Basketball With The Chiefs- On Dec. 10, 1948, Coach Art Van Ryzin's Chiefs began their 1948-49 basketball season. Clinching the starting positions on a squad of twelve were Dave Miller and Jack Main as forwards, Esmo Tee Woods and Al Pink- ston at guards, and Ralph Grubb at center. At half year the capable Chiefs had a re- cord of three wins and five loses. At this time Dave Miller, who led the Saginaw Valley scorers in '48, and Gene Bone were graduated from P. H. S. STAR QUINTET ..... To start the '49 season Coach Van Ryzin set up an almost entirely new team. Bud Moore came up to the Varsity from the Re- serves, Pinkston switched to a forward, and Guy Sparrow filled the other forward spot. Grubb still held the pivot job and Woods and Moore played the back court. On March 4, 1949, the Chiefs ended their season in third place at a 6-6 standing. Coach John Petrakis' Little Chiefs fought a scrappy battle all the way to a 5-7 final valley standing. The Papoose Club was much better than the record indicated.
