Playing a game and hoping to win, Victory istaken by your own kin. Trying to gracefully step down the stairs, Wanting to walk here, but ending up over there. As years go by and looking back. There's nothing more funny than all of that. lf you can't stand up on your own two feet, Just laugh and think Thats defeat! . IMAP! XC? A will to try and accomplish the best, along with frustration and distress, Feelings of strength crept over life, when pulling through with all our strife. Like a dove beginning his first flight, soaring through the sky with all his might. A flower beginning to see outside, spreading it's arms to every side. A doe with her newly born fawn, means time can be either short or long. As times go by and we have learned frustration, the only way is to have determination. . Winning to keep us number one, was exciting and great through havingfun. The hopes from above can be filled with love, while giving and living, as free as a dove. We shared itall as an equal one, Shining bright like the rising sun, Expressions were there from everywhere, Undecided emotions could never compare, Winning and knowing we were good, Brought Victory to us and together we stood There's funny things that no one can beat, Those times of laughter and defeat, Determination gave us a will to try, To be proud and gold our heads up high, When we were shouting and yelling about, Out spirit was the greatest without a doubt, Put it all together like in a picture frame We know this campus will remain the same, Our heart soaked in the precious memories, Of knowing we stood in total Unity! . ,U B , n.,.1..f .... 3 . , i I s V 3 4 x w 1 Observe always that everything is a result of a change, and get use to thinking there is nothing nature loves so well as to change existing forms and to make new ones. Mrs. DePaoli has been a member of the Porter- ville High School English Department for 13 years. Throughout those years she has consistently shown the enthusiasm, dedication, and patience which her students appreciate as much today as they did when she first began her teaching career. included in Mrs. DePaoIi's busy teaching sched- ule are classes in propaganda studies, creative writing, and journalism. lnvolved in her work, Mrs. DePaoli may often been seen amidst the turmoil of room T-4, tallying a propaganda poll, aiding a perplexed student, or inspiring her crea- tive writers to new heights. She has been nicknamed the elf by her jour- nalism students because of the late night hours she spends assisting them in their journalistic endeavors. More than a teacher, Mrs. DePaoli is a warm and sincere friend. For this we give her our special thanks. Dedication ' ' 5 J1- ar 'wwf IS x D 5 JM X I 3, YI! ,11- Us cats really had an out-of-sight time during B-Bop week! From the very beginning there was never a dull moment. From real red lipstick, to duck-tail hair cuts: From full swirl skirts to rolled up jeans, Nostalgia week went swinging on. The dance contest was really nifty, Ole B-Bopping Beagle and Foxie Faller sure put down some groovy dance steps, they sure deserved to be the winners! Then us cats who went to the sock hop on Friday, really cut our- selves out to have a peachy time and boy did we. Too bad Elvis couldn't have been there to see us! All I can say is it was the grooviest, coolest, out-a-sight week that has ever hit P'vilIe High! Let's hope to see it again next year too! The sound of buzzing wheels and screeching screams started out homecoming week this year. G.A.A. sponsored the first event of the week, a skateboard race, which really got everyone excited! There were many Funny Faces made at the sack races, put on by F.F.A. That was one event that really went over with a leaping success. The Junior class got in the splash of things! They put on a water balloon toss which went over very wet! The week was brought to a close with the annual Powder Puff Football game sponsored by our great Student Council. The Sophomores and Freshmen vs. the Juniors and Seniors brought on a show that was just grrrreat! - 49 1 f P2553 MINGQ 22 A- VARSITY-BOTTOM ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: R.Ramirez, J.McDonald, R.Urmy, R.Barker, IVl.Vickers, IVl.Styles, M.Lent, T.Reece, T.Hagen, W. Just as in life, the most important thing is not the triumph but the struggle. The Olympic Creed The 1975 Varsity football team