In this year, 1963, although the space age compels us to lift our eyes toward the heavens, we rarely indulge in a mystical but fasci- nating pastime: star-gazing. Few realize the magical properties stars hold for us. Not only do they represent a sympathetic receiver for our dreams and ambitions, but they shine forth into the night, lending a guiding light to us in the world below. If we were to search into this guiding light, we might see displayed before us both the reflection of our many past wishes and the opportunities of the future. By singling out just one star and letting its stardust filter into our hearts when a wish is made, we can come much closer to making our fondest dreams a reality. The Cardinal staff of 1962-63 wishes only one thing of this year; that each and every one of your dreams come true, ttWhen you wish upon a star? m ,, w 5 v21 9'; y m: TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty and Administration................ StudentLife.................................. SocialEvents Clubs and Organizations .. Sports 110 140 Advertisements DEDICATION We of the 1962-63 yearbook staff are proud to dedicate this yearls Cardinal to Mrs. Ada Jeppesen. llJeppji as her stu- dents call her, is a well-known personality of the Pomona High Campus. Her habitat is room 43 where she teaches Latin and English 12. A truly dedicated teacher, she en- courages her students to participate in many extracurricular activities, such as Literature Club seminars and the Great Books discussions. She sponsors the Future Teachers of America and the Latin Club in addition to being a co- sponsor of the Literature Club. She is a past president of the ART. A typical day in her class if Elled with such sounds as llDoes it count, Jepp, does it count?7 lCan we get a precis for it?7l, or the reciting of Shakespearas Macbeth, with some in- spired student quoting in a soft, lilting voice, ilDouble, dou- ble toil and trouble; Fire burn and caldron bubble? If you chance to pass by during a Latin class, even stranger sounds drift out the windows. siHic, haec, hoof! recite her Latin scholars with gay abandon. Jepp combines humor with knowledge to make the process of learning more interesting. To our book of wishes we add your name with pride, Mrs. Jeppesen, hoping that you will continue to bring the light of knowledge to the many future students who will pass through your Classroom. ? 9 V: jxw W, xv w?akx ngu 7W W WW Wx WW W W WW, W A WWVV v; AW WWW ??ANX W m, W ,W X m W? As a group we,ve undergone a change from a number of cliques, in our sophomore year, to a Closely-tied, well knit, and fully capable senior class. In our three years wetve seen other changesgtoo. Wetve chang- ed schools from the familiar campus at Holt and San An- tonio to the new campus at Bangor and Towne. Among our- selves, wehve seen members of our class become fine ath- letes and others become fme scholars. Wehre proud of P0- mona High School and we hope Pomona High School will be proud of us as we go into our final big change, that of entering and contributing fully to the community in which we live. Pomona started off its league season with a great team ef- fort, by defeating La Puente. They then lost a squeaker to league Champion, West Covina but followed with a three game winning streak over Montview entrants: Covina, Baldwin Park and Los Altos. These victories were sparked by All- League seniors Tim Marxmiller and Dennis O,Neill, the Red Devil of the Year. Junior full- back Jim OiCOnnor also contributed much to these Victories. A powerful Ganesha team spoiled Pomonais homecoming festivities with a 27-7 Victory to start a two game losing streak for the Devils. All-League Devils this year were: OiNeill, Marxmiller, Harold Nelson, and Gene Van Dyk. Those receiving honorable mention were: seniors Cliff Dean, Roger Brittain, Bob Miller, Rick Roberts, Don Dickson, Lee McFarland, and Fred Ful- ler, and juniors BiHr Green: OiConnor, and Steve Noll. JACK RAINBOW Coach VARSITY BASKETBALL After losing the complete starting team of 1962, Coach Jack Rainbow was planning on a building year, but was pleasantly surprised when his young Red Devils finished with a fine 18e7 record. Practice tilts included Victories over Bonita, Upland, and undefeated Tri- County League champions Chino, while the only loss squered was to a power- ful Ramona quintet. In tournament play the devils Finished second behind Edgewood by defeating Claremont, Corona and Ganesha, and placed juniors Fred Kern and Doug Westlake on the All-Tournament team. In Chino 20e 30 tournament action, they were eliminated in the second round although Westlake once again received an All-Tournament berth. The first round of league play produced a 6 win e 1 loss record, with the only loss coming from the hands of undefeated Montview League Champion, Covina. Opening Victories over La Puente and West Covina were followed by the Covina setback and a five game winning streak over Baldwin Park, Los Altos, Ganesha, Northview, and La Puente. Our fast-moving cagers were then slowed down by defeats from West Covina and Covina, but they picked up where they left OH and finished the league season with wins over Baldwin Park, Los Altos, Ganesha, and Northview. This brought them into a second place tie with West Covina. Both teams had identical 11e3 league records and a playoff game was set up with the winner advancing to CIF competition. The game was close all the way with the winning basket being scored by Larry Carpenter with less than a minute to play. This gave the Spartans a victory score of 4440. 124 RON KASTNER BOB ATTEBERY RICH MENTLICK DOUG WESTLAKE FRED KERN ROBBIN ADAIR DENNIS MACY BILL HARMSEN 125 Look out Fred!
