The team of 1984-85 marked the beginning of a new generation of Plateau Valley knowledge bowlers. Every member of the team, except for three-year veteran Ian McEwen. was a fresh recruit — in- experienced. but full of enthusiastic energy. Their lack of ex- perience didn't hinder the young new members in the slightest, however. One of the team's proudest moments was scoring among the top three of over one dozen teams and competing in the public exhibition round at Rifle High School. But perhaps the most vivid memories will be of the little things — like munching cookies and coffee before the Palisade knowledge bowl, getting sick at the Taco John's in Parachute, or watching Byron Bradford empty his ‘Doctor Who” paraphernalia from his trenchcoat pockets. Knowledge bowl was not only fun. challenging, and exciting, but it also made you glad that you had the chance go to school and get an education. arching Band AN UNUSUAL SEASON... Drum Majors Determination . . . Dedication . . . Leadership ... Humor.. . These are a few of the qualities that senior Todd Lachniet demonstrated as head drum major throughout the marching season. On oc- casion Todd played solos on his tenor sax, relinquishing control of the band to sophomore Kelly Cox, a bright-eyed flute player with a friendly smile. Sweetheart An old tradition, the concert band an- nually selects one female musician as the band’s sweetheart. Intelligent, friendly, and good-looking. Kim Fullmer is the ob- vious choice. Not only is Kim well-liked by the band, but she is also an outstanding clarinetist showing tremendous potential talent for her two remaining years. Twirlers Karen Encke Dianna Leinberger Dalyn Thompson A band without a director is like a car without a driver. What would Plateau Valley’s bands be like without Martin En- cke? Since 1979 he has been planning, guiding, singing, and joking with his various bands. Few teachers have been as dedicated and devoted to their classes as Mr. Encke has been to his bands for the past six years. Humorous, stubborn, car- ing, and sometimes downright nasty, there may not be another band director across the land quite like Mr. Encke. a very unique and special part of our school, Martin Encke is the man who has made our band what it is today. Plateau Valley has never had a mar- ching season quite like it had during the fall of 1984. It was Todd Lachniet who made the '84 season so unique. The marching band’s drum major had a special knack for keeping the band’s attention, lessening its nervousness, and boosting its confidence. Few of the band members of ’84 will forget about singing “Row. Row. Row Your Boat during the homecoming half-time routine when the show was delayed by a malfunctioning loud speaker, or mak- ing the 'blip-plop’’ sounds of rain- drops before entering Delta’s football field for the annual marching contest. Plateau Valley’s 1984 contest show also had a new twist. Instead fo presen- ting their typical “march on — play a song — march off’’ routine, they add- ed interest and variety to their show and nearly tripled their previous year’s score. They created interest by danc- ing to a dixieland piece played by five of their musicians, threw in a little jazz for variety, and topped off the act with music featuring a trumpet — trom- bone duet. Plateau Valley sent eight of its most talented musicians to participate in the annual Western-Slope Honor Band held at Central High School in Grand Junc- tion. Both the Jr. High and High School honor bands were comprised of the most musical students from across western Colorado. The members from Plateau Valley were (in front) Joel Dulaigh, Shawn Walter, and Mark Phipps. Behind the first three are Trudy Hall, Lesli Hill, Shaun Anderson, Joni Reese, and Ian McEwen. Weeks and months of tedious rehearsals . . . Day after day these young bands prepare for those few minutes of public performance that come with the two or three con- certs they play each school year. Yet. for all their hard work and deter- mination. these band often receive little credit for their efforts. Remember the names and faces of these people as you glance at their pictures, for some of the young band members of today will be the band leaders of tomorrow. 8 P.O. The Talent But Not the Touch Although the girls did not get to attend the State Tournament for the 1984 Volleyball season, the season that has past will hold many memories for the graduating Seniors and their teammates left behind. The girls had many triumphs, the big win over Rangley for the League Title during Homecomig week will be the most remebered victory in their minds. Districts brought a disappointing and sad ending to the 1984 season. The girls came out strong, winning their first match at the District Playoffs against the Sorocco Rams. The girls went on to lose to Rangley, who defeated them in the semi-final game; it seemed they had the talent but not the touch. Blake was a hard nosed tackier and didn’t back down from anyone. When Jeff put his mind in the game, he was tough to block and a good tackier. 54 Steve was a great team leader and really helped to keep the team together Pound for pound. Wes was one of the toughest players that could really play with pain Kevin was the strongest player on our team in 84 He played a good defensive end position. Jerry came through in the end and became a starter. 55 One of our better Seniors, Jim showed leadership in the game and on the practice field by always giving one hundred percent. Although dif- ferent styles of basketball and inex- perience kept him from a starting role, he was a vital part of our team. He always came off the bench and did an excellent job, whether we were ahead or behind. His cheery disposition, unique sense of humor, and unselfish attitude were in- valuable in molding us into a team. We are all thankful to have had the privilege of sharing a season and really getting to know such a fine person as Mamadee Dorbor.” Coach Rau Steve Fullmer: “Steve was our on- ly returning letterman to finish the season. He completed his high school career shooting 42% from the floor, was one of our leading re- bounders, and was undoubtedly one of our best defensive players. In ad- dition, Steve exhibited a lot of leadership to our young team by ex- ample. He was punctual, hardwork- ing, and dedicated day in and day out. Plateau Valley will certainly miss Steve Fullmer next year when they don the Green and White and take to the Hardwood.” Coach Rau PALISADE CLEANERS PALISADE, COLORADO 81526 464-5942 62 PV Opponent 70.............55 Nucla 48 ..........42 Grand Valley 39 ......... 75 Delta 58 ............67 Grand Jet.