coached by Donn Rennwick and as- sistant coach Tiny Hill finished the season in a tie for second with a record of 2-1-2 in the EYL. The highlight of the season was a 14-13 upset over league champion Tulare Western. This was the passingest Panther team in the history of the school and was led byMost Valuable Player and All League performer Marty Medrano, Best Offensive Back and All League Quarterback Thad Reece, Best Offensive Line- man-Joe McDonald, Best Defensive Lineman Steve Poteet, Best De- fensive Back-Easy Contreras and Most Inspirational-Armando Mar- quez to an outstanding season. FR-SOPH The Frosh-Soph Kittens were coached by Dave Frederick to a 3-1-1 record and second place in the league for an excellent season. They were led by Most Valuable Player and Best Back Raymond Varela, who had over 500 yards rushing. Along with Varella the Captains were Best Lineman Danny Flores, Linemen Jay Meyer, and Ricky Rodriguez. Also recognized as outstanding players were Best Linemen Phillip Carlton, Leading Scorer Danny Wilson with eleven touchdowns, Best Defensive Back- Mike Camarena, and leading re- ceiver Luis Escalante. JV The Junior Varsity football team, coached by Greg Boyer, had a poor season when you consider their wonflost record. It was a building season and many fine players were developed throughout the course of the season. Such outstanding athletes as Mike Webber, Most Valuable Player and Best Back Dan Hooverwill move up and help the Varsity to a very successful season next year. Both were team cap- tains and showed great leadership ability. Other awards went to Henry Martinez-Best Hitter, Jeff Cotta- Most Inspirational, and Matt Vick- ers-Best Back. With this caliber of players moving on to Varsity Por- terville's football future looks bright. This years C football team coached by Bob Perez experienced an excellent season. A total of 56 boys played throughout the sea- son and were very competitive and highly spirited. Outstanding play- ers included Manny Beltran, Robert Gabinete, fMost Valuable Playerh, Willy Garcia, Brian Bun- yard, Joel Sierra, and Eddie Rod- riguez. This has been the biggest turnout for C football in the his- tory of the school, and a success- ful year it was. 1 Y , I I 26 ! Porterville High School's first gymnastics team competed this year. Porterville was the only school in the EYL with members having no experience in competition. Porterville High School Junior Varsity team fin- ished second in the league, an excellent record for a beginning team. Each girl must compete on the Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, Floor Exercise and Vaulting. The following awards were presented at the fall sports banquet: Most Valuable, Jennifer Rafferty, Most Inspirational-Dana Hansen, Most Improved-Kim Grundies, Distin- guished Achievement-Shari Tran- ter. Seniors on the team are Tracy Gill, Jennifer Rafferty, Lisa Ralphs and Tamara Watts. The 1976-77 season will mean the addition of a varsity team. The Varsity team will not be a full twelve member team because more experience is needed before making that vault. Returning team members ex- pected to do well inthe league are as follows: Dana Hansen, Mary Hig- gins, Carla Carter, Wendy Rambo, Charlotte LaPresta and Tamara Witt. 5 L , ,, .. . 1 L to R: Cathy Galloway, Myra Yow, Carol Winters and Cindy Tinker. They had a 2-4 record, which, Coach Doug Green attributes to the fact that they were a young team with only two members hav- ing Varsity experience. As the sea- son progressed, they became stronger and more experienced. They were led by Captain Andy Noble and leading scorer Ron Ridgway. Coach Green also cited Steve Movius, Bob Phillips, Matt Conley and Brian Boudreau for having an outstanding season. Highlights of the season include a seven game winning streak and a champion- ship in the C.O.S. Tournament. The team, lacking in size, still showed a lot of hustle and spirit. This hustle and determination paid off in many of the teams victories. With only one returning player from the previous year a rebuild- ing process was in order, all of the players worked hard and all showed considerable improvement at the season's end. The award winners on this years squad were: M.V.P.- Dave Kavern, Best Offense-Dave Kavern, Best Defense-Marty Med- rano. Most improved-Rick Ed- monds, Most lnsp.