F O O T B A L L Coaches Johnny Kitchen and Rube Leissner were well pleased with the spirit and energy of the inexperienced football players of 1945. Eight losses and two wins were as well as could be expected with so few returning lettermen. Returning letter men were Joe Holt and J. L. Kee. The only returning squadman was Bob Ball. The starting line-up for most of the games was: center, Johnny Bradford, guards, Bill Burkhart, Ernest Steadman, tackles, Bob Ball, Donald Crowg ends, J. L. Kee, Bobby Grimes, backs, Joe Holt, Ed Peacock, Dub Kelly, Ben Tompkins. Other squadmen were: Luther Scarborough, Bill Elliott, Tommy Taylor, Jerry Nabors, Lewis Connell, Bryan Bennett, David Powell, Joe Bob McGilvray, Jim Grace, Gene Youngblood, Monk Owens, and Bobby Troutt. The following twenty-one men lettered: Bob Ball Bryan Bennett, Johnny Bradford, Bill Burkhart, Don Crow, Lewis Connell, Billy Joe Elliott, Dubbie Graves, Bobby Grimes, Joe Holt, Dub Kelly, J. L. Kee, Gordon Moore, Jerry Nabors, Ed Peacock, David Powell, Ernest Steadman, Luther Scarborough, Tom my Taylor, Ben Thompkins, Gene Youngblood and Lloyd Harper, Manager. The only ones of these lettermen who will be lost by graduation are Donald Crow, J. L. Kee, Gordon Moore, Ernest Steadman, and Gene Youngblood. The Highlight of the '45 season was the game at Galveston. On this trip the squad was accompanied by the cheer leaders M . . Wmlifwwa . . uigjf, ,gi .mafia as ft iw s- Q Page 51 'WMA' gl. BASKETBALL The Parrot Cagers, made up entirely of inexperienced men, rounded out a very successful season of basketball, winning five out of ten district games to place third in the district. Two members of the team made the All-District squad: Bill Elliot making the first team and Tommy Taylor, the second. The entire squad will be back next year and should be one of the best teams in the district.
