In case you did not know some of them have come back to haunt the classrooms of P.H.S. as teachers. Those teachers that were once in the same state of mind that students are in their classes are Mrs. Virginia Butler, Mrs. Nancy Baucum, Mrs. Cindy Young, Mrs. Regina Clark, Mrs. Paula Williams, Mrs. Sue Kidwell, Mrs. Lisa Kersh, Miss Cynthia Gregory, Mrs. Judy Buchanan, Mr. Greg Patridge and Sharon Harder. Yes, even your vice principal, Larry McBee is a graduate of PHS. Another member of the English department, Sue Kidwell, graduated in 1943. As a student here, Mrs. Kidwell participated in band. To further along her career after graduation, Mrs. Kidwell attended college at Texas Virigina Butler graduated from P.H.S. in 1956. She then went to attend Howard Payne University, where she majored in speech. As a member of the English department, P.H.S. is the only place she has taught since her graduation. When asked ws it hard to come back to the school, Mrs. Butler replied, ‘ No I felt like I was coming home.” Mrs. Butler is married has has three children. Paula Williams graduated from PHS in 1957. Mrs. Williams commented that Mr. Ryan was the only teacher from that time, that is still here. He was her junior high band teacher and was occasionally assisting the high school band director. After Mrs. Williams graduated, she continued her education at Texas Tech University. Her major ws in English. I am youthful. My hands are strong and calloused. My shoulders are broad and firm and able to handle heavy loads. My feet are firmly planted in the soil from whence my strength comes. But my heart is burdened and sad from my father’s generation’s legacy. Apathy. Deterioration. Inflation. Unemployment. Taxes. A society that doesn’t or can’t work. A populace that is indifferent. Leaders that don’t lead. Why? I am an American. I love my country. The Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, Old Glory, The Star Spangled Banner, and the bald eagle are not just symbols of any nation, but of my nation. They are my life blood, my soul, my inspiration. They are more of me than I can ever know or ever admit. The Statue of Liberty is more than a statue. It is the guarantee that freedom and liberty do still exist in a cold and bleak world. And freedom are more than mere words. They are alive and a testimony that any man can reach his potential. I am an American. I love my country from sea to shining sea, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. I love her institutions and sym- bols. I believe that she is the greatest nation. I am an American. I am the last of a dying breed. Are you an American? I am an American. But I need to know. Please answer me. Am I alone? by Donavon Luhning 1981-82 OEA National Secondary Treasurer 6 vlw 'i AW it 11 12 ■■ 17 18 19 The last one-third of this century belongs in large measure to you young people, It is yours to claim, yours to impoverish, yours to perfect. The quality and I dare say even the quantity of mankind will be determined by the quality and quantity of your thoughts, your actions, your judgments. Mankind’s future depends at least to a degree upon what you decide to do with the seed of learning planted in you at Plain- view High School. My hope is that you can go forth and be forever known as that generation that exalts not fads, but God and human reason that prefers to focus on integrity, justice, character, honor, and on such phases as faith in God and digni- ty of the human person. ni 1982 — Tite Unforgettable Week “Good afternoon, Plainview High; Beat Hereford!” Mrs. Beverly Lance’s phone greeting was only one of many phases of en- couragement that boosted Homecoming spirits. This year changes in the traditional ceremonies added to the excitement of the week. This particular year, Homecoming bout would be against Plainview’s arch rival, Hereford. Hall decorations rolled off the week to a great start. Competitions between the classes increased school spirit with the Juniors taking first place. Thursday night was almost as exciting as the main event itself. A car decorating contest began the evening at Bulldog Stadium. This was won by the cosmetology van and their group received a $ 50 cash prize. Participants of the contest and en- thusiastic fans formed a car caravan out to the bonfire. The bonfire was topped with a Hereford mascot dummy and cow. Cheers were sent up as both figures went up in flames. Although the excitement was tremendous, only Friday night’s activities could raise tensions further. With a sold out game, the Angry Red Bulldogs took on the Hereford Whitefaces with skill and determination. At half time the stands claimed with anticipation as Bertha Sanchez was crowned Homecoming Queen. Her court consisted of Kristi Kay Ben- nett, Liz Hart, Leah Kay Lyle, Gina Reed and Sonja Snelling. After the 21-7 romp over the Herd the evening ended in a full swing Homecoming dance. The efforts of the student body, Angry Red and PHS alumni resulted in one unforgettable week. Rita and Nita Sanders, Liz Hart lead cheers prior to the burning of the bonfire. These things have always been a j art of tradition. This year, coronation held a more beautiful arrangement of colors, styles and sequence. Bou- quets were replaced with delicate long stem roses. Queen Bertha and her court were presented to the audience. Afterwards, the Lords and Ladies took their positions. Royal Entertainment was provided by Secord Hour Band and Bennie Witherspoon. The court then dismissed and gathered at Saint Alice Catholic Church for the coronation dance. For Seniors, Coronation was the first of many parties in which seniors are exclusively together. They slowly begin to realize that soon these close friends will only be special memories of 1984. Top Left, Bottom Row: Kristi Lee Bennett, Nikki Harris, Marie Hooper, Sheila Landry. The Bat- tling Bulldogs tied for the crown along with Amarillo, Monterey, and Hereford. Amarillo managed to beat