Founded in 1889 as a result of the work ofDrs. W.C. Condit, Samuel B. Alderson, and James P. Hendricks, the institution opened under the name of Pikeville Collegiate Institute with the Reverend Da- vid Blyth as principal and also pastor of the Presby- terian Church in Pikeville. In 1909 the Articles of Incorporation were amended. The name was changed to Pikeville College and the school was empowered by the Commonwealth of Kentucky to confer degrees.

Dedication is the devotion shown by Lee and Ruth Scott in the short time they were at Pikeville College. The Scotts donated much time to the col- lege and were loved by all who met them. Because of their dedication they received the 1982 HONARY ALUMNI A WARD. Dr. and Mrs. Scott came to Pikeville from Granville, Ohio. Lee Scott, Visiting Professor of Philosophy and Religion, was forced to retire at the age 65 and showed great desire to continue teaching. When the retirement age was changed to 70 Lee began to search for a new position. President Hall heard of his availability and approached him about a teaching position at Pikeville College. He came here in the Fall of 1979 and his wife, Ruth Visiting Professor of Psycholo- gy, followed him in the Spring 1981. Upon arriving to Pike- ville they began to love the mountains. They viewed the mountains as a sense of free- dom and respected the moun- tains and Pikeville College for what they stood for. The Scotts were with us for a short time, but while they were here their contributions to Pi- keville College were endless. By the donation of their time to continue teaching they have enriched the lives of the peo- ple at Pikeville College. The most unfortunate part of the Scotts leaving is that not all students had the opportunity to know them personally. Judy Hale 3 Dedication

In 1961, Pikeville College was admitted to membership as a four-year college in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, hav- ing had membership in that association as a junior college since 1931. Traditionally a liberal arts institution with an ex- pressed purpose of laying a sound foundation for broad cultural awareness, Pikeville College has gradually added career oriented courses and pro- grams to its offerings. A department of education has been maintained for more than thirty years, and more recently degrees have been made available in technology areas. Preparation for entry into such prefessional school as medicine, law theology and engineering has also been available at Pikeville Col- lege for a number of years. The goverance of Pileville College rests with the Board of Turstees of which Mr. Charles Chrisman is currently chairman. Dr. Jackson O. Hall was appoint- ed president of the college in March, 1975. 5 Pikeville College
