As long as there was sufficient Water to avoid water hours, electricity to keep the lights on and the air conditioners run- ning, and steam available for cooking the food, operating the laundry, and propelling the ship, few non-engineers took note of the day to day tasks per- formedby engineering department per- sonnel.
