It is a pursuit of goodness and happiness or a race for infamy and destruction. lt is a chal- lenge to be met and conquered by the development of our intellect and character. Thus it is, we feel fitting that we record this act of our lives as a growth from rags to riches. We came clothed in the tatters of ignorance and youth and we leave rich in knowledge, confident of tomorrow and the wealth of our nation . We must express our gratitude to the people of the district, who through their foresight and understanding, have enabled future students of Pine Valley to attend a modern, better- equipped school. xg I f - K' 03638 lf of 4 g f U C? Sullivan, who has so patiently acted as Business Advisor of our Yearbook, we proudly dedicate this edition of the Pine Knot. In you, we have found the inspiration to meet and overcome all the obsta- cles that arise before success can be attained. Your loyalty, friendship, wonderful sense of humor and a perseverance-to-the-end attitude have won for you a place in the hearts of all of us. You are always most generous with your time and talents and we feel that you have done much to help us in our journey from Rags to Riches. 5 2290 ts, QQ50 If bk 0.44 Q Bo O I y Q Mrs. Clara Hall Editorial Advisor ,,, Vi AA WE LEAD, OTHERS FOLLOW , f E ' ' A WE wish to express our sincere , gratitude to the advisors of the Pine Knot - Mrs. Hall, ,ff ' Miss Mohr and Mr. Harter. Your completion of high school is more than important, something you will realize more and more as time goes on. Riches in life are those things which make it invaluable. lt is not how much you earn but how much you put into life in service to your neighbor, your friends, your country and the world. A man may stand ina hallway sur- rounded by doors. Lack of inertia and indecision will get him no where. You are not that man, you are ready to go through any of those doors of opportunity where riches are on the other side. Make your choice, worlc hard and may the good Lord always be with you for a successful life. Sincerely yytt if - - so s Curl W- Stump 'S o u r o 'e-we-...V V, ' Q e uca lon X'-.. We took part in basketball, not only the Freshman team, but the Varsit and Junior Varsity as well. We also participated in cheer- leading, band, dance band, F.H.A., F.F.A., DramaClub and many other activities. The biggest events were our class party Qfirst onelli and a roller skating party. The Richest task we did was to sponsor a donkey basketball game . We sold candy, which surely helped our ragged treasury, ang 'git usHom to a good start. Our advisors were MissMalis, MissMohr, an rs. a . ln our Sophomore year we were off to a start with a class party. Our treasury was increased greatly by selling pencils, and candy, but the big- gist mi-pnatamospgrt was sponsoriagrxtxhe it.. Patrick's Hop . Our advisors were rs. a , :ss angennan, an r. ma. Feeling more sure of ourselves tha: ever, we all tried to make our Junior Year a real success, with Miss Spencer, MissMalis, and Miss Mohr, as advisors we were trying to make our treasury a pot of gold. To do so we had a Harvest Moon Dance, Midwinter Frolic, sold Christmas cards and stationery and candy. We also held Bake Sales but our greatest asset was presenting our Junior Play The Mountain House Mystery under the direction of Miss Mohr. Finally our long-looked for Senior Year was at hand. Our goal was two-fold---o trip to New York and graduation. We needed plenty of riches so we started right in to raise money. We sold magazines, presented the play Finders Creepers, sponsored four dances and a most successful carnival. Finally we were off to New York---sighting-seeing, broadcasts, gniidfunl Nov? we are looking forward to graduation, and to what future o s in store or us. 1 X I I X oo Go 00 0 Most Athletic ' Marleen 8a Jim iq CD O' 7 3 I Most Most Shy Likely to Succeed Shin 8: Bm Hazel 8a Glenn Wittiest Bob 85 Marilyn Most Musical Dee dz Don Best Looking Mart 8: Tom M Ter ost Stubbom esa 8: Charles gr n l uf NM W 'S-u lfifx I -Xf If o o 022 lj it Cbolf SEATED: N. Included was the Senior Play, Finders Creepers. We will never forget the surprise Wilbur TG. Scottl got when he iumped into bed with the dead man U. Benthaml who later revived to dance with Granny QD. Babcockl. The Juniors presented Family Affair in which Caroline fA.Dayl received a spanking from Father U. Hollenbeckl. The Operetta, An Old Kentucky Garden, based upon the music of Stephen Foster, was a new feature this year. This presentation was very successful and enjoyed by all. We usually think of going from Rags to Riches as merely a matter of scholastic achievement but social graces are equally important. These dramatic efforts have added greatly to the Finer culture of Pine Valley Central. lst Row: P. Howard, E. Balthaser, A. Day, H. Sweeney, F. Ingersoll, F. Eckert. 