Lawrence Adgate and Lyle Wheeler defeated Tom Pung and Bill Shattuck by a vote of 5 to 1 for the Presidency and Vice-presidency of the United States. The Kremlin has announced its acceptance of Bill Reed as the American Ambassador to Russia. Ambas- sador Reed’s reaction to this news was quoted to be favorable. The newly created cabinet post, The Department of Female Intuition, has as its head, Jackie Sandborn. Secretary of Female Intuition, Sandborn has announced a launching of a nation-wide campaign to rid the country of redheads. THE NEWS OF TODAY! Those lovable spinsters, Eleanor Gensterblum, Bernie Thoma, and Ruth May, are starting their own little orphanage soon. Famous dietition in charge of all delectable morsels at the institution will be Ruth Almy. The United States Forestry Department reported its success with the innovation of rubber plantations in Michigan. Chief Forester Bill Hesse, the instigator of this plan, has announced another similar idea, the graft- ing of banana plants with sugar cane. Larry Fineout was appointed by Forester Hesse to carry out this plan. Professor Allen Alexander has founded a new government that provides for vegetarianism. Backing his campaign is carrot eating Dick Arnold, who is now scaling mountain peaks to prove that carrots supply energy. The current toast of Broadway, Jennie Eddy, recently opened in “If You Want Me, Just Whistle,” with Jim Leik as her leading man. Jeanette Cotten and Eleanor Dutcher stop the show with a sparkling rendition of “Kiss the Boys Goodby.” Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nelson (formerly Betty Fryover), Mr. and Mrs. Don Deuel (Formerly Beverly Urie), Mr. and Mrs. Berle Barrus, (the former Irene Hartwick) and Mr. and Mrs. Alger Daggett, (the former Barbara Smith) are having their annual reunion tomorrow night at Carnegie Hall. Hal, “Dizzy” Merrill. “With this addition to our pitching staff,” says Mr. Van Houten, “we have an excellent chance of winning the pennant again this year.” The renowned and beloved bubble d ancer, Marilyn Richards, has just divorced her fifth husband. By selling refreshments at a football game and a basketball game, we earned some money for our class treasury. At Christmas time we enjoyed a party. All 84 of us are looking forward to next year as sophomores of P. H. S. FRESHMEN NOT PICTURED—B. Northrop, J. Eddy, C. Dodds and B. Sandborn. 18 ROW 1—B. Ackerson, K. Ackerson, R. Arens, D. Spohn and Ray Hendee were elected to the positions of co-editors and the staff was chosen with much consideration. It took some time for the staff to choose the printer and to select the covers, but all was well underway by the beginning of the second semester and as soon as our pictures arrived, the staff began to make the layouts. THE STUDENT COUNCIL Our Student Council is again this year a member of the National Association of Student Councils. The student body chose as president Bill Willemin. Under his fine leadership the council has had a busy and worth while year. The outstanding project was the supervision of the noon activity program. The ping pong tournament, in charge of Lowe!] Anderson, proved an interesting innovation. The Student Council members were hosts to all high school students at a Christmas Dance in the gym the afternoon before Christmas vacation. The highlight of this event was the large decorated Christ- mas tree and Santa Claus. We co-operated with the Cheerleaders for Portland High School’s first homecoming on October 25th. We hope this will be an annual event. The Student Council had charge of arrangements for the Teen-Time Dance sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Our paid assemblies were well attended. At the Student Council Honor Assembly this spring, awards were presented to students outstanding in Citizenship, Scholarship, and Activities. Members this year were Connie Webert and Thelma Seldon, representing the freshmen; Betsy Stewart and Homer Peacock from the sophomores; Gloria Leach, Marvin Seal, and Tom Buck from the juniors; and Virginia Spohn, Bill Reed, and Ray Hendee from the seniors. Representation from the school organi- zations were Bill Willemin from Band; Pat Lawless, F.F.A.; Lowell Anderson, Varsity Club; Carolyn Sullenger, Home Ec. Club; and Marilyn Richards, vocal music. 26 ec rr SE MAJORETTES—G. Reed, B. Buckley, M. Mellstead, N. Moyer, J. Myers. ROW I—Mr. SEN IOR R A N D Lee, Director; E. Kranz, V. Spohn, D. Lang, E. They have sponsored many events, including the swell home- coming last fall at the Dimondale football game. A queen and her court were chosen before the event, and in the afternoon a parade, led by the band and fol- lowed by floats from most of the organizations, was staged in her honor. Pat How- ard was chosen queen and her attendants were Rosie Vroman, Gloria Leach, Con- nie Wilcox and Marilyn Mullins. During the half at the football game, Harold and Allen crowned the queen, and the members of the court were presented corsages | of red roses For the event, the cheerleaders also published a Homecoming Magazine which they sold at the game. ; | | Other projects included the annual color day and the securing of new uniforms for the boys. ; During the basketball season Janet Snider, a third grader, became the mascot. She has a uniform of her own, and has helped to lead many of the yells. 36 : Eales, Sekhar wiht Eo ip nA i By Rta SA le Spekistee my GEE ba ae EE OS ene et eee § Lge Le ey, a Nile ok od : a RSPR Hite megs ake ok ne i hige ee z ae rE ees i Bo BO ae go Wa ater ? Coaches Pernert and Hus- beck expertly overcame the difficulty of having a light team and quickly welded together a powerful fighting unit, both offensively and defensively. By defeating the other five league teams, Portland became the Tri-County League Champs. Portland players making the all-conference first team were Arnold, Goodwin, Graft, and Lawless. Reed and Willemin were selected on the second team while Hunt and Anderson received honorable mention. Bill Reed was elected honorary captain at the end of the season and was selected as Third string guard on the Detroit Times All-State team while Dick Arnold was given honorable mention on the Detroit Free Press and Detroit Times All-State teams and was also named second string fullback on the Free Press Class-C All-State team. 38 Ri ME ec eeaee ae Hilo dau Ubisoft tie i Piri Tel ie aeeeamaas ] | | FOOTBALL RECORD | ROMiGnich : a2), ae ate, 0) ay Mn ae Ae eee 26 Beye gee aes 3 a ene en 6 PORBIONG! ihre sss Gc) cee pe erence eteOM gre? aiiahetn fi 2 oot gs eA ik eal) 0 YR a ree, ge 13 ' PEOrtiGnri: See. cpl MEME et tents Pg DEVINE.
