llllllllllll BOONTON Boonton High supplied the opposition in the 1948 season's inaugural. The Cardinals brought home a victory by defeating the Red and Black 20-13. In the first half it was all Pompton. Boonton rallied after the intermission to tie the score, but the Benson boys once again turned on their offensive guns to score and put the game on ice. DOVER A strong well-balanced Dover eleven invaded Hershfield Park and outclassed the Pomptonians 20-0 in the first home game of the season, The Cardinals put up a gallant fight, but were unable to penetrate the veteran Dover line which time and again outcharged the Pompton forward wall and broke through to spill our ball carriers in their tracks. RAMSEY In a night game played at Ramsey, the Cardinals re- turned to their winning ways and defeated a favored Blue and Gold team 26-18. The Redbirds presented a classy ground attack which helped them build up a commanding lead at half time. Profiit was the big siege gun for the Benson boys, scoring 25 of the 26 points. BOGOTA The Pompton machine turned on the gas to trample the Bogota aggregation 33-13. An intercepted Purple and Gold pass on the first play of the game paved the way for the Cardinals' initial touchdown. The entire forward wall played aggressive ball, and the speedy Red and White backs led by Captain De Remer reeled off long gains. RIDGEWOOD October 23 just wasn't a Cardinal day. Ridgewood put on the pressure and upset the Bensonites 7-0. The Maroon and White capitalized on breaks and pushed over a touch- down in the first quarter. The Pompton offensive failed to click at all in this tilt and the forward wall was out-maneu- vered by an alert Ridgewood line. FAIRLAWN Sports writers' grid calculations were upset as Coach Benson's aggressive eleven defeated Fairlawn 13-O. It was Pompton's day as the fast-charging line kept the Fairlawn speed merchants in check. McCarren played a great game at end, while the blocking of Gallo and Aug paved the way for long runs by Profyrit and De Remer. PASSAIC VALLEY On a muddy field Pompton rolled to its fifth victory at the expense of Passaic Valley. The Benson boys outclassed their foes in every department to win by a count of 20-6. Profiit to the right, to the left, and through the middle told the story as Russ ran wild to score all the Red and White points. BUTLER The Cardinals wrote finis to their 1948 grid campaign by overwhelming Butler 61-6. Scoring three touchdowns, Proffit brought his season's total to a new high in Pompton football history. The entire squad including V. and Freshman-Sophomore players clicked to perfection. De Remer, McCarren, Aug, Evans, Dooley, Profiit, Ottens, Gesbocker, L. Cusick, and Gilmore ended their foobtall careers in smashing splendor. The 1 sty tram tba! beat Butler 61-6. Russ P oil! All State fullbacl, pac!! Pompton's attack at Paxsaic Valley.
