There are few school traditions, regulations, or activities that have not in some manner been influenced, guided or directed by his enthusiasm, patience and sincere interest. He was born in Alameda, California, but spent most of his early life in Stockton where he graduated from College of the Pacific. His main interest as a young man was baseball and he worked out with several major league teams. He later played professional baseball in the California League for two seasons. He taught high school in Linden, California for two years and served for two years as a lieutenant in the Medi- cal Reserve Corps. In 1955 he came to Whittler and taught history and English, and coached basketball and baseball at Whittier High. He spent two years teaching at Sierra High and trans- ferred to Pioneer when it opened in 1959. Since that time he has played a vital role in making Pioneer the outstanding school that it is today. He now lives in Whittier with his wife, Helen, and their children, Lee Ann aged ten, Charles aged eight, and Mark aged four and a half. It is with deep appreciation and admiration that we respectfully dedicate the 1966 TORCH to Pioneer ' s Assistant Principal, Business and Activities, Mr. Jerry Haines Mr. Haines, when he played professional baseball. 6 5Ji«l 9 €l?S lif ■• .. -- - . A spe- cial halftime show which was filmed and en- tered in a contest sponsored by Disneyland was Mary Popplns. This delightful show climoxed the halftime shows for the season. Another activity the band attended was the UCLA Band Day. This is the third year now that Pioneer has been invited to per- form along with other high schools at a UCLA football game. Tanyo Naiaroff Tanya is an enthusiastic supporter of all Titan games, dances, and activities. She was chosen as an honor guard by last year ' s Senior class. 21 A popular activity after football and basketball games is the after-game dance, supported by many active Titans. Popular bands like the Sheratons and the Exiles helped in making these dances suc- cessful. Again this year the Fling v as held, in which swimming, dancing, folk music and gomes as well as pizza made up the schedule of events for the evening. Sue Moriarty, Pioneer ' s Activities Chair- man, is in charge of the after-game dances this year. The convention began at 8:30 a.m. with the delegates seated, and head delegates submitting the roll to headquarters. Gary Smith presided as convention chairman while other members of the cabinet assisted. After the Star Spangled Banner, Pledge of Allegiance, and opening ceremonies the keynote speaker was introduced. Then the convention really got into the swing of things. Students participated in demonstrations, nominations, and voting for candidates. The delegates to the convention selected, in most cases, the two strongest candi- dates to run in the general election. They set up a strong slate of candidates which provided for a more spirited election. 33 i % Boys ' League Car Show Dean Stockwell ' s ' 57 Volkswagen, upper left, and Cathie Wolfe ' s ' 65 Dodqe Dart, lower right, were among the four winners of the 5th Annual Boys ' League Car Show held April 27. Tony Ferraro ' s ' 31 Model A Ford Roadster, took a first in the stock class. All entries had to be owned by the Pioneer student or by a mem- ber of his family. Each entry was judged by experts in the automobile field on the excellence of the engine, exterior and interior. 34 Fine Arts Festiva The seventh annual Fine Arts Fes+ival this year was the most ambitious project ever undertaken by the Pioneer Fine Arts department. It combined the talents of the photography and art departments, the vocal and instrumental music depart- ments, the drama department, and the industrial arts department. The Festival ran for four days and nights with the photography, industrial art and art exhibits on display throughout the four days and in the evening. These three events were judged and awards were given in each of the three fields for the most outstanding student work. A different program each evening was offered by the music and drama depart- ments. The dramatic play Dark of the Moon was performed by the drama de- partment and the Titan orchestra, wind ensemble, and band performed on alternate nights as did the Pioneer choral groups. One admission price covered all of the events. Those who attended relate that it wos a most successful and rewarding experience. Steve Solum and Cameron Ford, obove, admire the artistic efforts of fellow students. Viewers at the photography exhibit, left, com- pare notes and decide which photo should be best-in-show. Along with field trips they have had the annual Harlem Clowns Basketball game. We thank the International Club because if it weren ' t for their hard work we would not have a foreign ex- change student. Their projects go to pay the expenses of our ex- change students. This organization also helps sponsor many foreign assemblies throughout the year. These assemblies help enrich stu- dent ' s understanding of the songs, dances, and customs of our foreign neighbors. Carol Sobar Treasurer 75 Shino Nabeta, AFS Exchange Student Expresses Grati- tude for Titan Friendship I ' ll never forget In my whole life the wonderful year in this great country, the United States. When I first arrived in Whittier, I was really scared be- cause I did not have good English, but with the first kind words and friendly smile of my family and friends, I calmed down; and I was sure that it was a very nice place with wonderful and friendly people. As I was learning the language, I was lucky to be in a family with patience and understanding. At the beginning it was hard to communicate with them, but necessity forced me to learn this language. Shino in her native costume. When school started and I come to Pioneer, I knew that it was going to be an unforgettable year. With a warm and kindly welcome, you made me feel like I was in my home school. The first few weeks in class I passed a very hard time, because I didn ' t understand at all what the teachers were talking about, but with their patience, they helped me a lot. It is hard to say good-bye to Pioneer ' s teachers and stu- dents. I have had so much fun and so many nice experiences that I ' ll be forever grateful to you Titans and