Q M T' The birthday of George Washington was commemorated at Pine Grove Area Ioint High School with an appropriate assembly program, reviving the memories of the historical-minded by a return to the days of Louis XIV and George and Martha Washington. The pageant, entitled A History of the Minuetf' was beautifully portrayed by groups of students wearing the costumes of the eighteenth century. The first scene portrayed a ball at the court of Louis XIV where the Minuet was danced for the first time. The second scene showed an afternoon and evening of festivities in the home of George and Martha Washington, where the Minuet was danced on all state occa- sions. A prologue, giving a brief history of the origin of the Minuet, opened the pageant. The first scene depicted courtiers and their ladies making merry and finally dancing the Minuet. The play then left the Old World and portrayed servants and master preparing for a ball at the home of George Washington. Dancing by the children was one of the features of the next scene. The climax to the activities of a busy day was a ball held in honor of the mas- ter of the house. In a beautiful setting, brilliantly lighted, members of the Senior Class joined in an excellent characterization of the Minuet. All of the participants were members of the Class of 1953 with the exception of the children taking part. The production was under the able direction of Mrs. Bruce Christ, teacher of social studies. The dances were directed by Mrs. Lee Raybuck and Mrs. Arthur Kline. Stage arrangements and decorations were under the supervision of Mr. Paul Bowen and Mr. Iohn Musselman. Rosalie Werley presided at the piano. The program was enjoyed by the assembly with a spontaneous applause expressing their approval. lt has been decided to make this an annual event. -77-
