But never, so far as we can remem- ber, has an annual been dedicated to that group that makes the annual possible-the student body. l And so this year, the 1940 Plain- view is dedicated, with realization of their loyalty and appreciation of their school spirit, to the student body of Plainview High, those boys and girls about whom the annual is written, the boys and girls for whom the annual is written, the boys and girls who make the annual. my-2, ...H X Ealitors 7 Note Sometimes We wonder Why an education is so important, why We go to school year after year- learning Who squared the hypotenuse, Why Rome fell, or why bend the rainbow. We Wonder Why We should Write ad astra per asp-era with a piece of chalk when it would be so much easier to plunk the fellow in front of us on the head With it. All these years that We spend on our educa- tion helps us to find ourselves and what We are best suited for, to understand ourselves and our people, the Way We live and how We should live. The principles of our Democratic government are founded upon the education of our men and Women. Without that education we cannot fully appreciate nor understand the liberty and free- dom which is ours, which enables us to enjoy life to the utmost. With these thoughts in mind we feel that ed- ucation is a Worthy theme for our annual for 1940. We have made it the best We know how and if it pleases you, the student body, then our efforts Will be rewarded. The Boami of Trustees The School Board of Education of the Plainview Schools is composed of seven members elected by the voters of the Plainview School District. The Board is an executive body with many responsibilities. It convcnes once each month for regular meetings to transact business of various kinds The Members of the Board: E. G. ALEXANDER, President GLENN A. SMITH, Vice Pvesident GUY H. BOUNDS, Sec. and Trees, O. LAAS, Superintendent W. B. DAVENPORT G, A. SHOOK T. O. COLLIER MRS. F, E. GAVE MRS. ELLIS CARTER Superhfzzlenalenf PLAINVIEW PUBLIC SCIHDDLS D. J. l.AAs, suPsmNTENDEN'r PLAlNVlEW,TEXAS To the Student Body May 1, 1940, Plainview High School Dear Students: The Annual Staff'has chosen for the theme of their book the thought expressed by the word, education. It is a fine theme. It is excellent to have uppermost in your mind the thought of self-improvement. May I suggest that in your quest for higher grounds that you always bear in mind the growth of your personality. It is that part of you that makes you different from all the other people and it also constitutes characteristics that are common in many. It is the sum total of all of your reactions to all stimuli that may come to you. lt gives you that form of individuality by which you are known and remembered, by which you are hated or loved or admired. .The growth of your personality can be determined by you to a great extent. Into its warp and woof are woven weak threads and strong threads that are spun by all Tfh01-lghf-S and deeds of evil, by all thoughts and deeds of' good, from the influences y seek of art, music and literature and from all the beautiful and noble and inspir- ing achievements of mankind. Sincerely, O. J. LAAS, Superintendent. L 7, , OU Prim cipa PLAINVIEW PUBLIC SEHDDLS urr-'n:E DF PRINCIPAL PLAINVIEW, TEXAS To the Student Body Plainview High School My dear students: What is this Education to which we give so much time and attention? Some one has defined education as the sum total of all our experiences which modify our natural im- pulses. Schooling is the small part of our education which is gained in school and from teachers. Why do we need to go to school and otherwise gain an education? Brief- ly, it is to save time and futile experiences. Insects do some marvelous things and carry on a complicated life and social system. They seem to do this almost entirely by instinct and do not learn much from experience. Some other animals like the dog have certain instincts and in addition some reasoning powers. In other words, they profit by experience. Now man has similar instincts, has reasoning power, and can learn by experience. Without education each person would have to experience or reason out everything or bit of knowledge he acquired. In such a case a person would have to spend a long life time learning only a few things which are common knowledge to the average elementary school child. By reading we can appropriate all the knowledge and experience of ancient and contemporary scholars, scientists and geniuses. Shall we neglect so great an opportunity? Shall we close our minds and be led by the blind instincts of an insect, shall we live a dog's life? Only to shame our- selves and our great heritage. We cannot, in honor, do less than to mount the great pyramid of the wisdom of the race and go upward from there. Yours truly, R. W. DAVIDSON. I may 1, 1940. Fczcuffy MELVA ABBOTT B. Through all her busy hours, she is patient, sweet, and kind, Another secretary just like her would be hard for you to find. ELLIS M. MILLS Speech is not his major. Speech to him's a chore. And after forty variations of one thing, he really does get sore! And then he gets reminiscent and talks about that boy And the daughter named Linda, these are his pride and joy. A., University of Texas of Sami As I think now of what it means to me, And must to all of us whose hands Have fumbled through thick books of history And struggled with a pen to meet the strict demands Of grammar laws that only Plato could clearly see, The query risesg what is school indeed? A training shop where we are taught to write and read? The answer's written here in my heart, There's a chamber for it set apart, I wonder if these