Last spring, we elected as our class officers, Bertrice Wood, President; Vicki Turner, Vice President; Karen Longo, Secretary, and Larry Carter, Treasurer. These officers, along with other competent representatives, made our careers at P.H.S. complete. They aided in the production of our Senior Play, and planned an outstanding prom, which was held on June 7 at the Brunswick Inn. The Class of °68 will long remember them for their outstanding service. Foreign Exchange Student Dear Friends: The time is almost over; it has gone much too fast. I want to thank all of you who helped to make this year one of the most exciting and interesting years I’ve ever had. It is really not too easy to live for one year in a foreign country. I was lucky to come to a city with such wonderful students. At the beginning, everything was terribly con- fusing because everything is so different, but then everybody — teacher and students —- were so friendly and helpful that I soon began to feel perfectly at home. I was especially impressed by all that was going on in P.H.S. In Germany there are no activities in the schools, so all the clubs, activities, and football games were a great deal of fun. You can be sure that I will never forget P.H.S. Good luck to Seniors in their first year out of high school and all my friends in P.H.S. Auf Wiedersehen, DAGMAR SCHAEFTER Dagmar lets her thoughts wander to her native Germany. Dagmar and her American ‘‘sister’’ Bertrice Wood Perhaps a year is too long? walk through the bright halls of P.H.S. aD 94 Senior Play Ken Druse Jonathan Lippman Bob Millenky Faigy Locker Larry Carter Laughter could be heard through- out the school on two of the most entertaining nights to be had at P.H.S. in a long time. If one had traced these happy sounds, he would have inevitably ended up in our auditorium. The occasion: the 1968 Senior Class Play. Our troupe presented the comedy farce in three acts, ‘‘See How They Run.” To the full auditorium, the story, which takes place in an English vicarage, met with enthusiastic approval. The players successfully portrayed this complicated satire, which relied on continual cases of mistaken identity. With lead roles played by such talented people as Nina Simkin, playing Penelope Toop, and Bob Millenky, as Clive, the Play was destined to succeed. The excellent supporting cast of Jon Lippman, Faiga Locker, Pat Balcius, Louis Scholnick, Larry Carter, and Bob Griffiths added the extra color needed for a perfect combination and a successful play. The success was aided by the superb direction of Mrs. Draper and the student director, Susan Blumert. The Senior Play was one that the school can be proud of, and it will be remembered by the fortun- ate people who witnessed the truly wonderful performance. Getting lost in crowded halls, finding ourselves in the wrong classrooms, buying passes to nonexistent elevators, we endured the first hectic week. Then classes began in earnest, and new experiences soon faded into weekly monotony. It was a year of transition in other areas, also. As boys grew their hair longer, girls cut theirs shorter. The Beatles and the Stones dominated the rock music field. New dances, such as the Skate and the Boogaloo, could be seen at our Sophomo re dance, “‘’68 a Go-Go.” Later that year, class council officers were elected for our Junior year: Bertrice Wood, Bob Milligan, Larry Carter, and Jan Koscinski. In June, we struggled through our first two-hour exams, but also enjoyed the mornings or afternoons off during the week. Exams were finally over, and we all enjoyed our summer to the utmost. Long, lazy days at the shore were a welcome change from the rigors of daily classes. As always, however, the joys of summer were short-lived. The beginning of junior year was less confusing. We watched with mirth the discomfort of the new sophomore class. Plans were made for a new high school, and work began on the razing of nearby houses. The muffled sounds of bulldozers were welcome indeed during the long school day. Welcome also was the new psychedelic movement. The new Beatles and other groups began experiments in electronic sound effects, and psychedelic posters adorned the walls of our rooms. Our Junior class dance, ‘“‘Spring Shing-a-Ling,’’ expressed the feelings of our new generation. The psychedelic look even invaded our school dress, as plaid pants and mini-skirts entered the scene. Hardly psychedelic, but great nevertheless, was our triumph in the Interclass Play Contest. Our Junior Thespians dominated throughout with their fine presentation of Spoon River Anthology. It is a rare class indeed that could win such a competition over a talented senior class. Equally talented were all the performers in the impressive Del-Phonics concert. Their professional showmanship produced an unforgettable evening of that great Soul Sound. This performance also contributed generously to our class treasury. Thinking ahead