(2) Lee Swarthout (2) C. Teneyck Plans for our yearbook got underway early in the fall, with Mrs. Pierce- field as our sponsor and Dawn Lange as Editor. This year with careful planning it was possible to make the Annual Staff self supporting with a small amount of money left to put in the treasury towards future annuals. The Senior Class has worked in complete co-operation with the staff which was selected at the beginning of the fall term, to make the ‘‘5] Cardinal’’ a success and one that we are proud of. This book tells a story, the story of P. H. S. 1950-51. We hope that all who read it will enjoy this story as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. 1 Three Juniors were chosen to represent their class on the Annual staff that they might have a clearer idea of how to organize their yearbook next year. They were Joan Irrer, Carol Traynick, and Don Cassel.

While there we got some new ideas for the paper. Three of the staff members, Alice Sumner, Joan Smith, and Betsey Stewart wrote articles for Young Editor’s Day. These articles appeared in the Lansing State Journal. The Portlight was published every two weeks and continued to be set up in the three column style. Mrs. Piercefield was the sponsor again this year and we would like to thank her for guiding us so ably.

SENIOR PLAY “DESPERATE AMBROSE” L. Meyers, R. Roberts, E. Tower, B. Stewart, J. Hanley, D. Lange, Mr. Lee, B. Eddy, L. Swarthout, B. Moyer, R. Lehman, J. Stewart, D. Mauren, D. Willemin, B. Schrauben, R. Pung. JUNIOR PLAY “THE DARLING BRATS” Cynthia Darling, who supports her young orphan sisters and brothers, is greatly per- turbed because Aunt Agatha, a comely young widow, lavishes expensive gifts upon them and is spoiling them rotten. Cynthia determines to get Agatha’s influence away from the Darling children (who, by the way, are far from darling — they are perfect Ititle hellions!) by marrying her off to Cynthia’s boss, Appleton Crabb, an erascible old bachelor. Agatha is romantically interested in John Henry Judd, an impoverished cow- boy-rancher, with whom she corresponds but hasn’t seen since childhood. Tess also is determined her aunt shall marry the wealthy Crabb, and she inveigles Spike, her boy friend, to masquerade as Judd and cut such wild western capers that Agatha’s infatu- ation for Judd is instantly squashed! But young Hank and Babs are equally determined Aunt Agatha shall marry the cowboy, because they are crazy to live on his Arizona ranch. The tricks these two brats play upon Crabb and Agatha in order to make them hate each other kept the audience screaming with mirth. They gave Crabb a synthetic case of “B.O.” by hiding Limburger cheese upon his person. They touched Agatha up with “Fun Fest Itching Liquid’ and made Crabb believe she has the seven-year itch. How Agatha, with the assistance of handsome Jack, the gardener, turned the tables on Tess, Hank and Babs provided the audience with such a festival of laughter that it will be long remembered at Portland High.
