1 i pi ■ rJHHH EDITORS Patricia Needham Joy Cox DEDICATION A school is many things--it is the things you see with your eyes, the things you hear with your ears, the things you learn with your mind, the things you feel with your heart. A school is timber and beams and brick and mortar and windows and doors which make up the physical plant of the greatest institution of America. A school is the citizens of the community and the State, who have planned and dreamed and worked and prayed for the future of their children. A school is the administration from the state level to the local level, made up of public- spirited, far-seeing individuals who know that the strength of America lies in her young and who strive unceasingly to modify, improve, and strengthen our education system. A school is the unswerving devotion and self-forgetting service of dedicated teachers who mold and train the characters of their students according to the best that they know--the sublime literature, the awesome science, the record of man ' s achievements, the superb music, the high ethical accomplishments of the ages. A school is the children who gather within her walls, eagerly or reluctantly awaiting the dispensing of knowledge. It is their joys and achievements, their sorrows and disappointments; it is the best years of their youth. Above all, my friends--a school is love. It encompasses the love of statesmen for their country, the love of parents for their children, the love of teachers for their charges, the love of children for their school, their parents, their teachers, and each other. It is a self-forgetful love, born of devotion and respect for the more than fifty years of service rendered by our be¬ loved Pilot Mountain School. All these things, and more, our school has been to us and to all who have gone out from her portals. It is with sincere love and devotion that we humbly and pridefully dedicate the 1961 edition of Knob Whispers to the PILOT MOUNTAIN SCHOOL. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1961
