F ORE WORD In this year's Senior Memoirs the staff has endeavored to present the hopes. inspirations and achievements of the Class of 1946. We have de- picted our school days and the preparation we have received for life. It is the wish of the staff that this annual may serve as a constant reminder to the graduates of 1946 that we have dedicated ourselves to the pro- motion of cooperation, culture and peace. VVe, the class of 1946, have the honor of being the first class graduated from Port jervis High School since the termination of VVorld VVar II. Since most of our class members were under fighting age, we were indeed fortunate in having only a few of our fellows marching off to war. However, we have by no means escaped the dreadful war feeling. VV e saw men in the flower of their youth answer the call of Uncle Sam and subsequently pay the supreme sacrifice. And then there were other boys, not so much older than ourselves, who survived the rigors of war but who have received grevious wounds, both mental and physical, some of these heroes will never again see the outside of hospital walls. And what of those who miraculously returned whole and sound? Are these servicemen complete- ly unchanged? VVe think not, the ordeal of sitting in a foxhole for days and nights on end--of sailing through mined waters--of dodging Zeros, to mention but a few war hazards, must have left some mark. For good reasons these boys occupy a well-deserved place in our hearts. And it is to them and to their future we dedicate our classbook. F urther, we, the class of '46, dedicate our classbook to the fervent hope and prayer that world peace, security and happiness can be obtained without further hostilities. We are now taking leave of our cherished school days and are entering a new life of action and responsibility. lt is our intention and our pledge to use our united power to make the hope and preservation of the hard-won peace a reality. XVC are slowly, hesitantly, walking on the highway the end is near. Soon we will leave the road and begin our journey into a dense mist with its rocky, steep paths, darkened to push us into even deeper depths, if we fall. On the highway, the Class of 1946 prepared for future life. The beckoning mist is Life. Unlike the five previous graduating classes, ' we climb over the fence which borders the highway and proceed into a mist of freedom and peace. A The mere mention of the word caused a little light i to flicker ong now it is growing larger and shining brighter. Look, the mist is clearing and we can see all the American fighting men. Their cocky hats and smiling faces wish us well on our grateful way. Suddenly we all turn towards the highwayg we look and reminisce. We were so well prepared. Is the mist really so dense and dark, or will our preparation for future life clear it? VVe begin to recapture the story of our preparation and of our school days. 'OUR FRIENDS Nliss Vcrnclia Crawford, ,Miss Elizabeth Stoddard, Mrs. Louise H. Blood, Mr, Robert Padgett. This year under the able guidance of our sponsors, the Class of '46 has enjoyed a suc- cessful year. lVithout consideration of their own time and pleasure, Mrs. Blood, Miss Craw- ord, Miss Stoddard and Mr. Padgett have helped us in every possible wav. Never once were they called upon that they did not give their counsel and inspiration. Often they of- fered their help before being asked. VVithout them, we would have been at a decided loss. VVe, the Class of '46, wish to thank our sponsors and friends for their never-ending patience. Truly, they have added to the most pleasant memories of our vears at P.-I.H.S. liach senior who passes through the portals of our Alma Mater in june, will leave with fond recollections of a happy senior year, despite our scholastic difficulties and minor troubles. Yes, We salute you. YVe owe you a debt of undying gratitude. If our future lives are as pleasant as vou have made our last year at school, surelv we shall be more fortunate, .,,,.-,. .M ,-v.-... , ,mF,,,T.L I 1 i zi 4 4 E E 1 PRINCIPAL ERVIN R. FLETCHER PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE Former students and classmates are coming home-home from the battle fronts across the seas, lVith one great strug- gle ended a new and even more complicated one presents itself-the enduring peace of the world-to be won or lost ac- cording to the strength of the wisdom, faith, courage, and magnanimity of its peoples. just as big pleasures and great happiness are but the consummation of many little pleasures and deeds of kindness, so is lasting peace the consummation of the many little acts of friendliness, mutual respect, thoughtful- ness. and true justice toward every one in each community whatever their nationality or creed. This is the challenge, and if every community has well laid foundations in these respects there is hope for enduring world order and peace. As the class of 1946 leaves the portals of Port Jervis High School we would point out once again that the wav we are facing has everything to do with our destination. lt has been the desire of the Board of Education and the faculty to give you the best that the community can afford. XVc have done our best to hcl-p you acquire knowledge and skills which will stand you in good stead among your fellow citizens. And what is more, we hope we have given you opportunities to acquire the attributes for true success-a grateful heart, a thoughtful mind, a kindly word, a helpful hand, a loyal and courageous spirit, and lastly, the ability and willingness to pull your own weight wherever you may be. J., A great many classes have passed. And now it's our turn to leave P. J., Forty-six came entirely too fast. O-h, how we will miss our old schoolmates, No more can we skip or be late. Xes, we surely will miss our old school- mates, Our futures are now up to fate. VVe have complained and griped about P. J., Not a word was meant by one. ' The best in the world is our P. J., A school full of study and fun. John Kent at first your attention commands, For he in the post of president stands. Sparrowbush is his hometown, But NVest End, too, is nice, he found. A handsome fellow from the Acre, One who is a terriiic ineart-breaker, ls Jr. Rotarian and treasurer in one. Mrs. Biondi's fun-loving son. Weigel, Dutch a 312 member, A football player we will remember. Our Vice-President, this year too, WVithout him what would the Big lll do? Bobbie Muller, the cutie with beautiful hair, Always keeps our minutes square. Instead of Frankie, she'll take Bing, And OH, is she crazy over her ring! YVe couldn't get along without this lass, A nuss who's dear to all our class. Margie Ferguson's the one we mean, As social chairman, she was keen. Van Sickle, a bruiser, his first name Dick, VVithout him would the Big III tick? He always seems to have his homework done, And in 5th period English is lots of fun. Nick Pinka-la, one liked by all, Made himself famous with a basketball. And the final member of the Big lll, Nick, remember you shot down our Christmas tree? Agnes Barber is never seen, VVithout a stick of delicious Dentyne. A secretary she will undoubtedly be, And I bet she sits on the boss's knee. Shay Van Etten is saving each penny, So she can marry our boy, Kenny. You may t-hink this is silly stuff, But she can't be with -him quite enough. MARY MULLALX Richard Fahey with his curly hair, ls thought by girls, as pretty lair. He visits Matamoras quite a lot, VVhat appealing cha-rms has it got? Nina Carter, our piano whiz, .iiways passes a musical quiz. A concert she will someday call. 'And give it in Carnegie Hall. Next in her turn comes Rohner, 'Laine For -her corny iokes, she's not to blame. As Editor-in-chier, she worked so hard, But her sunny disposition was not marred A slick-chick senior is Conroy, Pat, And a mighty nice dancer we'il say that Not a better pal can be found, l T-han this gal, who is so an-round. Roland XVieb-oldt, our farmer boy, Always seems to bring us ioy. NVhat a build this young lad has! And in pro-blems class, he takes a razz. A girl who is usually late, liven when she has a date Is Betty Goodtellow, a s-porty gal, A real teen-ager and one swell ipal. Jean Hamilton is always seen.
