His most arduous years of service were spent as a Prisoner of War, from January, 1942 to February, 1945 in the Hands of the Japanese, shortly after they overran the Philippines in the early days of World War II. All of us who have known him, during his short stay aboard the POCONO, take this op- portunity to express our heartfelt appreciation for services rendered, and to wish him the best of continuing success and prosperity. 1 4 1 1 1 1 1 CDR. WILLIAM R. GIBSON, USNi EXECUTIVE OFFICER The former Purdue Electrical Engineer spent 11 years in Sub- marines after being commissioned through V-7 in 1941. He was a-I warded the SilverStar for his part in the sinking of five enemy ships , in action offBorneo. As Skipper y of the Sea Poacher in 1951, his ship received acclaim for its dramatic rescue of a Navy Bllnipi off Key West, Florida. Command-1 er Gibson served with OpDevForu prior to his assignment aboard the POCONO.

Cavenagh served as command er of the Amphibious Task Force during opera- tion DEEPWATER, largest amphibious assault in the Mediterranean since World War II. EMBARKED FLAGQ 3 i W 55,2 X I ls ,ff 5 f HL . ,iss it Z 1? served as Commanding General of the Fourth Provisional Marine Air-Ground Task Force, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic. The much- decorated combat aviator assumed his present duties as Chief ofStafffor Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic on June 10, 1957. LTCOL E. M., STIMSON assumed command of the NELM Marine Detachment assigned to the Amphibious Squadron serving with the SIXTH FLEET in early October 1957. As such, he was in command of the troops who would have been used should the need have arisen for an amphibious landing of any type. Commander Transport Amphibious Squadron Eight, Captain B. E. Lewellen. Formerly Operations Officer for MSTS with duty in Washington. The Commodore relieved ComPhibGroup II Kas commander, NELM Amphibious Detachment, after completion of Operation Deep-Water.
