Language Arts demands the use of many skills. Eighth graders read novelsg studied dramag and completed a project for the Mark Twain Unit. Seventh graders wrote speeches, read short stories . and kept writing journals. All students were required to review and strengthen spelling ' skills, punctuation and capilatization skills and paragraph writing skills. Special projects such as book reports and reviews, and foreign pen pals were offered to help promote writing skills. 3 um X X X Q . ,.,- X 4' . The reading program at Pleasant Lea Junior High functions as an extension of the language arts program. Our major concerns is the reading skills. The reading skills emphasized are compre- hension, word-attack skills, and structural analy- sis. Development of writing skills is also provided through paragraph writing, book reports, and short answer quizzes. Spelling worksheets are de- veloped using words taken from various reading materials used in the class, and weekly spelling tests are given. Study skills are taught and em- phasis is placed on utilizing these skills in the content areas. Group instruction is utilized with special em- phasis placed on individual weaknesses. Students participate in both oral and silent reading fol- lowed by discussions and comprehension quizzes. Specific skills are presented by the teacher, and practice in these areas is provided through oral and written exercises. Extra practice is given to those students who have not mastered these skills.