-Thad Reece, Leading Scorer-Dave Kavern, Leading Rebounder-Greg Notley, Most Assists-Dave Kavern, Best Percentage F.G.-Rick Edmonds, and Best Percentage F.T.-Joe McDonald. FR-ROPR Porterville frosh soph cubs had an outstanding season. They com- piled an overall 15-4 record, and were 8-2 in the league, finishing in second place. The team was blessed with a lot of speediand quickness, but their main quality was their desire and heart. They never quit. The teams award winners were: Ray Varella, M.V.Pg Richard Ran- kin, Best Offense, Stuart Styles, Best Defense, Robert Gabinette, Most Inspirational: John Shelton, Coaches Award. Coach Hill praised the squad, The frosh soph team was a great example of true Panther pride, spirit, and determination. The JV Team also had a young squad, with the players lacking in game experience which created a slow start. Progress was steadly made, to the end of the season which was highlighted with a win over Monache on the final game. The captains were Don Buford and Dan Hoover. Award winners were MVP-Matt Vickers, super sub.- Tim Barker, Offensive Rebounder- Raul Lopez, Free Throw-Matt Vickers, Best Offense-Matt Vickers, Best Defense-Don Buford, Most Improved-Dan Hoover, and Most Assists-Don Buford. The Frosh Team was formed in the interest of gaining experience and learning good sportmanship. The Frosh Team gained this ex- perience and sportmanship and also showed much spirit and deter- mination through the season. Although they rarely won they al- ways hustled and showed many good prospects for next year's teams. Team captain was Brian Bunyard who was also leading scorer and rebounder. LEAGUE CHAMPS For the third in a row, the Por- terville High Varsity Soccer Team won the league championship. This year's championship was the most challenging and exciting, as the opposing teams were contin- ually seeking to up-end Porterville. Highlights of the season were victories over McLane C2-lb and Clovis C1-OJ both of Fresno, and the consolation trophy at the Hoover Soccer Tournament, our first entry in tournament play. Outstanding players for the season included Ramiro Velarde and Antonio Aldaco, co-MVP's, Randy Weldon best defense Qtwiceb, Cesar Lopez best offense, Rick Rodriguez most inspirational, Tami Laken most improved, and Jeff Wyckoff, coaches award. Fernando and Rosendo Gutierrez, Art Rod- riguez, and Victor Martinez turned in some outstanding perform- ances as did the whole team. This was a particularly satisfying year in winning the championship as the players displayed a higher degree of excellence, attitude and unselfish dedication towards one another in representing our school. lt was a very successful year! As the world turned, so did the breaks for the 75-76 Varsity wrestling team. Plagued all season with injuries and bad breaks, the Panthers stumbled off to a slow start but seasoned as the year progressed. Bill Tinker boasted a 12-2 record along with a 95 lb. championship and most pins trophy at the 1975 College of Sequoia Wres- tling tournment. Bill was later sidelined with a serious knee injury. Dave Sierra, Cesar Jiminez, Roy Swift and many other young men spent 13 grueling weeks of dieting in which over 3000 pounds of body weight were lost. Existing mainly on apples, lettuce and yogurt, the 43 Panther wrestlers survived an exhausting 2 hour a day workout in a room 90 + , in full sweatgear. They showed a form of desire and dedication that only a few athletes endeavor. lne J.V. Wrestling team for 75-76 made up mostly of young and inexperienced wres- tlers. They are enthusiastic and hopeful of doing well this year. They have a lot to ac- complish in order to finish the season with a respectable record. The J.V. Team has a few promising wrestlers. They are experienced only by 1 or 2 previous years but they are doing well this year. I Ruben Rios at 103, Robert Bigham at 145 lbs., Mike McQueen at 191 lbs. and Butch Zimmerman at heavy weight are the ones who have the experience and hopefully they will motivate their team mates. Coach Weir was hopeful for a good season and a good showing at the J.V. Tournament at the end of the season. 