S. in the fall of 1947, 80 bewildered Freshmen. Under the guidance of Miss Wilcox, we soon settled down. Our Officers for the year were President, Gordon Seal; Vice-President, Howard Bills; Secretary, Barbara Cross; and Treasurer, Ted White. As Sophomores we gained in importance although we were lower in enrollment. There were 76 of us in the class. Mr. Lee was our sponsor. Our class candidate, Pat Howard, was elected Homecoming Queen. We sold refreshments at games to boost our treasury. The class officers were President, G. Jay Rottman; Vice-President, Bernice Schrauben; Secretary, Mary Ellen Fox; and Treasurer, Nancy Green. In our Junior year the boys took over our leadership with Gordon Seal, President; Allen Mellstead, Vice-President; John Stewart, Secretary; and Dick Mauren, Treasurer. We sold Review Observer subscriptions, sponsored dances, and sold at the games. We won the annual magazine sale from the Seniors (plus a $10 bet). Betsey Stewart, one of our classmates, represented Miss Portland and was in the Snow Queen’s court at lonia. Four very important events of the year were our class rings, which we received in December; Junior Play, “Aunt Hetty Hits Her Stride” the J-Hop, “Dancing in the Dark”; and the Junior and Senior Banquet in June. Our co-sponsors for the year were Miss Shepherd and Mr. Lee. At long last, we reached the top—Seniors! We now numbered 67. Our class officers were President, Allen Mellstead; Vice-President, Gordon Seal; Secretary, Elaine Tower; and Treasurer, Dick Mauren. The first big event was the Senior Prom, “Shine on Harvest Moon.” Then the play, “Desperate Ambrose.” Our candidate, Rose Mary Fedewa, was elected Homecoming Queen. The Senior Carnival was better than ever. This time we lost the magazine sale and the $10 bet to the Junior Class. Besides these major events there was the graduation features, Senior luncheons, bake sales, raffles, selling re- freshments at games and sponsoring dances after games. The Annual speaks for itself. Then came the big trip. And last, but not least Commencement. We were all a little sorry when it was over. These four years of high school have been happy ones. This organization is a member of the “Student Council Asso- ciation of Region IV” and the “National Association of Student Councils.” We have worked hard this year to develop a greater interest in the Student Council by the student body. Projects this year have included the building of a concession stand at the football field, a complete noon hour activity program, a Christmas program and dance and an honor assembly. We again supervised the selling of cokes, chips, and candy at Athletic Contests and provided for dances after the games. Larry Swarthout was in charge of the parade. At night we gave the Homecoming Hop with Jerry Warren’s orchestra. There was a very good turn out. Cheerleaders On November 4, 1950, we went to the Indiana vs. State game. On November 11, 1950, we ventured to Ann Arbor to the University for a cheerleading clinic. We were shown different ways to lead a yell and how not to lead a yell. We also took part during half-time with two thousand other cheerleaders from Michigan. Jimmy Alexander, Larry Swarthout and Joe Buck were the boy cheerleaders during football season. | FIRST ROW: C. Pennington, J. Myers, D. Bailey, G. Pline. SECOND ROW: J. Kirscherman, R. We elected our officers which are: President... ..Margaret Linebaugh Vice President...... Gordon Kelly Secretary and Treasurer Elaine Champlain During the first few weeks of school, one of our classmates, Gayla Hendee, was striken with polio and had to leave us. In keeping with the example set last year by our Club, we again won first prize on our float in the Homecoming parade. This time we depicted a Spanish Market. Shown in this was a senor taking a siesta, many senoritas as the vendedoras, racks of blankets, flowers, pottery and even Spanish music. Some of our social events were, a hayride, a Christmas party and a skating party. Since our treasury was well stocked from last year, we only sold candy bars one day a week. We would like to thank Mrs. Piercefield for helping us during this successful year. FIRST ROW: Mrs. Cunningham, P. Lakin, B. Stewart, M. Davenport, D. Tiffany. SECOND ROW: J. Buck, M. Fedewa, C. At Christmas time Shirley Burman entertained the class at her home and everyone had a good time exchanging gifts, playing games, and refreshments were served. February 10, the club sponsored a square dance in the local gymnasium. The big event of the year was the Roman banquet served in true Roman style. Many members exhibited grain and livestock at the lonia Fair, Eagle Fair and the State Fair in Detroit. The educational exhibit prepared by the Agriculture IV class won an “A” rating at the State Fair. In October we entered the soil judging contest for F. F. A. members in this area of the state. Bill Lanz placed first of all the contestants. The live- stock judging team of Barry Moyer, Bill M oyer, N. Gage, and J. Addington placed first among F. F. A. teams at the lonia Fat Stock Show. In November, ten of the F. F. A. members spent three days at the International Livestock Show and other points of interest in Chicago. At the District Contests, D. Leik placed second in the speech contest and the Demonstra- tion team of N. Gage and L. Murphy placed third. D. Leik and G. Krausz were selected to represent the chapter at the State F. F. A. Convention in the Spring. At this convention Bill Moyer, Nelson Gage, John Addington and Lawrence Krausz were awarded the State Farmer Degree. FIRST ROW: Mrs. Piercefield, C. Wilcox, M. Peake, C. Portlight After the staff was organized this fall we went to Michigan State College on October 18th to attend the Journalism Conference. While there we got some new ideas for the paper. Three of the staff members, Alice Sumner, Joan Smith, and Betsey Stewart wrote articles for Young Editor’s Day. These articles appeared in the Lansing State Journal. The Portlight was published every two weeks and continued to be set up in the three column style. Mrs. Piercefield was the sponsor again this year and we would like to thank her for guiding us so ably. Annual Staff Editor. ..... (8) Dawn Lange Business Manager . (6) G. Seal Class Editor . . Teneyck Plans for our yearbook got underway early in the fall, with Mrs. Pierce- field as our sponsor and Dawn Lange as Editor. This year with careful planning it was possible to make the Annual Staff self supporting with a small amount of money left to put in the treasury towards future annuals. The Senior Class has worked in complete co-operation with the staff which was selected at the beginning of the fall term, to make the ‘‘5] Cardinal’’ a success and one that we are proud of. This book tells a story, the story of P. H. S. 1950-51. We hope that all who read it will enjoy this story as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. 