Dear Graduates: You have earned and now possess a Plain- field High School diploma. For 85 years other graduating classes have preceded you, beginning with one of only 30 students in 1860. You may well feel proud of your Alma Mater. In the classrooms you now leave be- hind have sat students of former years, many of whom have won national fame in the arts and sciences. Some of you are also destined for signal success. Whatever your aims, all will be going out into a world torn asunder by a disastrous war, into a world where ideals have been shattered, where civilization has trembled in the balance. We of this generation have made stupen- dous scientific advances, many of which are now being used to destroy mankind and the very foundations of civilization are being shakeng all because our social sciences ,have not kept pace with the purely scientific. It has yet to be proven that The Pen Is Mightier Than The Sword. This will be I ARTHUR F. HOPPER B.S., M.A., Columbia University Acting Superintendent your task, your goal and your opportunity. Yours will be the tremendous problem of advancing the social sciences parallel with scientific development so that all may be used for the well-being of man rather than for his destruction. No generation ever faced a graver issueg no graduating class ever faced a greater responsibility. All the fine traditions of your Alma Mater go with you. As graduates of Plainfield High School, you will make your contribution to the great cause of freedom and democ- racy. In your time it should be written, The Pen Has Proven Mightier Than The Sword. Sincere wishes for your success in the great task that confronts you. A. F. HOPPER Dean of Girls LULA K. HOFF A.l!., Temple University M.S., University of Pennsylvania Dean ol Boys GEORGE A.
