h mums ]95b Published By The Senior Class of PILOT MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL Pilot Mountain, North Carolina THE PILOT MOUNTAIN g-, • • V ; IS 4 toJ.v ' ur ' ? ' ,, i I tf GH sC HOOL e ' L ’ On our little high school campus, surrounded by the trees, Some lessons we have learned which do not come from books — From our classroom windows, each eager student sees The glory of the autumn, how lyric springtime looks. And the years we spent in learning are pictured by the leaves; As bracing autumn paints them red and brown and gold. One by one they flutter down, and snow drips from the eaves — The mighty structure of the tree stands bleak and stark and cold. And then again bright springtime comes, ushered by the sun; The tree of learning quickens with burgeoning sap grown rife; The green and tender leaf buds mean appearing one by one, Like graduation day for us, commencement of new life. —MELBA Y. SIMMONS ELEMENTARY Mr. C. L. Smith has shown us what a grand person he can be. His pleasing smile and down-to-earth philosophy have become a cherished part of our school life. His services to the school will be remembered by many graduating classes, but we feel that it is especially appropriate that this class show some measure of appreciation at the end of his twenty-fifth year of maintaining our buildings and grounds. The dedication of the 1956 Knob Whispers is our way of saying, Thank you, Mr. Charlie!” Administration PRINCIPAL MR. B. H. THARRINGTON The principal, school board, and teach¬ ers of Pilot Mountain School have done much to the betterment of the students ' life. Their interest in our work has in¬ spired us to do our best and to work toward the goal of success we hope to reach. SCHOOL BOARD MR. W. M. MATTHEWS Chairman R. J. Each class carries us one limb higher up our tree. The last four classes of school are perhaps the most important. As we climb the limbs of the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior years, we are looking forward to the time when we can step over the last limb and succeed by reaching the top. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS NAT SWANSON MARY LAWSON DONALD FULK GAIL KEY President Vice-President Treasurer . . . Secretary On these pages appear the faces of the classmates with whom we hare shared so much . . . the first day of school in September, 1944 . There were one hundred eleven of us then . . . playing hop-scotch, jumping the rope, shooting marbles, playing wild fox . . . finger painting, chapel pro grams, spelling contests, drawing maps, and making posters . . . Eighth grade graduation, how proud we were! Sixty of us became green little freshmen . . . with tears and adjustments . . . Then we began taking part in high school life . . . using the library . . . science lah . . . changing classes . . . athletics ,.. clubs ... class rings . . junior-senior banquet . . . term papers . . . two-hour exams . . . speeches . . . tangents and ratios . . . trip to Washington and New York . . . All climaxed by donning our caps and gowns to receive those precious diplomas. All these are a part of some wonderful memories which will remain in our hearts forever. |g|| JEAN ALMOND JANE ARMSTRONG Senior Class MARGARET CATHERINE BARNES GLENNIE BEASLEY WILNA BEASLEY NANCY JO BOWMAN MARY JANE BOYLES RUTH BRINKLEY SAMMY BROWN BETTY LOU CHILTON MARY LOU COE SIBLE COLLINS VERNIE COOK JANE NEEDHAM GAIL DENNY SAMMY DEZARN DONALD FULK BETTY JEAN GEORGE BEVERLY GORDON STEVE GWALTNEY HELEN HIATT LIBBY HILL VIRGINIA INMAN RACHEL JESSUP STELLA JESTER SHIRLEY JONES SHELVIA JONES Senior GRAHAM JOYCE GRAY KEY GAIL KEY BOBBY KEY MARY LAWSON CELLIE LOWE BARBARA NEEDHAM C. Graham Joyce and Betty Lou Chilton—F.F.A. President and Editor of the Pilot” Pilot Mountain School provides many opportunities for students to participate in extra-curricular activities. Everyone has special interests and almost everyone has special talents which can be developed. School activities help to discover these. Band, shopwork, public speaking, piano and mixed chorus are a part of the school pro¬ gram. Another way special interests and abilities are developed is through membership in clubs ivhich are a part of the school’s extra-curricular program. When a pupil develops his special interests and talents, he gains confidence and becomes a happier and more useful person. Diane Jones and Sara Joyce—Freshmen Cheerleaders Sports One of the most significant leaves on the branch of education is athletics. It has held an honored place since the birth of education, for, from the time of the ancients, mankind has been concerned with the idea of developing a sound mind in a sound body. Here at Pilot Mountain High School, athletics has been strong physical health and to the develop ment of good sportsmanship, perseverance, and self-reliance. We are proud to devote this section to these young athletes ivho have made a great contribution to our school. First Roiv: Wayne Walker, Sammy Coe, Joe Fulk, Jimmy Reid, J. D. FOOTBALL First game Kick-off pass interception When the leaves begin to turn red and gold, our thoughts turn to football. As we look back on our first year of eleven-man football, we remember that an inch is as good as a mile.” That in¬ fernal inch defeated us; that extra point conquered us. However badly fate and fortune play¬ ed with us, the Terrors gave a good ac¬ count of themselves in every game, REX TUCKER Co-Captain STFVF GWALTNEY Captain COACHES touchdown bound beat Sandy Ridge 19-6! Third Row: Eileen Creasy, Manager, Mr. Hooks, Coach; Nancy Samuels. STEVE GWALTNEY As winter approaches and all the leaves fall from the trees, our athletic activity moves indoors. Basketball season is underway. Although only five boys can play on the first team, the success of any team depends upon all the boys on a squad. The second team boys, in their eagerness and willingness, inspire and help all the players. After posting a record of 8 wins to 9 losses in county play our boys really proved themselves by advancing to the semi-finals in the Surry County Tournament. RUTH BRINKLEY Co-Captain GAIL DENNY JONES BETTY HIATT The 1955-56 girls basketball season has been a highly successful one. The girls, led by co-captains Ruth Brinkley and Helen Hiatt, numbered among their successe s the Surry County season championship and Surry County Tournament Championship. The success of the team is shown by their 21 victories with but a single loss. Their strength is attested by the selection of Ruth Brinkley, Gail Denny, and Shelby Simmon on the. All-County team. Congratulations to the girts and their coach for such a fine eason.
