1F IF ME The Trojan Image Platteview Jr - Sr High Springfield, Nebraska 2 Contents Introduction 4 Faculty 13 Students 33 Sports 53 Organizations 77 Activities 99 Advertisers 115 Index 127 This book holds the memories of a game I played. Sometimes I won and sometimes I lost. The name of the game was “Going to Platteview. ’’ 6 7 I always felt that I spent too much time behind a desk, with a book, and as assign- ment. Still, I found time to do those crazy things that made school fun. 10 1 Faculty Administration The task of keeping the school running efficiently is the responsibili- ty of the administration. They have to keep rules and regulations enforced which are set up by the state and the school board. This plays an impor- tant role in the educational system. If a breakdown of the guidelines were to occur, it would cause a breakdown of the whole orderly educational process. The most important thing that man has in his lifetime is his education. It directs his whole course of life. Man has nothing without an education. One of the main tasks of the administration is to guarantee a balanced education for everyone. Above: Mr. Luttman - Superintendent Below: Mr. Dambrosia - Principal 14 Guidance Mr. Gerdes is always willing to help anyone with a question. His door is always open to any student who wants some help with personal problems or school problems. He also helps many seniors who want some information on different schools that they might be in- terested in attending after high school. Clerical Mrs. Nielsen and Mrs. Gosch have the respon- sibility of collecting lunch money, taking attendence and all the other clerical duties that are required to keep the school operating. So if you have any questions about what is happening around the school, just walk into the office and ask one of these women. They keep their hand on the pulse of the system. 15 Staff Art Benson, Fred Riley. Dean Schrum our janitors, work their hardest to keep Plattcview in the best shape possible. By a quick walk around the halls you can see that they succeed. Mrs. Mowinkel. Mrs. Pcrsingcr. Mrs. Caloway, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Erhart. Mrs. Timmcrmann our cooks, arc continually working hard to prepare good hot meals for over 400 students every day. Our food is the envy of all the schools in the area. 16 Special Duties Jackie Schrum. our school nurse does her best to keep our school healthy. Her job is taking care of the sick kids in their time of need and administering several tests. Miss Butleli works out of ESU 3 and attends Platteview on a part time basis helping students with speech impediments. Each student working with her can sec their improvement. This year we have a new assistant. Mrs. Broshears. who helps around the office and also helps manage several study halls. Her help was appreciated by both students and teachers. 17 Lois Reischick - Art. Ceramics Crafts Sylvia Bentley - Home Ec. I 2. Family Liv ing. Clothing Construction. Hayes seem to be having a gascr of a time in Mr. Icenogglcs lab 22 Is Shorthand hard? Mr. Ahl’s first year class evidently thinks not. They never did learn how to talk him out of class. 23 Mrs. Luttman seems to have her 7th grade class busy today with another test. Below: Bob Nielsen and Bob Siewert are resting their lips as “the band plays on! Biology creates many different reactions. Pictured above, Kim McGuire seems integreged. Mark Rose passive and Jeanne Siewert amused. Pictured at right: Mentally Mr. Trox- el's seventh grade class keeps busy. 24 “Recite the Gettysburg Address! But I’m Jeff Salberg not Abraham Lincoln.” Mr. Buza's American History class takes on many challenges. Below: Linda Sedlacck. Merilee Gates and Kim Carpenter enjoy Mrs. Brown’s Shakespeare course as Greg Scholling enjoys having his pic- ture taken. Below: Pam Brandenburg. Connie Laschansky and Bernard Sedlacck continue working on their art projects. Who wouldn t with the teacher in the back of the room? 25 Mr. Storms. Ruth Whitney and Carol Eckholt discuss the school paper, that they work hard at to provide the student body with the latest news. Below: Mrs. Hahn always keeps her P.E. classes on the ball! Or is that under the ball? By Below: Mr. Gosch's 7th grade block class looks the ball? With... like fun, and they are. 26 Oh no! A surprise lest!! I wonder if the nurse is in! Mike Wilson dreams. Below: Mr. Eickhoffs class seems lo be resling their fingers for a while. Not for long. Drill, drill, drill! 27 Mr. Slaberg’s geography class shows that he always adds that certain something which makes lear- ning fun. “You really think we understand that don’t you?” smiles LaVonne Latham and Allen French in Mr. lcenoggles one and only Physics Class. Jane Amerine, Sharon Broshears, Liegh Erhart and Diane Landbcrg really get involved with their clay projects in art. The joy of individual achcivcmcnl is reflected on Linda Dennis’s face in the science lab. In Biology Class, Jcanie Schrum, Sherraline Tuttle and Bev. Schleip dissect clams and giggle of how they resembled lunch. In the upper left picture Mr. Ahl explains: Today's lecture “What to do when your boss chases you. Point number one - Don’t run. At the upper right Platteview's Varsity Band gets better every day with practice and Mr. Leigh's guiding hands. Center left: In Mrs. Luttman’s math class the students wrap up another assignment and that's a great achievement. At center right these 7th graders show true school enthusiasm in Mr. Gosch's room. Lower left: Evidently some handsome teacher is keeping these 7th graders’ atten- tion. I wonder if Mr. Sharpe knows something about it. At the lower right Mr. Boe keeps the atten- tion of his math students to the front of the room, while Don Stoltenberg keeps his to the rear. 31 Mr. Landberg and his music students get together every 5th hour before lunch to sing a few songs. Those passing in the hall are treated to pleasant sounds. Mr. Sayer keeps his students busy. Robert Dixon. Randy Peoples. Robert Smith and Norm Rhoten diligently work on their shop projects which are useful around the home. They accept new ideas and opinions from the students, and have lessened the gap between students, teachers, and administration. They cannot please everyone, but set out to please the majority and succeed. A big accomplishment of the year was the placing of benches and center planter in the courtyard with a flag pole in the middle. Back row: Rick Broshears (vice presidcm), Bill Startzer (president). German Club is “A social group whose purpose is to create comaraderie amongst the speakers of German.” It was a short year for the German Club. As a result of so many other activities the German Club was limited to only one event, their annual picnic at the end of the year. They journeyed to Mandon Park, only to be discouraged by hail and rain. But they had a most enjoyable time before the day was ruined. Standing Carol Eckholt (Vice Pres.). Judy Hibberd (Treasurer). John Hibbcrd. Laura Lichncr. and Mike Jones. Glee The glee, this year put in many hours of long hard practices that seemed to be quite profitable at the close of the year. A bake sale was held this year to help pay for the unsold record albums recorded by the glee department. The Annual Music Clinic was held at Ashland which proved to be quite enjoyable for most of the students. Along with the regular Christ- mas and Spring Concerts, the glee spent a day from school joined by the band to put on concerts at the Elmwood and Waterloo High School. So the 1972-73 school year will be a memorable one for those in glee. Band Again this year in the fall the band practiced each morning to prepare for the annual Pershing Marching Festival. Rain or shine they could be heard for miles around. Besides marching and performing at half-time football games, and hav- ing a Pep Band at basketball games; the kids and their Director Mr. Leigh worked to prepare for parades, concerts and contest. In the spring the band and glee took a day off to give a concert at Elmwood and Waterloo. The hard work and dedication proved worthwhile as the year ended with many happy moments and enough memories to last a life time. Each year at the band’s annual Spring Concert Mr. Leigh awards an Outstanding Bandsmen award to a Senior boy and girl who he feels has had musical ability, determina- tion and loyalty throughout their years of service. Above, Bob Nielsen was chosen to receive the boy’s Outstanding Bandsmen award. Pictured at the right, the girl’s Outstanding Bandsmen award went to Dawn Maystrick.