everyone else on the field, but Plainview, Monterey, and Hereford found themselves faced with a three way tie. The Angry Red fell odd man out in the first round of the coin toss, while Hereford went on to win the second toss against Monterey. The Bulldogs would have had an assured trip to Bi-District if only they had scored once more against Monterey or Amarillo. With experienced running backs and fresh new talent in the front lines, the Bulldogs pulled together for a successful season. The most flustrating games had to be against Monterey and Amarillo. These bat- tles were fought for desperately, but the Bulldogs simply ran out of time. Yet it is safe to say the happiest victory would be that of Homecoming night. The Herd fell before the Awesome Angry Red. With the end of the season, All-District teams were announced and the Bulldogs filled in well. 1st team offense: Chad Cole (tackle), Randy Williams (tailback), and Ronnie Bradic (Fullback). 1st team defense: Roy Thompson (end), David McAdoo (linebacker), and Moises Castillo (kicker). 2nd team offense: Steve George (quarterback), and Jerry Vera (guard). 2nd team defense: Jerry Vera (tackle), and Ron- nie Ortegon (defensive back). Honorable Mention teams included: Joe Shultz, Ernest Herrea, David Perez, Stacy McGuire, Col- in Miller, Don Ferguson, Lee Jones, and Brent Richburg. The fans remained ‘Loyal to Effort’ as the Bulldogs battled for distinction. Even though the Bulldogs didn’t see any Bi-District action. Coach Greg Sherwood, his coaching staff and the Angry Red Bulldogs proved themselves worthy of that loyalty. ANGRY RED NUFF SAID! Lamed by last year’s graduation, this year’s team was composed of ten Seniors and two Juniors; all very talented young men. Returning from last year’s season were Senior starters Steve George, Roy Thompson, Mike Baker, and Randy Williams. With these men as leaders, the Bulldogs began the process of stabilizing the Angry Red team. The team pulled and struggled together, playing well yet finished the season with only a fair season. Seniors Williams, Baker, and George showed a persistent rate of leadership, while Juniors Richard Senter and Shawn Lance promised to lead next year’s team with experience. In the Pioneer-Lion’s Classic, the Angry Red won two out of three games and placed third in the tournament. During the Christmas Holidays the Bulldogs never stopped working and traveled to the Hobbs Tournament. Losing two out of three games to top qualifying teams the Bulldogs returned home with more experience under their belts. All district honors went to Randy Williams and Mike Baker, both on the second team. Steve George and Roy Thompson qualified for places on the Honorable Mention teams. Varsity trainers are Todd Heflin, Roger Starr, and Donald Loflin. Although most of the team graduated in ’83, Cynthia Hemphill came back this season and brought in a fresh new and eager Junior line-up. Hemphill, Christi Aday, Robin Matthews and Vicki Richburg were all secured starters at the first of the season, with many qualified teammates waiting to fill the fifth spot. The season rose and fell, then promised and then never came through. If anything was left it was the experience and promise for next year’s team. The Seniors for next year will show much ex- perience and lots of leadership. The season ended with All-District Honors going to Cynthia Hemphill and Ramona Black for Second team. When Jesus came to Plainview, we simply passed Him by, We never hurt a hair of Him, we didn’t cause Him to die; For men had grown more tender, and we would not give Him pain, we only just passed down the street, and left Him in the rain. Still Jesus cried, “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And it continued to rain the winter rain that drenched Him through and through. The crowds went home and left the streets without a soul to see, And Jesus crouched against a wall, and cried for Calvary. Not content to rest on its rich heritage, however, Wayland has continued to make significant advances in every phase of its operation. Today it offers 12 degree programs on the associate, baccalaureate and master’s degree levels in fields of study ranging from automotive mechanics and agribusiness to music theory and theology. Wayland takes special pride in its “personal touch” approach to Christian education, as the university’s 1,800 students enjoy a faculty-student ratio of about 1:12. The beautiful 80-acre campus in the heart of Plainview provides the finest in facilities—from the stately administration building, Gates Hall, to the ultramodern McClung University Center. A major addition to the library is already under construction. An outstanding athletic program that produced 17 All-Americans and five national champions last year, excellent opportunites for student involvement on campus, an exceptional financial aid program, and people reaching out to provide the finest in Christian academic training—all this and much, much more go together to give Wayland a reason for “Celebrating Excellence.” ‘The Pride of The Plains” Wayland Baptist University Plainview, Texas 79072-6998 • Phone (806) 296-5521 250 All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth. In case you did not know some of them have come back to haunt the classrooms of P.H.S. as teachers. Those teachers that were once in the same state of mind that students are in their classes are Mrs. Virginia Butler, Mrs. Nancy Baucum, Mrs. Cindy Young, Mrs. Regina Clark, Mrs. Paula Williams, Mrs. Sue Kidwell, Mrs. Lisa Kersh, Miss Cynthia Gregory, Mrs. Judy Buchanan, Mr. Greg Patridge and Sharon Harder. Butler replied, “No I felt like I was coming home.’' Mrs. Butler is married has has three children. Paula Williams graduated from PHS in 1957. Mrs. Williams commented that Mr. Ryan was the only teacher from that time, that is still here. He was her junior high band teacher and was occasionally assisting the high school band director.
