Although it was a happy time, celebrating the fact that we finally made it, it was also a sad occasion. It may be the last time we will ever see some of our classmates. We must all go our separate ways, but there will always remain a spot in our hearts for Port Clinton High School. 6 Q I ,Je .A Q46 ,!,,,f. 3 Lfv- Q-:jg '.-i wf' ' LANNY STREETER JILL MEYER -- . . The band started out the season by playing at the football games between halves. After foot- ball season was over, the band practiced for the Christmas concert in which they played many numbers appropriate for the season. When school resumed after Christmas vacation, the band began working towards the spring concert. This hard work didn't go for naught as the concert was certainly a success. The band finished out its year by marching for Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day. The orchestra under the direction of Mr. David Stanton, is getting larger each year. This year there was a total of 37 members. The orchestra played at the Northwestern Ohio Orchestra Festival, at Rotary, Catawba P.T.A., spring concert, baccalaureate, and commencement. The Dance Band under the direction of Mr. Earl Warnke was the best it has been in many years. Besides playing at all the basketball dances, they played for the honor drivers' award meeting, and the school talent assembly. Big plans are in store for the dance band in the coming years. mauchinq ' Q 56 Semen Band membena I 1 -Q x 4, f'xN li. NJ---I-N X 1 I if -, ' M 1 . 1 . . J ' : R A Q ' .' 0 . ' ' II ' ll ' Lanny Streeter Reverend Braun Dale Wllllams Comme The seventy-third annual Commencement of Port Clinton High School was held in the high school auditorium on June 2, at 8:00 p.m. Every class likes to feel that their Commencement is something special, but this year the class of T958 was especially honored. The speaker for the evening was Dr. Arthur S. Flemming, president of Ohio Wesleyan University and the new Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. This was the first time Port Clinton had a member of the President's cabinet for its Com- mencement speaker. ln his speech Dr. Flemming expounded on the admonition credited to Branch Rickey, Never accept the negative until you have thoroughly explored the positive. He pointed out times in which the seniors will be bombarded with negative thinking- in their college life or business, their church, or in the world in general. But in each case he urged them to explore the positive before accepting the negative. In explaining the difference between maturity and immaturity Dr. Flemming cited the example of when the lights went out in the house the four year old child complained of the dark while the older children hunted candles to dispell the darkness. He left the seniors with statement that he felt sure this class was not a group to go out in the world and complain about the darkness, but rather a group that would find candles to light. 82 ment Norman Griffin gave the class address in which he called for reexamination of national policies so to prevent the accelerated weapons race which can only result in war. What kind of world are we heading for? he asked, A world of war, hatred or fear? Or no world at all? Education is the first step in keeping America strong and a diploma is an important part of that first step. I hope we can meet the challenge. Before the diplomas were handed out Mr. Corthell paid special tribute to Vale- dictorian Dale Williams whose 3.9318 average earned im the Gold Key, and Salu- tatorian Lanny Streeter, who received the Silver Key. The seniors liked to think that there were 99 in the graduating class rather than 98, as this was Mr. Sims' last year as Superintendent. In view of this and of Mr. Sims devoted service to the school and the community, Board of Education president Fr. Kenneth Carter stepped down from the customary duty of school board president in presenting the diplomas, relinquishing the honor to Mr. Sims. The musical portion of the program was provided by the woodwind quintet, made up of Jill Meyer, Alice Holly, Judy Voss, Barbara Brokate, and Robert Elyias, playing March Hongroise , and the senior members of Chorale singing One God. After the presentation of the diplomas the seniors sang the Alma Mater together for the last time. Rev. Everett Goings concluded the ceremonies with the benediction. 83 Senior: Dinner: it ,Q-li, mL.