to the Senior Prom, the class council sponsored candy and crew shirt sales. These lucrative ventures were responsible for holding down the tickets to the Prom. Our Junior year ended on a promising note. No longer naive sophomores but mature seniors-to-be, we elected as our Senior Class Council officers Bertrice Wood, Vicki Turner, Larry Carter, and Karen Longo to lead us during our Senior year. Summer between Junior and Senior years was hardly peaceful, with Plain- field suffering from the direct effects of the long, hot, summer. However, the only abnormality in September was the new bell system adopted by the school. Despite the problems of the summer, Senior year promised to be our happiest and most successful at P.H.S. We enjoyed the privilege of giving Sophomores the wrong directions, and driving everywhere while the underclassmen walked. After an undefeated football season, the only thing that saddened us was the announce- ment of Coach Smith’s retirement. Despite early tendencies toward ‘‘Senioritis,”’ we sweated through college applications and job interviews. The promise of our Thespians for Interclass was fulfilled with the hilarious production of our Senior Play, See How They Run. Our dress code was revised, and boys appreciated the less restricting attitude on length of hair. Our Senior year was full of excitement, right up to our great prom. Not even its proximity to exams could diminish the joy that the Prom and subsequent trips to the shore brought us. As the year and our life at P.H.S. drew to a close, we looked back nostalgically at the preceding three years. However, most of us fixed our gaze upward to unknown heights and future challenges. We remain confident; the spirit of P.H.S. will not fail to guide us over any future obstacles. oo 100 ET : Ce tiey cee on ens 6 i i ACTIVITIES Student Council The Student Council executive officers: Jan Koscinski, Treasurer; Mary Braxton, Secretary; Bill Hanley, Vice-President; SS emaoecermnasno Ricky Lang, President. ie Ed Ricky Lang, aided by his officers, discusses future projects to be attempted by the council. SPORTS Football Coach Smith and Bob Milligan, a winning combination. 130 The Cardinal football team, led by Coaches Abe Smith, Richard Kern, Lou Wonsidler, Eugene Hubka, and Ken Bowman, posted an 8-0-1 record, the first unbeaten season for PHS in 9 years. The 13-13 tie with Union marred an otherwise perfect season. A spectacular back- field combined with great depth gave the gridmen the co-ownership of the Central Jersey Group IV crown. ‘The two highlights of the season were the 40-0 rout over South Side and the 13-7 Thanksgiving Day victory over arch-rival West- field. PHS will miss its graduating seniors, but unquestionably the greatest loss Plainfield will suffer is that of Head Coach Abe Smith. After 25 years of service, Mr. Smith has retired as head of the football team. Words cannot describe the gratitude that this year’s team, and the 24 pre- ceding teams, have for him. This year’s Cross-Country team suffered a season of dual meet losses and finished with an 0-8 record. The squad was hurt by the loss of Coach Roger Meador, a late start, and lack of depth. The prospects for next year are excellent, however, with lettermen John Morse, Steve Rosenthal, and Joe Urquhart returning. This year the harriers were led by the consistent running of senior Charlie Schneekloth, who was always among the leaders Mr. Harry Lambert coached the squad. He set a new single game scoring rcord of 40 points against Union. Also important in the Cardinal attack were seniors Warren Luck and Rod Plummer. Although the wrestling tearm has had a disappoint- ing season with a record of 3-8-1, the Cards can boast of several capable wrestlers. Especially outstanding this year were the Bailey brothers, Ed and Bob. Each has compiled an excellent record and Ed won the state title in the 130 Ib. weight class. Paul Chambers, Mark Hitzig, and Frank Johnson also did well for PHS this year. Mr. Pepe, after coaching the wrestlers for 10 years, announced that he will not return next season as coach. Of course, he had good material to work with. Steve James and Charlie Schneekloth set new school records in the javelin and long distance events, re- spectively. Underclassmen DeWayne Elmore and George Weaver showed promise of new records in their events. Because the team was young and well balanced in 1967, PHS can look forward to a truly memorable 1968 campaign. Returning this year are Roger McCray, George Weaver, Clarence Harris, DeWayne Elmore, Charlie Schneekloth, Frank Johnson, and Warren Stewart. Mr. Lambert will be the 1968 track coach. Highlights in the season included the team’s second place in the Central Jersey Group IV Championship and Frank O’Brien’s county and state titles. Mr. Pepe will certainly miss Frank O’Brien, Richard Strait, Mike Rosenthal, Ralph Haynsworth, and Benjamin Bilus, the graduated seniors.