to the American Field Service for giving me this unforgettable and wonderful opportunity that I ' ll never forget. To all the Pioneer Titans good luck and happiness, and to the Titanette Drill team, thank you for giving me this wonder- ful experience, I wish you all kinds of good luck and victories in oil the parades next year and all the coming years. Thank you Titans. You may be sure you ore going to be in my memories as a beautiful dream that is hard to forget. If one of you someday in the future comes to Peru, you are going to be very welcome in my home. Thank you again and may God Bless to all of you. Love, from your Peruvian friend, Shino Nabeta It would be needless to say that I will never forget nny Aus- trian summer. The customs, the wonderful friendliness of the Austrian people, and especially the love and understanding my adopted family gave me have all become a part of me. These things are impossible to forget. But, I also learned a great deal about the United States. Meeting students from all over the United States was a wonderful opportunity to broaden my understanding of our problems as a nation. Toward the end of the summer, I began to look at the United States through the eyes of my family, and was sometimes quite surprised at the things I sow for the first time. The A.F.S. program can be only as great as the people be- hind It. All too often we forget the many people who work very hard to enable the program to grow. I wish to thank the Pioneer chapter of the American Field Service, the Inter- national Club members, and all the other people who made my trip possible. The American Field Service goal of world friendship is a long, uphill struggle, but every journey begins with a first step. It is only with your continued support that this first step can be taken. Marsha Gilpin Marsha Gilpin Adopted by an Austrian Family With Aid of AFS When I learned last spring that I had been adopted by an Austrian family, it was one of the happiest and most exciting moments of my life. Now, almost a year later, I can honestly say that I am just as excited about the American Field Service program as I was at that time. Pep Band Junior Signatures 134 n Memoriam Richard Dent Peggy Dent Pioneer Annual Staff dedicate this page of the 1966 TORCH to the Dent family. Peggy Dent, class of ' 68, and Richard Dent, class of ' 67, lost their lives in a tragic plane crash on August 8, 1965. Their mother, Rebecca Dent, a former cafeteria employee at Pioneer and father, Jomes, perished also. Their loss is greatly felt among the faculty and student body of Pioneer High. Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth. And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I ' ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung High In the sunlit silence. Hov ' ring there I ' ve chased the shouting wind along and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious burning blue I ' ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, Where never lark, or even eagle flew; And while with silent, lifting mind I ' ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space. Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. HIGH FLIGHT John Gilesple Magee, Jr. 135  .,   ' •« asK ' i ' . « t- ' .v ' . Vrr PRESIDENT DUANE HILBERG VICE PRESIDENT MARCIAGROSSBERG Sophomore Class Council Helps Generate School Spirit The Sophomore Class Council holds weekly meetings under fhe direction of he Sopho- more class officers and the class advisors, Mrs. Grant and Mr. Hillson. They sponsor many fund-raising activities during the school year to help raise money to sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom in 1967, and also to amass enough money for their Senior class gift in 1968. A few of the more successful activities this year are the bottle drive, several car washes, and battle ribbon sales. They also introduced Sophomore color day which was observed frequently throughout the year. On color day, all Sophomores are supposed to wear their class color, red. This helps generate class spirit as well as school spirit in general. SECRETARY KATHY GILWEIT T Standing: Kathy Alesi, Ton! These people must solve the hundreds of little problems that arise each day, as well as the major jobs of planning programs, advising teach- ers, and representing the school. Even with all their other duties, their doors ore always open to anyone who wants advice or help. These men and women are constantly working toward a well organized and progres- sive campus. s -— 7 ' ! ■— « m i — ;; -_i — . «• _ -iS Mr. Haines Business and Activities Mr. Schumann Curriculum Mrs. Sorensen Counseling and Guidance 207 Counselors Provide Guidance on Scholastic and Personal Problems ■' i A ' Mr. Peace Mrs. Oisen Mr. Braden Mr. Hillson Mr. Kirk Always willing and able, Pioneer ' s counseling staff Is never too busy solving such problems as discipline, class adjustments, and testing programs to lend a friendly ear to a troubled or bewildered student. 238 Swan Song Through fhe years, memories fade and events that hove happened in the past are forgotten. This year, a group of students hove done their best to keep the high school memories of the student body of Pioneer unforgettable. How have they done this? By putting as many of the events as possible, of the school year 1 965-66, in one book called THE TORCH. Who ore these students? They are the annual staff of Pioneer High School. I would especially like to thank my fellow staff members. They worked hard to solve the many problems that came up during the year and through their efforts, I believe, they have helped to put together a fine book of which we can all be proud. I would like to give a special thank you to Mrs. Thompson who was the mainstay of the staff. She did a wonderful job and the entire staff agrees that her help was priceless. We are deeply appreciative to our faculty and administrators for their patience with us, and their assistance during these past months. Without the help and co-operation of these people, and many others, the annual could never have gone to press. This annual is made up through the efforts of many people working together so that in the years to come you may look back and relive the years of your high school days through the pages of this book.
