ALL ALONE, Duke Allgood watches as a Natchitoches player goes up for a shot. FOUR TO ONE are unfair odds, but Bill May does not notice as he shoots a driving lay-up. WHAT WOULD the 1970-71 season be like? What problems would the new district create? These were just two of the many questions on the minds of Coaches Rucker and Kaiser as the Rebels prepared to embark on the 1970-71 campaign. The pressure from being the 1970 AA State Runner-up may have been responsible for the loss of the first three ball games. However, these early losses did not worry the coaches or the team to a great extent, as they felt that the little problems of the first few games could easily lx- ironed out as the season progressed. But to the dismay of everyone, these little problems that continued to crop up were not resolved, causing the Rcbs to play one of the most disappointing seasons in the school's history. What were the reasons for this ruin of a team that had four of its first six back from last season? A person could name-many reasons for this, but basically there are three: the inability to forget their hang-ups,” injuries, and the inability to think and act as a team on the floor. Even though the Rcbs did not play to their potential this year, they never gave up, even when they were eliminated from district contention. STRAINING very hard. Bonny Marzett struggles for a rebound.

HAVING ONLY three returning Icttcrmen from the previous season, the coaches had some doubt as to the success of the 1970 track season. Also there was a lack of depth in all events. However, their fears were soon allayed as they saw the hard work that each member of the squad was doing. With the running of each meet came better results, for each Rebel thindad was striving to improve himself in readiness for the district meet. The high point of the season came when the Rebel mile-relay team broke a two year old record in a time of 3:27.1. This same relay also went on to qualify for the regional and state meets, both of which were held at PUS. The thinclads from Pineville continued their industrious work and managed second place in district, capturing four firsts, five seconds, including a second in each relay, and a couple of thirds. They also qualified for eight events in the regional meet. The competition was a lot stiffer at the Regional Meet, but the Confederates still managed to qualify- in three-events of the state meet: William Cavanaugh in the 440 yard dash, I-eonard Sanderson in the 180 yard low hurdles, and the mile relay team. All in all, it was another fine year for the Rebel cindermen. WITH A heave. Mike Gaspard puts the shot. 69-‘70 I RA(,K n-.AM: FIRS'I ROW: Morris Wilmcr, Oscar Harrell.
