Prim cipa PLAINVIEW PUBLIC SEHDDLS urr-'n:E DF PRINCIPAL PLAINVIEW, TEXAS To the Student Body Plainview High School My dear students: What is this Education to which we give so much time and attention? Some one has defined education as the sum total of all our experiences which modify our natural im- pulses. Schooling is the small part of our education which is gained in school and from teachers. Why do we need to go to school and otherwise gain an education? Brief- ly, it is to save time and futile experiences. Insects do some marvelous things and carry on a complicated life and social system. They seem to do this almost entirely by instinct and do not learn much from experience. Some other animals like the dog have certain instincts and in addition some reasoning powers. In other words, they profit by experience. Now man has similar instincts, has reasoning power, and can learn by experience. Without education each person would have to experience or reason out everything or bit of knowledge he acquired. In such a case a person would have to spend a long life time learning only a few things which are common knowledge to the average elementary school child. By reading we can appropriate all the knowledge and experience of ancient and contemporary scholars, scientists and geniuses. Shall we neglect so great an opportunity? Shall we close our minds and be led by the blind instincts of an insect, shall we live a dog's life? Only to shame our- selves and our great heritage. We cannot, in honor, do less than to mount the great pyramid of the wisdom of the race and go upward from there. Yours truly, R. W. DAVIDSON. I may 1, 1940.

MELVA ABBOTT Needles and pins, needles and pins, They have their outs, they have their ins. With this teacher of clothing they have a swell chance. To make your mouth water and your eyes want to dance. Are her clothes pretty? Do-es she know her stuff? One look at her beauty and you are convinced sure enough. Mas. H, F. AXTELL If you hear a gentle warble, and then a great outburst, Do nothing rash, you must investigate it first. 'Tis choral dear, they're giving all they've got To reach those high C's and put them on the spot. Teacher has a gentle voice and she will pull them through. We're not all alarmed, we know what she can do, ELLEN CAMPBELL She teaches English. Her own photo, my dear. She poses all alone, but when class is over The boy friend will appear and he will take her hand. There are no nouns or verbs involved-but l'm sure yOu'll understand. R. C. DAVIDSON His eyes and ears and hands are tuned. And woe is you, by gum, If you should play C Major when it should have been the drum. Chief can hear a sharp or flat for over half a mile. If 'Gabriel's horn doesn't sound just right, There'll be for him no Heaven, GLEN HARRISON A home town boy makes good, and good is right I say! His Spanish translations are like a Ronfdeflay, His good Ole Alma Mater is good Ole Plainview High. Someday he'll have a chair, oh my. oh my, oh my. Mas. PAT HORTON, JR. She has her pretty finger in everybody's pie, And if her plans aren't carried out, she will all but die! To enumerate her doin's would take all the printer's ink, But she's a grand little somebody. That's what we fellows think. D. C. ARTHUR If you don't know your stuff, boy, you're sank! He teaches geometry and is painfully frank. He is doing his best to train you nitfwits. Because he knows if you fail, your Ma will have fits! M. C. BRANDON Meet the nice teacher of Vocational Agriculture. If you'll try to get what he wants you to learn, With his kindly good help, you won't want to lag. You'll be so smart, you'll have knowledge to burn! RUTH CUNNINGHAM l'm sure this English teacher could say without a page, All the written poetry of any year or age. English is her one loveg cats, they are the other, If asked which one she loved the most, She could not tell one from the other! LOTTIE GRAvEs She may forget her lipstick, her rouge and powderpuff- But her History, no, no, no, she really knows that stuff! ! If you'll listen closely with your hand up to your ear, There's lots that she can tell you-If only you can hear! JAMES HODOE A commercial? No, The commercial. Make it plenty hot! We can and we will. We'll give it all we've got. Typing and shorthand is his line, one other thing we mention, That he's sponsoring the annual, so please do pay attention! Bigger and better than ever, better in every way. When you see the Annual '40, I'm sure that's what you'll Say. J. V. HILLIARD He is the coach and he's goodflooking, And he is putting all he's got Into making his team conscious That if they really will get hot, They can put this city on the map without a blot!