2nd Row: Mr. Bleck, A. Scott, G. ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD. AUNTY, confident Juniors marched to the front-another year and the end of the rainbow is ours. We are glad and yet sad to find that all of life is a school. We were very busy because already we could hear the train whistle calling us. We had a dance-the Farmers Frolic sold many beautiful Christmas Cards and stationery. But our most exciting moment was the day we got our class rings. Learning fast, we even dared tread the thespian boards and produce a very successful play, A Family Affair. lst Row: R. Case, P. Theorems, phylum, kings and girls were mysteries comparable to finding the Lost Continent. But determined we climbed and gradually came to the silverclouds above. Extra-curricularly we really tried and we were thrilled by our first dance-a Halloween Dance . Mid pumpkins, corn stalks and orange streamers . To bolster our treasure and help school spirit we sold schedule pencils, and too, we had a gala class party in anticipation of our Junior year. lst Row: G. Milliman, K. Wheeler, G. Paine, M. Happy and care- free we breezed through all those easy subjects as we eyed with delight, ond envied those dignified Seniors. We are impatient to show that we too are Ieoders. We had a class party and we are still nursing the bruises of our first skating party. To earn money we presented a one-actploy and sold candy during the noon hour. WE have gone one more step on our journey from Rags to Riches and we feel very important. We were off toa flying startwith a get-acquainted party early in the fall. To further social relations we held a skating party in March. We didn't neglect our studies either, because three of our members, - Martin Palermo, Carol Stephens and Willie Sheldon became Freshmen in January. Since our treasury was not over-stocked, we eagerly sold cards and candy to build itupa bit. S usual our band was a source of great pride. Though we lost many players, the infectious enthusiasm of the members brought in much unhatched talent and as a beautiful butterfly emerges from a cocoon so our band blossomed into a whole, a unit of beautiful music. Many of our stars attended All State at Jamestown, and they won many honors. The most fun came the day we played for the Cole Brothers Circus- from riches to rags? And then too, we startled the world with the iivy, gyration that issued forth from the music room. Our Dance Band practices rocked the building and our first public appearance at the Senior Carnival was c huge success. I5 I ff aggb if o 0 0'7 lst Row: D. Phillips, G. 'Scott, I. ROM Rags To Riches, was a favorite of most chorus members during this year, at least after we echoed Stephen Foster's favorites for our biggest proiect of the years, presenting An Old Kentucky Garden, March 24th. This was a real success and all proceeds went for our new chorus robes. , Our richest efforts were the Fall and Spring Concerts and the Fredonia Music Festival. The chorus has increased itself to sixty through much effort of our wonderful director, Mrs. Wells. The best of luck is wished to the Junior Chorus in its future year following in the steps of the Senior Chorus. X N HL O 00 SQHO ,.., 5 vga Q 'O 2 lst Row: K. Mosher, P. Tutton, M. Weaver, B. Plans this year included selling Ford Almanacs, Robinson seeds and renting out the crop sprayer which we built. Through the efforts of Donald Phillips we were able to rent a tractor ond we used it to corry out our Crop Demonstration Proiect at the site of the new school land. We also reseeded the old baseball diamond. We entertained the P.T.A. at their November meeting. A delegate was sent to the State F.F.A. Convention ot Cobleskill .