inkfsmudged fingers hold the key To the heavy hidden chest of memory. These things I have loved and they'll remain When cold dry facts have slipped like sands Through a sieve down time's roaring main And only the stuff of dreams the soul still retains: The sudden flash of understanding in Another's eyes that tells you there's a friend Where before was but a stranger, The tense second of silence before the cheers When the Bulldogs scored and the stands went wild. Faces glowing in the light of a leaping bonfire, The first ripple of applause that spread Across the auditorium in assembly, Fragments of bland music and mingled singing Voices that drifted upstairs into a chemistry class, The rustling, humming, droning, busy bustle Of the study hall with a December wind howling outside, The genial, shoulder'rubbingfelbowfbumping Crowd that filled the hall at the noon bell, Shelves of books standing quietly at Attention in the library, A steamy, inky, dusty, musty smell mingled With the tang of frying meat in the cafeteria. Education is preparation for life, the learned fellow says But I say rahl a thousand hearing rahs! For school is Life! and school is youth. A matchless, shifting. surging tide of youth, Laughing, loving, singing a bold new song. Powerful with a restless, vibrant energy. But what is youth? A flash of firefwhite lightning that splits A violet night sky with jagged flame? A taubstringed fiddle life plays on? I do not knowg I only know that here there is A magic flame that may yet warm a frigid world. Q9 mm X ufckxa. vii: Senior Officers PRESIDENT R. C. Opening nite at the new Trocadero brought out many of the social biggies and the usual crowd of evening celebrants. Dancing under the palms to the rhythm of Randall Keeney's Swingadieres were the Mayor, the Mexican consul, and other highfranking officers of the city and state. Paul Shick, President of the Catfish Club, was seen with his wife, the former Miss Marian Hinn. Esquirish young manfabout-town Jack Bristol was there with Miss Mary Earl Alexander. Your correspondent predicts an early tiefup for these two. R. C. Malone and his fiancee, Miss Margaret Ann Meinecke, were joined at their table early in the evening by Levin Gosney, Oregon lumber king, and Jean Owens Baum Parker Du Barry Astor, who is at the present Public Divorcee No. l, and best known Renoist since the Ioan Hinds Garrett Waller days. Songsmiths Bond and Poage, whose latest warble, Boogie Woffie Woo, is sweeping the country, were hounded by fem autograph fans and left early with a couple of the chorines. Frank McGlasson stagged as usual. The opening nite gang was a little astonished, not to say flabbergasted, when Crofford Hef- flefinger fslightly the worse, no doubt, for having consumed too many Triple Bourbonsj left his party to take the spotlight and do an impromptu stripftease, much to the delight of the chorus and the embarrassment of his companion of the evening, Miss Bobbie Nell Weldon .... Graham, business manager of the Plainview Evening Herald is attempting a successful 'leternal triangle affair. Both girls are editors of high school papers. So with this your correspondent signs off, hoping to have made no one mad and leaving many of the class of '4O's accomplishments untold. One can be assured that they will accomplish many great and successful things. Eaiucafion To the entertaining game of chess, Wie shall consider our lives a likeness. The chessboard is the world in which we live, Each block a step of take and givc. The pieces used in playing are the universe mature, The rules of the game, we call the law of Nature. Our patient partner is hidden from us, And we know his plays to be fair and just. But he ne'er overlooks a mistake, or makes allowance, For our blunders due to ignorance. To him who plays well, highest praise is paid, And on him, honors of the game are laid, Train for the hard play which comes after this. Make it a winning play filled with bliss. Strive for the learning of better things, Work for the honors that knowledge brings. But, let us not strive for honors alone, For fame may pass, and then it is gone. Moreover let us move for a goal noble and good: That of man and womanhood. Before we begin let us know well the rules, Have the equipment, and use it as tools. Heed the teachings of a superior mind. For clear plays are not made, when the player is blind. Let the experienced player be our inspiration, And play well from the rules learned in a good education 'T .afy Q 5155? f ,f5fff: f TMWZW AQWMWLJK 41' SQYQGNX 0999 QM M MMM W9 M 1 W 4UmZ.f. I5-Our game with Bowie High School of El Paso was postponed 'till today because of rain. Thus prolonging the suspense of wondering what we can do under pressure. This is our first test and a strange silence crept over us. Each reviewing in his mind his assignments and praying that the folks back home would not be disappointed with the outcome of the game. On the bus out to the field we were tense and every heart pounded like a steam engine, eager for the game to get under way. We battled for sixty long minutes on a muddy field and at the end of that period we were tired but happy. We! won 610. Small as the score might be it was a victoryg yes, our first victory. I think we stood the test. Sept. 22-Nip and Tuck was the game with Polytechnical of Fort Worth, and the score was a tie, 6'6. We fought those boys hard and long, but ai tie seemed inevitable. Our offense seemed weak and so did our pass defense, but we were still in good spirits and full hopes for a bright and victorious future. Sept. 29-Tonight we received our first taste of Conference Ball this year with Borger. Bulldogs against Bulldogs