(£ool 54 Dear Boss, I give up; I've had it! I'm thoroughly melted, positively perched , and besides that, I quit! I am a disgrace to the Federation of Elves, Brownies and Fairies, and I'm turning in my brownie pin. As you will recall I was tapped to tease, tantalize and torment the Class of '54 through- out high school. When they were freshmen my job was definitely on the cool” side, except when they elected four real gone guys as officers; and when they defeated the sophomore and senior boys to become basketball champs of the school. I might have suspected something then, but they were such a crazy mixed-up bunch of kids (real squares ) that I never noticed. How was I to know what I was in for? The symptoms became 5-alarm in their sophomore year when, despite my efforts, they jazzed through a highly successful year under the guidance of their strictly hep offi- cers. Already the brains and brawn of this Class were coming to the attention of the cagey upperclassmen as the mere sophomores began to beat their time in scholarship and sports. And, in shame, I must admit their Sophomore Hop was quite a ball—a solid session! When the CLASS of '54 finished its junior year, I was going ape! I was a frustrated wreck! The situation was simply out of my control (in other words, gone) ! The CLASS really rated! They gave the other students and even the faculty a large charge.” Junior representation boosted the football team, and the junior guys blasted” to the top in basketball and baseball. Several guys and dolls of the class attended All-State Chorus and Band in Buffalo. A hardworking group of kids under the leadership of Shirley Stone and Mike Beauvais put on the best Prom in years! Man, it was really the most! To top it all off, Mike was crowned King with popular Nancy Anderson as his Queen. The positive peak was reached when the juniors swept to victory over the seniors on Class Day. I still get head- aches when I think of that year. It was strictly for the birds! The crow’ning disaster for me came during their senior year. I just don’t dig such a complete failure! That year the CLASS of '54 rose to even greater heights. They topped all previous magazine campaign sales and they (dig this!) even had their class ring money in on time. I thought I was on the beam again when Miss Foss told Mr. Benton during one of their recent bop” sessions that her English IV class was real gone”?! Above the sounds of the blast” Mr. Benton was heard to reply that his chemistry class was gone” too—in fact, it was strictly from outer space! It sounded promising, but I still can’t figure out if their bop talk” was for real” or if they were just faking off!” By the way, the football team again became champs with the help of seniors Fred Hor- vath, Dick Merritt, Mike Beauvais, Bill Freeborne and others. I won't even mention the success of the Class Play and the Senior Reception. Well, Boss, I just wanted to clue you in” that the CLASS of '54 is entering adult life well-prepared and capable. I certainly must have goofed! Yours in resignation, ELF NO. 3 P.S. I'm glad I won’t be around to feel the breeze” when you’ve read this!
