JUBILATION reigns as Gar)' Perkins scores against Peabody. AS WELL INDICATED by William Tuma and John Clarius. the Rebs have just recovered a Lcesvillc fumble. CATS BEFORE THE start of the 1970 football season, many people thought that Pineville would better its 1969 record of 4-5-1. As the Rebs would have eight returning starters and a lot more experience, these thoughts seem justified. The inconsistency in keeping their scoring drive alive was one of the main reasons the Rebels fell to the 1970 worksheet of 4-6. But this record does not tell the whole story of the 1970 season for the hard fighting Rebs. The first game of the season saw a new rivalry develop as Pineville clashed with the Alexandria Senior High Trojans. Even though the score was in favor of ASH. Pineville won by-forfeit as the Trojans had an ineligible player on the field. As a result of the re-classification of teams, the new schedule called for nine district ballgames. Also the Rebs jumped from 3-AA to 3-AAA. The first home game was against Oakdale. The eventual district champs proved to Ik- too strong for the Rebs and won 31-0. EXHIBITING GOOD lateral movement, linebacker Daniel Funderburk prepares to make the tackle. 99

THE TEAM showed true Reb spirit and bounced back to win the next three games. First, came the Peabody contest, another new opponent on the schedule, in which the Pineville gridders won 20-0 on a mud-soaked field. The trip to Jena proved to be worthwhile as the Rebs looked impressive in their 41-19 rout over the Giants. Next came an important district battle with Lccsville, which had just beaten Oakdale. The players were in high spirits, and their efforts were not wasted. Pineville walked away with a 14-6 triumph. The second half of the season proved to lx- a different situation. Against more powerful teams the underdog Rebs fought valiantly but could not total enough points to win any of the remaining five games. Althouth not a winning season, the tired and injury plagued Rebs had given a gocxl account of themselves.
