Romaine plunged for the Buc's score, climaxing a 55 yard march in the second quarter for their only score. POMPTON LAKES 0 - BUTLER 7 Pompton Lakes High's hopes of winning another championship and going through the 1942 season undefeated were given a severe setback when they bowed 7 to 0, at Hinchliffe Stadium, Paterson, to their ancient rivals from Butler. Over 7,000 fans saw the game which was one of the most thrilling in the ten years, series. Butler scored on a pass from Earl DeGraw to Collicchio, good for 35 yards. It was Butler's victory late in the third quarter with Collicchio adding the conversion. POMPTON LAKES 13 - RIDGEWOOD 0 Rising like a torpedo from a submarine after the Butler defeat, Pompton Lakes' grid team steam- rolled its arch rival from Bergen County by a 13-0 score. Over 5,000 spectators watched a great Pompton team display devastating blocking and beautiful line plunging by its backs. Gnehm scored Pomp- tonls first touchdown with Dick Sanders coming through with a touchdown after he had been promoted to a starting berth. Lou Mondelli added the extra point to the last touchdown for Pomp- ton's final point. POMPTON LAKES 0 - PASSAIC VALLEY 6 An inspired Passaic Valley team, played off its feet the first half, came back with a powerhouse drive after the intermission, scored one touchdown in the third period and threatened most of the second half to beat Pompton 6-0. Jack Masklee, Valley's fullback, scored his teamls only touch- down on a line plunge from the three yard stripe. Valley was forced to forfeit the game and the State Championship to Pompton Lakes because of the use of an ineligible player. Thus Pompton was awarded the State Championship, its fifth in ten years, with a record of six wins and one loss. Captain Charley Gormley, George Gelman, and Ray Riker were awarded All-State honors by the leading sports writers of the state. Page 43 Last row: Sanders, Ogilyie. Although the X943 basketball team, Captainecl by Ifred Kuehm, started the season impressively and continued to fight hard, they Couldn't quite elieli and finished with five victories and nine losses. The greatest satisfaction was to see Butler beaten twiee, thus break- ing the pins that seemed to haxe hung over the Cardinals the last few years when they split with Butler. ln the first game at Butler's Court, the Ialters broke through in the fourth quarter to ring up nfteen points and win 24-21. The second was a little less breath-taking, as Pompton pushed steadily ahead to trounee Butler 37-17. On January 5, Pompton opened its season against Eastern Academy at home. The team was shaky in the beginning and Wasn,t able to over- eome their opponents lead when they rallied later, losing 42-32. Deter- mined and able, they Came back in the next game to take Ramsey 38-29. The Lakers, still at home, next met Passaic Valley and the game was a thriller, The lead changed hands often. but Pompton was behind with about a minute to go.