75 3,ClULlTLlSJLY'3,f.l ll GUQQSU 'Lg B. Perez, Dr. G uidance. Hillh 'mgvw V R. All cared enough to listen to us in times of turmoil and distress. While we gathered around in campus center, we had time to gossip with our friends. But we would still continue to talk in class. We hassled the teachers, making up excuses for forgetting materials and having too many tardies. We bugged them about giving us extra time to study for the big exam and more times than we have realized they did give us a break. We never stopped to try and understand why they were harsh at times. They were always planning for our tomorrow. They stood behind us and helped us major in the fields we were interested in so our occupation would be one in which we could be rewarded. Step back, take a look at what your teachers have done for you. You know that they are people too, real ones, and people who are always there when you need them. Putting out four- teen copies, a school year is really a task. But with Cathy, an alert, enthusiastic, responsive person and a good staff, put out these issues with no trouble at all and on top of all that, every is- sues was better than best! Cathy put a goal down at the beginning of the year, to be the best in the valley. The way they've been going and the quality of the news- paper, we're sure they'll achieve that goal with no trouble atall. Cathy has been on Orange and Green staff for three years. Andy Noble is multitalented and swims the butterfly, backstroke and free style events, Matt Conley is the defending league champion in the 100 free style and Darrow Soares who specialty is the butter- fly and also swims the individual medley and breaststroke. Coach Greene also mentioned David Benson, Kelly Brown, Bill Goode, Robert Ward, and Chris Josephson as being keys to the teams success. Five of the seven girls are all veterans which include Captain, Anne LaPresta, Co-Cap- tains Kathy Bennett, Renell Land, and Nancy White. They have two good strong freshman swimmers in Lisa Bridges and Sharon Kavern, who should give some excellent performances throughout the year. As of this writing the record is 3-2 in Practice meets and Coach Lynn Enos expects a good season in League Competition. Dana shows excellent form in her dives and is the number one diver on the team. She is also a girls possible league champ. lt looks like a good season for the diving team, which should have a bright future with all the girls returning next year. The boys diving team looks strong this year with a shot at the league championship. Coach Greene was impressed with the depth this year in the diving pro- gram. The divers are coached by Chet Cate who is one of the top in- structors in the valley. The boys diving team is led by Robin Young, who is also the strongest diver on the team. He is only in his second year of diving but he has developed into a good strong diver and with some hard work and dedication he could be league champion. Peter Serna is a new diver to the team but is already the number two seed. He shows some promising talent and progress into an excel- lent diver in the future. Lance Swift is the second varsity diver. JV Divers include Joe Brown, Ken Goode, Ken Poe, and Brian Spann. This is the first year in the new swimming complex and are for- tunate enough to be hosting the EYL League swimming and Diving Championship. -Qwllg Diving L to R: Front: B.Spann, L.Swift, S.Simpson, K.Pole L to R Back Row: R.Young, J.Brown P.Serna, K.Goode. SEASON OUTLOO For the Varsity tennis team it looks like a good season for them, with a record of 3-2 they are look- ing forward to the rest of the sea- son. The veterans of the team are Seniors: Tracy Gill, Jeff Wyck- off, CeCe Goldberg, Jennifer Raf- ferty, and Theresa Buckles. They have some good prospects which include Dan Strong, Kirk Lord, Brad Lawrence, Marta Ramos, Felicia Cousart, and Debbie Goode. All have put in good performances. Coach McCusker predicts a winning season for them with a great fu- ture. Last year the boys won the championship and Coach Mc- Cusker hopes to make this a tra- dition. JV The J.V.'1:Team coached by Cha- rise Shanes consisted of several veterans with many new young players that added excellent depth and strength to the team. Coach Shanes is expecting to do well in league play with consistent and mature play in both singles and doubles. FR-SUPH All the players are endowed with a great attitude and eagerness to play tennis. They are not only an asset to the program now but should be an asset to the program in the next year to keep the Pan- thers Number 1. 3 f ' ' -.fs fwgefg, f- 4- H -- H K , f f ji In Q: jggggsgi?
