of Sami As I think now of what it means to me, And must to all of us whose hands Have fumbled through thick books of history And struggled with a pen to meet the strict demands Of grammar laws that only Plato could clearly see, The query risesg what is school indeed? A training shop where we are taught to write and read? The answer's written here in my heart, There's a chamber for it set apart, I wonder if these inkfsmudged fingers hold the key To the heavy hidden chest of memory. These things I have loved and they'll remain When cold dry facts have slipped like sands Through a sieve down time's roaring main And only the stuff of dreams the soul still retains: The sudden flash of understanding in Another's eyes that tells you there's a friend Where before was but a stranger, The tense second of silence before the cheers When the Bulldogs scored and the stands went wild. Faces glowing in the light of a leaping bonfire, The first ripple of applause that spread Across the auditorium in assembly, Fragments of bland music and mingled singing Voices that drifted upstairs into a chemistry class, The rustling, humming, droning, busy bustle Of the study hall with a December wind howling outside, The genial, shoulder'rubbingfelbowfbumping Crowd that filled the hall at the noon bell, Shelves of books standing quietly at Attention in the library, A steamy, inky, dusty, musty smell mingled With the tang of frying meat in the cafeteria. Education is preparation for life, the learned fellow says But I say rahl a thousand hearing rahs! For school is Life! and school is youth. A matchless, shifting. surging tide of youth, Laughing, loving, singing a bold new song. Powerful with a restless, vibrant energy. But what is youth? A flash of firefwhite lightning that splits A violet night sky with jagged flame? A taubstringed fiddle life plays on? I do not knowg I only know that here there is A magic flame that may yet warm a frigid world.
