PHOTOGRAPHERS Steve Jenkel Eddie Hill Janice Templeton Randy Corely Craig Williams Curt Duvall J. J. Mohr . . . Is to save everyday till’ eternity passes away Just to spend them with you. . . We've come a long way since the times of the one room school houses. Now the calculator has replaced the once indespensible slate board. But one thing about high school has not changed; as freshmen we still look forward to 4 years of promises, loves, fears, tears, and hopes to be fulfilled. Many of these dreams will come true. . . many will not. But whatever times are experienced in these 4 short years we will remember, cherish, and always look back and wish that we could put this “Time in a Bottle”’. . . . If I could make days last forever, If words could make wishes come true. . . We ain’t got a barrel of money, our clothes are ragged and funny, but we carry along singing our song, Side by Side. . . . ’d save everyday like a treasure and then, Again I would spend them with you. But there never seems to be enough time. . . You must remember this, A kiss is still a kiss, A sigh is just a sigh; The fundamental things apply, As time goes by. . . And when two lovers woo, they still say “I love you” on that you can rely, no matter what the future brings, As time goes by. . . Can’t you figure it out, Gina? . . . Todo the things you want to do once you find them. I’ve looked around enough to know, That you’re the one I want to go through time with. Peek-a-Boo Carla. Memories light the corners of my mind, Misty water-colored memories Of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, Smiles we gave to one another For the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, Or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again, Tell me would we? Could we? Memories may be beautiful, and yet, What’s too painful to remember we simply Choose to forget. So it’s the laughter we will remember, Whenever we remember the way we were. THE WAY WE WERE. It has become a tradition for clubs, organizations, and individual groups to sponsor money-making projects for the Heart Fund. Twenty-five years ago on March 13, 1952, the PCHS student body dedicated the Mary Kuykendall Carpenter Heart Fund Memorial and presented the charter in a special assembly to Mrs. Helen Kuykendall. Mrs. Kuykendall was then the librarian and senior honors English teacher at PCHS. Her daughter, Mary, had been graduated from PCHS on May 31, 1943. When she was only 26 years old, Mary died as a result of heart disease on March 3, 1952. The students had felt a keen and sincere sympathy for Mrs. Kuykendall, and from their desire to express their feelings came the proposal by the Student Council for this memorial. Since that time, each year during February, the Student Council has assumed leadership in the annual community drive. The first annual contribution was sent to the American Heart Association in 1953, and it was specified that the full amount be used for research. Since 1953, the PCHS student body has sent in no less than $1000 each year. The George Washington Freedom Foundation Award was given to PCHS in recogni- tion of this project in 1954. We have collected and donated more than $35,000 over the past years. Since 1973 an annual donation has been given to the Pinckneyville Com- munity Hospital to purchase needed equipment to check, monitor, or treat peo- ple with heart problems. ——_ CNS +i lz if A Well, no one’s perfect! Brad and “do their thing” during the variety show. MINI-COURSE SESSION Some of the courses were work... Some were interesting... Because of bad we ather this winter, there were no days left for a spring vacation. Rather than have regular classes on these days that we had to be in school, we had a Mini-Course Session. A new schedule involved teachers, guest speakers, and students in various types of classes that were different from routine, but it was also an effort to teach new skills and improve others. Most students and teachers felt that the Session was an interesting and profitable experience. The Mini-Course Session was part of the Gifted Education Program in our school, a program that identifies and works with students who have special talents in the areas of general intellectual ability, specific academic aptitude, creativity, visual and performing arts, and leadership. Courses involving students in each of these categories were offered during the Mini-Course Session. Some were surprising and... Some were fun! Students learned architectural drawing... Head-stands... Photography... Archery... and, to lay around. 1977 SWEETHEART QUEEN AND ESCORT: CHERYL PLACE AND KEITH RIDGEWAY 1ST Maid, Laurie Taucher; Escort Brett Morton 2ND Maid, Liz Dudek; Escort Bob Heisner 3RD Maid, (Tie) Jill Helvey; Escort Steve Baily 3RD Maid, (Tie) Mary Tanner; Escort Todd Rushing 4TH Maid, Cindy Pursell; Escort Mark Hale 1977 PROM QU MAGERKURTH AND JIM FISHER P - lst Maid Becky Beninati; Escort Larry Louis 3rd Maid Jill Helvey; Escort John Cacioppo = ra 0 A o © Z, P 02 ra = = iS YP = = PROM We 1st ROW: Kirk Hawkins, Randy Corley, Brian Morton, Dike Hamilton. 2nd ROW: Crystal Hankla, Bill Timpner, Kim Nehrkorn, Mark Smith. 3rd ROW: Sandy Bigham, Mary Urbaneck, Rose Mann, Margaret Kellerman, Beth McClurken, Steve Hull, Bonnie Pick, Dale Winter, Steve Crumbacher. Taking it easy. The Seniors went to Nashville, Tennessee for their class trip. When they arrived on Friday, the group took a tour of Nashville. They saw where some of the famous country singers lived, and then toured the Grand Ole Opry House, which is also known as the Reidman Auditorium. They also visited the Parthenon and Country Music Hall of Fame. That night some of the Seniors went swimming. Saturday the Seniors went to Opryland. There they rode all kinds of rides, saw live country music, and shopped at the gift shops for souvenirs. That night they saw Tanya Tucker, Hank Snow, Ernest Tubb, and Doc Severnson at the Grand Ole Opry. Sunday came time to start packing. But first, the Seniors went to the Hermitage. This is where Andrew Jackson lived with his family. They also toured Tulip Grove, where Andrew Jackson’s nephew lived. Andrew Jackson built the house himself for his nephew as a wedding gift. Wishing his kids could have played the whole season the way they played the last quarter of their schedule, Coach Corn felt they may have advanced further than just the Sectional final. Winning their own Regional, the Panthers were to be rooted out of play in the final game of the Sectional by Marissa. Ending the season with a mark of 17 wins to 12 losses, the Panthers proved to the school and their fans they were a team with spirit and pride. You admire athletic prowess? They’ve got it. You want a hero who won’t let you down? No way. You want a hero you can look up to? Someone your own age? You got it. I offer you the 1977 Special Olympics Teams from the United States...400,000 kids who ran races in their wheelchairs, track and field on crutches, played volleyball, and swam. The teams this month competed and racked up 400,000 medals. Everyone who comes across the finish line gets a medal and a hug. Their motto is ‘Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.’ The stories that come out of this competition are enough to bring tears. The volleyball game where the coach was screaming ‘WIN,’ and one of the players walked off the floor over to the coach and said, ‘I couldn’t hear you with all the noise. What do you want?! The runner who, when the gun went off, put his hands over his ears. The sprinter who was leading, but who went back to pick up her fallen friend. No heroes? Believe me, no one feels so tall as when he stoops to put a medal around a Special Olympian”. Erma Bombeck; Southern Illinoisian, May 19, 1977. Never will there be another person like her... or one we have loved as much. She taught us to be ourselves... She gave her time to help us... and she helped us make beautiful memories, which will always be with us. In Loving Memory Of Kaye Olson By Cindy Pursell Lil WALSWORTH Marceline, Mo., U.S.A
