Coming in at a dead heat, number fourteen gave its all to the calendar year, and is now ready to go on to the sweepstakes. loclceyed by Kazuo Sei, attended by Paul Schott, and with her un- believable records and earnings recorded by Barbara Toler and Bill Porter respectively, she outdistanced her field by several lengths. At the quarter, pacing the field, the crowd was wild with glee as pale-faced women and bewildered men with their clothes backward and wrong side out, distinguished themselves as newcomers to the races. But their hardships were soon rewarded by a dance sponsored by those horrid initiaters. By the half and threequarters, a steakbake and a Christmas dance had become highlights: and by the finish, social events of the entire year had become very successful, with Marguerite Walker having the stirrups and whip well under hand. Ably jockeyed by George Edgerton and assisted by Paul Keckley, she gave the crowd a show for their money by continually staying ahead of her field. This was not done however without the help of our groom, Dean Ross, and record keepers, Lois Emery and Dot Adams. With several sensational records to her credit in the form of a steakbake and a beach ditch day and many other activities, she more than outdid herself to keep spirit present throughout the year. Having gone through many years of learning how to become in condition for the greater races ahead, number twelve finds that the end of her major training period is coming to a close, and that she will now be able to go ahead into the future and achieve those successes that she so honestly deserves. Getting ready to give her fine qualities in the form of student leadership and achievement to the world, we are confident that her past successes indi- cate that in the years to come we will hear much of her contributions to the track of life. Good luck, number twelve. May the spirit of Pomona High School and Iunior College forever be with you. yy df I' rj!! Riding hard and trying harder is lim Else, assisted by Hideo Sei, with the grooming and feeding in tho hands of Sue Matthews and Iames Dickerson. Known to the odds men as shurshot, number eleven spent a very sensational year highlighted by several unexpected wins. One win, in the form of a dance for the student body, answered the nation's emergency today, by giving all the proceeds to the American Red Cross. During races, spurts in the form of skates and parties gave the crowd much entertain- ment that they enjoyed. According to the tradition of yearlings, the Iunior-Senior reception was ably sponsored by the Iunior class. This presented a fitting climax to a successful year, as all persons attending felt sure that this was the most entertaining and best managed dance of the year. Going on to the future with much experience under the saddle, number eleven promises to all the spectators to become a Winner wherever she might be. Throughout the school year, there are many boys in the school that stand out in qualities of leadership among the students. The Ataman Club of the High School and lunior College is made up of the boys of the institution who have these qualities. Doing much throughout the year to help it to be a more successful one, campaigns to make more use of the underpass, and fixing rules for the initiation of the iuniors, are several of the many contributions of the Ataman Club this year. lt is the feeling among the students that this club is a good step to- wards developing good qualities in the young boys of our community. A club like our Ata- mans, we feel sure, is destined to become among those which have made Pomona known to those outside of our community. We are all looking towards the day when these leaders will be leading our great nation. FCOTBALL With Keckley, Karns, Else, and Maloney all doing our brushing up, and with that ever faithful Frampton-Bruce-Bynum combination at the mid-section, flanked by Ross and Kraft, and many times Dickerson, and with Evans and Payne doing their job like true first stringers, our team forged through to many more new victories. Starting out well by overtaking Anaheim, and then setting out with fresh meat in their eye, our Red Devils in succession overtook Santa Ana, Riverside, Redlands, San Bernardino, and finally Chaf- fey, and again ended up holders of the Citrus Belt League Championship. One of the high- lights of the season was the unexpected rout of a supposedly far superior South Pasadena team, and it did much to build up our morale for the coming games. We owe a great deal to our coach, Archie Nisbet, and his assistant, Stan Acres, and with them at the end of the rope, another successful season is in view. 1 s 1 I ,J J ,.f f 1 'f 4 ff!! As is customary for the winner of the Citrus Belt League Championship, our Pomona Red Devils traveled to foreign shores to compete in the semi-finals against Santa Monica for the Southern California Championship. Confronted by what seemed to be a faster backfield, our hard fighting boys fell to the axe, and were forced to drop from the race. We still have that cup in sight, and we're still fighting for it. Maybe next year, we can say that Southern California Championship is ours. JR. '+L lt looked as if Pomona High Schools baseball team would have the same poor seasons that track, tennis, and basketball had experienced. Stan Acres had but one letterman, Paul Ryan, and was going to have to look towards new material for the rest of his help. Undaunted, Mr. Acres headed for Fremont, where he found another one of the pitching Encinas family, this one named Tommy. lesse Trujillo, all 20-30 tournament centerfielder, also came from Fremont. Again we found Paul Keckley contributing his part to another sport, this time in the position of short-stop, and doing a good job of it too. That, with some very good juniors, made a well balanced team. lt was so well balanced in fact, that it won the consolation prize in the 20-SU tournament classic, and was still among the highest in the CBL league as the season closed. Entering the 20-30 tournament With a bad start with Monrovia, 5 to l, Pomona got back on her feet with three wins with Citrus, 12 to 4, Inglewood, 2 to l, and Point Loma, 3 to 0. Then in the finals Pomona beat Montebello, 7 to 6, to win the consolation prize. Winning all of her preparatory CBL practice games, the Pomona team again started oft with a bad start by losing to Riverside, 9 to lg then to San Bernardino, 3 to 7. With this in mind she beat Redlands, ll to 8, then by successive wins and losses, she ended somewhere near the top of the teams in the Citrus Belt group. Much credit must be given to our fine baseball coach, Mr. Stan Acres. f i f' E Z Q it i-,5.Z.:' 4 , Wg : Vit y .. t Shirley Smith Pomona participants in the 20-30 invitational tournament. 20-30 INVITATION!-XL TOURNAMENT 91 H. I've thought and thought of the appropriate words to place here on the last pages of what represents an entire school year of extra hours, many changes, and much wailing and moaning. Somehow, literary phrases seem inadequate to ex- press my thanks for the continual assistance given by Mrs. Louise Smith, literary advisor, and Adolph Kath, art and layout supervisor. Really, they are the ones who kept this book together and pushed it into the final shape- up. Glenn Feist, Roy Brandt, Lois Wilson, and Tom Coalson, have all been tops in completing their various jobs. Mrs. Bertha H. Hardy, Mrs. Ora Hammond, and Mrs. Iean Morris were especially helpful and generous with their time in gathering material for the Servicemen's section. ' The senior and jaysee graduates would be gnashing their teeth in anger but for the excellent scheduling and arrangement of that section by Dorothy Martin. To the remainder of the staff I express my sincerest gratitude for their assistance. DOBOTHEA KIRKPATRICK Editor ' JIJ5 - Q,-.ujVkii7'f1tVy.AK for K X09 Q LL,fUf-ff 'fn' , -- M Nw. AK ADVERTISERS . .