1 Three Juniors were chosen to represent their class on the Annual staff that they might have a clearer idea of how to organize their yearbook next year. They were Joan Irrer, Carol Traynick, and Don Cassel. SENIOR PLAY “DESPERATE AMBROSE” L. Meyers, R. Roberts, E. Tower, B. Stewart, J. Hanley, D. Lange, Mr. Lee, B. Eddy, L. Swarthout, B. Moyer, R. Lehman, J. Stewart, D. Mauren, D. Willemin, B. Schrauben, R. Pung. JUNIOR PLAY “THE DARLING BRATS” Cynthia Darling, who supports her young orphan sisters and brothers, is greatly per- turbed because Aunt Agatha, a comely young widow, lavishes expensive gifts upon them and is spoiling them rotten. Cynthia determines to get Agatha’s influence away from the Darling children (who, by the way, are far from darling — they are perfect Ititle hellions!) by marrying her off to Cynthia’s boss, Appleton Crabb, an erascible old bachelor. Agatha is romantically interested in John Henry Judd, an impoverished cow- boy-rancher, with whom she corresponds but hasn’t seen since childhood. Tess also is determined her aunt shall marry the wealthy Crabb, and she inveigles Spike, her boy friend, to masquerade as Judd and cut such wild western capers that Agatha’s infatu- ation for Judd is instantly squashed! But young Hank and Babs are equally determined Aunt Agatha shall marry the cowboy, because they are crazy to live on his Arizona ranch. The tricks these two brats play upon Crabb and Agatha in order to make them hate each other kept the audience screaming with mirth. They gave Crabb a synthetic case of “B.O.” by hiding Limburger cheese upon his person. They touched Agatha up with “Fun Fest Itching Liquid’ and made Crabb believe she has the seven-year itch. How Agatha, with the assistance of handsome Jack, the gardener, turned the tables on Tess, Hank and Babs provided the audience with such a festival of laughter that it will be long remembered at Portland High. sno FIRST ROW: C. Braendle, C. Webert, C. Wilcox. Girls’ Basketball This year’s girls’ basketball team was the first at Portland High in a number of years. Miss Shirley Wells coached the team. Although the season’s record was not very impres- sive — two wins against six losses — it was a start for the girls and next year they hope to improve upon that record. New uniforms of red and white were purchased at the beginning of the season. On February 22 the Style Shop sponsored a Style Show Benefit for the team. They realized a good profit which will go for new uniforms and equipment. Football The Red Raiders compiled a record of 8 victories and 1 loss during the 1950 football season. They took second place in the Tri-C Con- ference. Center, Ted White; tackle, Bill Moyer; and halfback, Carl Schalow were named to the Tri-C all conference team. The Portland backs were led by Howard Bills who gained 812 yards, Carl Schalow gained 455, Sam Graft 106, and Bill Moyer 88. Scores were made by: H. Bills 72, C. Schalow 42, T. Feldspauch 18, G. Bills 17, B. Munson 12, G. Seal 7, S. Graft 6, B. Moyer 6, T. Seal 6, R. Denny 1. Beemer ; A The Junior Class started the year out by making approximately $1,100 on our magazine sale, which earned us an Award of Merit from Crowell-Collier Publishing Company. We celebrated by having a turkey dinner. Our class rings arrived in November, which made us feel more like Juniors. To raise our treasury fund we sold pennants, had a Pancake Supper and put on a St. Patrick’s dance. The big events of the year, naturally, were the Play, April 19 and 20; the J-Hop, May 8, and the Junior-Senior Banquet on June 5. 43 ba . 0 Sym A a B. Almy R. Babbitt J. Balderson J. Bates R. Howard SECRETARY G. Schwab SPONSORS Mrs. Cunningham Mr. Bullen Snaps The Sophomores started out the year by electing new officers. At the Homecoming we had a float, on which we worked hard but did not win anything. Our candidate for Queen was Barbara Almy. During football season we sold at the Saranac game, and afterward had a dance, making about $25. October 21 was the date of our English party. It was a hayride, and we went to Greenview Point. We had our Christmas Party in Mrs. Cunningham's room, where we danced and ate and everyone had fun. On January 26, we sold at the Nashville game, at which we made $22.71 and gave it to the Student Council. We had a Bake Sale February 3rd. Many of our class members have been ill this year, and we have taken up collections for them. We have now got approximately $120.00 in our treasury. We are all looking forward to our Junior year! 45 J. Alexander M. Barratt L. Beirstetel ‘reshmen C. Bennett L. Braley S. Burman R. Lindsley V. Linebaugh R. Lumbert T. Burman G. Buck H. Burch C. Our first financial venture was selling hot dogs, potato chips, coffee, and coke at the Woodland football game on September 18. The first Saturday in December the girl members furnished goods for a bake sale. On February 23 the class sold potato chips and coke at the Olivet basketball game, turning the proceeds over to the Student Council. The bake sale by the boys was held in May. Our Christmas party was one much enjoyed by everybody. All in all, we feel we are now quite well acquainted and ready to advance into the tenth grade next fall. 47 FIRST ROW: J. Keefer, R.
