the Senior Class of PLATTSBURGH HIGH SCHOOL Plattsburgh, New York presents the We Are H o n o red OUR ALMA MATER We, the class of 1953, take a great pleasure in presenting this, the thirty-third edition of the Barker to the faculty, students and friends of Platts- burgh High School. We wish to express our deepest thanks to all those who have helped us in presenting this yearbook: to Mr. Wood, our class adviser, for his capable guidance in financing the yearbook and for the enthusiasm he has instilled in us; to Mr. Newlove for his untiring counsel in the art work; to Miss Foss for her advice in the Literary Department; to Miss Quinlan for her aid to the typing staff; to Mr. Bates for his excellent photography; to the patrons for their financial aid and to all others who have helped to make this book possible. [2] DEDICATION We, the class of '53, wish to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. McAllister. Besides being a Social Studies and English teacher, he is the adviser for the Jun- ior-Senior Boys' Honor Society, the Junto Club, and of the Movie Club. He has a friendliness which the class of '53 has realized and has benefi- ted from throughout our four years. We shall be happy to count him among our friends in the years to come. Hi There! [31] f Class Hi'sto Get your popcorn here, step right up for delicious popcorn and soda pop.” The barker's cri ring in festive tones, the calliope renders Cheer, cheer for old Plattsburg High” and the she is on. The crowd settles expectantly inside the huge circus tent and then the master of cere- monies steps up: Ladeez and gentlemen, good afternoon and welcome to the showing of the Greatest Class on Earth. Here before your very eyes you will see the members of the class of 1953 perform mental and physical death-defying and record-breaking feats. May I direct your attention to the first ring where you will see the Freshman and Sophomores years pass in review. The Freshman of 1949 showed wisdom and promises as they selected a fine slate of officers to head the parade: Jim Brown, President, Elaine Scheier, Vice-President, Paul Earl, Secretary, and Phil Bourdeau, Treasurer. The year was filled with getting acquainted” as the future orators, athletes, and others began to get into the act.” Here comes 1950 and Sophomore year. Highlights of the year included athletic events in which many of the 1953 students were playing J. V. and Varsity football, basketball, and baseball; that was the year of 18 straight wins in basketball; the ladies of the class were now becoming cheerleaders, chorus members and Friendships. The social life was highlighted by the Sophomore Hop. Now will you kindly look at the second ring where we see, in all its new upper classman-like splendor, the Junior class. The four people in front are the officers of the year: President Elinor Santor aided in her work by Vice-president Eugene Sharrow, Secretary Elaine Scheier and Treas- urer Dale Tucker. By this time the class had quite a list of celebrities including James Kenyon who gained fame by becoming a member of the All State High School Band at Rochester, New York and Marjorie Deuell entered the annual American Legion Oratorical Contest and placed fourth in the zone contest held at Albany. The Athletic Council and various other organizations swelled to overflowing with these new Juniors full of zest and life to do a year's work. The Junior Prom held in April was an outstanding event of the school year. That little lady with the crown perched on her head is Elaine Scheier and the dashing fellow at her side is Eugene Sharrow. They were crowned Queen and King of the Prom by Mr. Merritt. Junior-Senior Class Day finished off an eventful year. The Juniors put up a brave fight but bowed in defeat to the Seniors of 1952. The lights are dimmed and the master of ceremonies signals for a spotlight for the center ring. Now, it is with great pleasure that I present the finished product of four years of studies, sports, speeches, contests, music, laughter, tears, and friendships. For what would the circus be without a star, a main attraction? Ladeez and gentlemen, the star of our show. The Senior Class of 1953. Here are Eugene Sharrow who has done an outstanding job as this years President, Janet Fox, Vice-president, Janeann Hart, Secretary, and Dale Tucker, Treasurer. The other members of the class went on to greater heights in winning honors. James Kenyon continued his musical accomplishments by making All State Orchestra in Buffalo. Marie Baker and Paul Earl were also chosen for members of the chorus, and Lynne Potter won the D. A. R. award. The Senior Re- ception was its usual success and perhaps more so because it was sponsored by the Class of 1953.” Now Ladeez and gentlemen you have seen our 3 ring circus. We hope you have enjoyed the performance. May I direct your attention to the parade of the performers as they file out of the tent in glorious review. They are leaving the show, hanging up costumes and taking off , the make-up to face a future. Armed with knowledge and experience gained in the hallowed halls of PHS, they will succeed. There's no business like show business. You've just witnessed the colorful show put on by the talented members of the greatest class on Earth, the Class of 1953.' Lack of experience at some of the positions that were very important in winning games in 1951, cost the Hornets ball games in 1952. Injuries hampered the team all through the season. Hornet Coach had only five returning veterans out of his 1951 co-champion- ship team. League standing for the Hornets in the Essex County League had the PHS team in second place and in position for a crack at League play-offs, and the Class A Section 7 Championship, when this article was printed. Injuries and sickness also plagued the team throughout the entire season, as key men had to be replaced with inexperienced men. With only three veterans returning to the Hornet nine. Coach Charlie Clifford faced the task of building a winning team out of inexperienced men at four of the infield posts, and the pitching mound. The Hornets defeated M.A.I. twice and St. John’s once, for their three victories. Although they had a weak pitching staff, the Hornet men were only shut out once. The inexperienced team proved that it would be tough to beat in 1953. BASEBALL TEAM [54] Front Row, left to right: Pliny Ayers.
