First,we were vaccinated to safeguard ourselves from smallpox. Then we entered into the first grade class of Miss Lela Gordon, under whom we began the studies of the three R’s-reading,’rlting,and ' rithmetic. Be¬ ing eager children,we quickly grasped the desired knowledge and passed on to the second grade. There we gained learning. The third grade brought somewhat harder lessons, and the fourth grade brought those dreaded examinations. Also, this grade brought book reports which have stayed with us ever since. The next several years were uneventful; that is, no great changes were made. We were delighted when,in May,19 5,we received those precious pa¬ pers called diplomas which stated that we had satisfactorily passed our elementary school work and that we could now enter high school. The ninth grade was our first real year of high school. Our class, somewhat smaller than it had been in 1937, finally became accustomed to having several teachers and to changing classes. During our first high school year,Carole ' Key was president of the class.Activities became more num¬ erous and subjects,of course, became more difficult, but we managed pass with, shall we say, flying colors. The year 1946-47 found us in the tenth grade with Glenna Fulk as president. We felt very important, because we could now say we were taking algebra, not just plain . irl hmetlc. At the present we are busy juniors. We presented a well-liked three act, mystery play, The Zombie ,in January. We do not believe In all work and no play;therefore,we have managed to have a few social gatherings. Next vear we‘11 be Seniors. What we will be in 1950 caruiot say,but we are sure that bur reflections of our shcool days will be happy ones. to I .elvin Kivett V resident) Irene Joanson (Secretary) Ruth Cox (Treasurer) June Adams betty Sennett Peggy Blizzard Grey Boyles Carl Brinkley Genieve Brinkley Janes Brinkley Mildred Cooke Rachel East Mack Edv ards June Fllnchum Charles Fowler Wade Francis Spencer Hill Louise Jessup Mary Jones Bobby Barnes (Vice-President) ir ' hil Kirkman Ruth Langley Betty Martin Billy Mldklff Robert Mills Carlyne Needham Curtis Needham Roger Needham Carolyn O ' Brien Mary Patterson Joe Allen Redman Jacqueline Sam£- Iman billy Simmons Opal Simmons Lavinia Simmons John R. We have an enrollment of 702 pupils instructed by 17 teachers. These teachers,alert,well-trained and efficient,u3e every available means to develop each child to the limit of his possibilities. To aid in this program, the school has met all requirements for dardization. As a result, we have a central library located near front entrance in the old building. On the shelves are 2500 books classified according to the Dewey Decimal System. In addition to there are five sets of standard reference books, a minimum of four of supplementary readers. Each year we discard badly worn books, those which contain obsolete material. On the other hand, we purchase yearly about - 00 worth of books from the North Carolina approved list. The school also owns a combination radio and record dozen records and two albums. We have a national movie some educational films. With the above mentioned facts and figures in mind, why we point with pride to the elementary department of stan- the all this, sets and player, three projector and does one ask our school.
