Portland entered the District Tourney, their first foes being Hartford City. This was their first game of the scramble for District honors. and after trailing at the half Portland came back, led by Elliott who scored the winning basket, and beat them 18-17. In the only overtime game of the year the Madison Tom-Cats got hot and ended Portland's season with a 25-30 defeat. At the end of the regular playing period the score was tied at 22 all. This is the purpose of the Portland lli-Y Club which was founded three years ago. This club has been active in sponsoring and supporting the activities of the high school. 'Phe club sponsored banquets for the football and basket-ball teams at the close of the season. The members of the club prepared the food for both of these banquets and each was a mammoth success. Four members of the club attended the State Older Boys' Conference at Lafayette during the Thanksgiving vacation. They had a fine time and learned many things con- cerning Y work. The Club was host to the District Older Boys' Conference March 31. About fifty-five delegates attended the conference from Muncie, Madison, Dunkirk, Pennville, Montpelier, and Berne. Cn April 14 the newly elected executives attended a State meeting in Indianapolis to help make plans for the eoming year 1928-1929.