caused some real hairfraising action. Every play was a question mark. The score at the half was 7f6 in our favor. In the early minutes of the last half we drove eighty yards for a counter but failed to get the extra point, making the score 13f6. Then Borger got off a long pass for a score, tying the score 1543. The game ended that way. The penetrations were tied 3f3, but we won on first downs, 13-10. We are really weak on pass defense. Oct. 6e-We are getting back in the stride again for tonight we just reaped sweet revenge from Quanah who had beaten the tar out of us a few years back. Our offense looked good and we could see improvement in our pass defense. The score was 19f6. All the people in town are behind us, inspiring us to keep carrying the torch high. I hope we can keep their confidence. Oct. 13-We fought Pampa with all we had but somehow nothing seemed to work. We were against a superior ball club, and all we could do was tor fight them. That we did, but our efforts were fruitless. We were defeated 1610. I am afraid that everyone was disappointed in us, but in every Bulldog's heart he knew that he did his best. Oct. 20-Everyone said that Electra would beat us five touchdowns, but the Bulldogs had to be shown. We put our heart and soul into that game and fought: against those odds and we were not ashamed of the score of l5f0, which was made: in the first part of the game. The last three quarters we buckled down and held them. Oct. 27-Outweighed 30 pounds to the man, we went up against the Sandies with a determination that they were going to have a hard time handling us. We had been looking forward to this game and went on the field with a battle on our hands and blood in our eyes. They beat us alright, 15f0, but they earned every point of it. Nov. 11-Today we bowed in honorable defeat to a team that was superior and a team that could really play football. The Lubbock Westerners trampled us 19f0 in a hardffought gridiron battle. This was the hardest game we had played but'those Lubbock boys just had us bested. Nov. I7-We really had the fun in the game with LI-Iollis, Okla. We beat them 14112. This was a good way to climax the regular season, because our plays worked to perfection and we really rocked and socked. After seeing this game, the fans seemed to forgive us for all our defeats. Dec. Z9-Tonight we played the toughest game of the season against Biloxi, Miss. We lost 18f7, but no Bulldog regrets losing to such a fine group of boys. This is the last game of the season, and a lump comes in our throats when we think that we have finished playing the last game of football for Plainview High. We have done our best to uphold the honor of the Plainview Bulldogs. a name we're proud of. Baskeflvaff The season this year was successful and attested to the fine spirit and cooperation which motivated the boys with whom Coach Vannoy works. TOP ROW--Ray Harlan, Milford Mason, E. AIM The Student Council, newly organized during the fall semester of the '39340 term, seeks to unify and harmonize school activities through worthy projects which promote fellowship, loyf alty, and initiative. Its prime objective is to afford the student body a representatve medium of expression which will enable them to think and work out constructive plans in an orderly, democratic manner. This year the Council has presented two- assembly programs, erected a flagpole, prepared a handbook for next year, decorated the building for the Christmas season. and acted as guides and ushers during the Teachers' Conference and the Band Conference held here. This balanced tension results in poise. The poise acquired in handling a machine will he an asset -to you socially, as well as in business. For if you have poise you will never be self' conscious and awkward. You will be selffconfident. You will be interested not only in your own thoughts and dreams, but in other people and their hopes and desires, and in the world around you. v jjj-20 4fyjML, , , W f 0 Debate 7 Y' ' FEW Sponsor ........ ......A....,.,,,...,.... ......, E L LIS M. From the debate class shown above came two teams which represented P. H. S. in the district Interscholastic League meet at Lubbock. The boys' team was composed of Charles Bond and James Smith, and the girls' team of Edith Poole and Bonnie Faye Goodrich. Two other teams participated in tournaments and debated during the season. These teams were composed of Lois Reams and Martha Thomas, and Bruce Smith and Jack Hawkins. Other members of the class who participated in such speech events as extemporaneous speaking and declamation were Lois Evelyn Taylor, Dwight Nance, and Weldoin Nicholson. The Plainview girls won two invitation tournaments at Lockney and Floydada. The class, a newly affiliated course, Speech VI, is taught by debate coach, Ellis M. Mills. Um' Compensation Listen students, and ye shall laugh About a joke-The Plain View Staff. The bunch that always get a pass: The bunch that always cuts a class. They never check at roll at all, They never stay in Study Hall. They loaf around from eight 'till four No more done than the day before. There's lots of things they never dog Now you have the students' view. Listen students, and ye shall see What the staff men think of thee. A bunch that won't cooperate, A bunch that don't appreciate. You want an annual, yes you do, You crave to know when it is through. You make us worry, rave and fret, For everything from you we get. Now who has the right to laugh? The students, or the Plain View Staff. ,,.,,.....,-.WW ,,.... , I . , ,,,, ,.,,. , ,, ,.,-A , , J ,,...,.v,,,.,,.,T.W,,.. ,, A ' 'r e may we me fem , , . o f J 1 i , mngvlife ,,:'? f': lf: . E5 gf...
