VonPalan: At the Homecoming celebration we had a float, on which we worked hard. Our candidate for queen was Judy Todd. During football sea- son, we sold at the Vermontville game and made a tidy sum on it. In the fall, we had a hayride party at Shot- well Bridge. We had a scrap iron drive, which made our finances higher. We had a bake sale in the middle of winter at the dairy. During basketball season, we sold at the Saranac game. The biggest event in our exciting year was our dance, which was called ‘April Showers.” We have all enjoyed our Sophomore year at Portland High and feel sure it would not have been a successful year without the help from our able sponsors, Mrs. Sherwood and Mr. Bullen. We the class of “54” are looking for- ward to being “upperclassmen” next year. Sitting: Mrs. Sherwood, Mr. Bullen. Standing: A. McCollar, Vice-Pres., M. Moyer, Sec., J. Selden, Pres., D. Early in the fall we had a hay-ride, where all the freshmen had an opportunity to get acquainted with each other. ''We chose Betty Moyer as our candidate for Home- coming queen, and she was a part of the queen's court at the Homecoming game and dance. Other activities included the usual ones of selling refreshments at a football game and a basketball game, holding a bake sale, and spon- soring a dance. We feel that we had a good year, and are look- ing forward to returning to P. H. S. as Sophomores in September 1952. Bottom Row: S. Sandborn, L. Howard, G. Hanley, S. Sines, M. Naseman, D. This organization is a member of “Student Council Association of Region 4” and the “National Associ- ation of Student Councils.” This year we have continued to have dances after the games and supervise the selling of cokes, potato chips, and candy. We sent delegates to the “Region” 4 meetings last spring and also this fall. The Officers This Year Were: President Connie Webert V. It will take some time to build them up. The Senior band played at all the home football games earlier in the year and performed some interesting formations on the field. They played at the Lake Odessa game where all our horns froze up in the “cool of the evening”. The band elected officers and they were: President 3)... ea ee D. It was quite successful. As usual the band went to Olivet on April 24th and enjoyed a wonderful experience from it. It took a lot of rehearsal to shape up the music, including our Thursday night rehearsal which was started in the second semester. The vocal department was cut down to just the Girls Glee Club. We hope to get better sched- uling next year so that we can build up once again. There was a joint Band and Vocal concert held on April 18, 1952, and it was enjoyed by one and all. This was Mr. Drago’s first year in Portland. He is a graduate of Michigan State College. The Band and Glee Club teel that they have really accomplished something this year under his direction, and we hope that next year our whole music department will be larger. Row 1: R. Shell, J. Baily, the relative of most of them has disappeared. They ques- tion the Mr. Bailey’s servants in their struggle to solve the mystery of the place, the cabinet that is death to open, the hooded figure that appears from time to time, the ghost that creeps from the shadows, the monster that lurks and threatens — and back of it all the insistent, dull, throbbing signal of the mysterious drums. The outstanding achievement of the year was the judging contest held at Michigan State Col- lege in June in which the Dairy team won an “A” award and First in State. They represented Michi- gan at the National Contest at Waterloo, lowa, where they won a silver award. Members of the team were John Addington, Dale Carpenter, and Nelson Gage. In August Dave Leik, Carl May, Leo Murphy and Dale Carpenter went to Stoney Lake near Hart, Michigan to an officer training camp. Numerous awards were given FFA members for exhibits shown at the lonia and Michigan State Fairs. Our Educational Exhibit received an “A” rating at the lonia and State Fairs and at Michigan State College. Eight senior members and advisor Clark Bullen spent three days in Chicago during the Inter- national Livestock show. Besides attending the Livestock Show the group went on a tour through the Swift Packing Company and Livestock yards, claimed to be the largest in the world. They also visited the Field Museum of Science. Ht oe Top Row: J. Fineout, T. Pearl, H. Vogt, K. McCrumb, A. Vogt, D. Rogers, A. Baker, J. Walker, M. Hoort, J. Emmons, M. Marvin. Row Two: C. Jr. Bus. Sports Ed. We started planning our yearbook early in the fall with Mrs. Piercefield aft our Sponsor and Joanne Irrer as Editor. Later, the Annual Staff was chosen and three Jrs. were elected to work with us so they will have an idea of how to organize their own yearbook. They were Janean Sandborn, Gordon Kelly and Jean Mellstead. We are proud of the “1952 Cardinal” and hope you will all enjoy reading it. J. Irrer J. Sandborn OAMNU FYEF7POONTZZO . Bailey . Linebaugh .
