BP SSffi . . :β’Β ... 192 PMCEVfLLEC- tGg Pi ; ;Y Dedication is the devotion shown by Lee and Ruth Scott in the short time they were at Pikeville College. The Scotts donated much time to the col- lege and were loved by all who met them. Because of their dedication they received the 1982 HONARY ALUMNI A WARD. Dr. and Mrs. Scott came to Pikeville from Granville, Ohio. Lee Scott, Visiting Professor of Philosophy and Religion, was forced to retire at the age 65 and showed great desire to continue teaching. When the retirement age was changed to 70 Lee began to search for a new position. President Hall heard of his availability and approached him about a teaching position at Pikeville College. He came here in the Fall of 1979 and his wife, Ruth Visiting Professor of Psycholo- gy, followed him in the Spring 1981. Upon arriving to Pike- ville they began to love the mountains. They viewed the mountains as a sense of free- dom and respected the moun- tains and Pikeville College for what they stood for. The Scotts were with us for a short time, but while they were here their contributions to Pi- keville College were endless. By the donation of their time to continue teaching they have enriched the lives of the peo- ple at Pikeville College. The most unfortunate part of the Scotts leaving is that not all students had the opportunity to know them personally. Judy Hale 3 Dedication Pikeville College is nestled among the Cumberland Mountains, part of the Appalachian chain, in the Big Sandy River Valley. The pictresque Eastern Kentucky area in which the town of Pikeville is situated is accessible by way of federal highways 23, 1 19, and 460. Pikeville is served by Grayhound and Trailways bus lines. Jenny Wiley State Park and Breaks Interstate Parks are both within a thirty-five mile radius of the college. Opportunities for camping, swimming, hiking horse- back riding, as well as motel accommodations, are available at both locations. 4 Pikeville College β¬0% Pikeville College is a four-year, independent, co-edu- cational college affiliated with the United Presbyteri- an Church. Founded in 1889 as a result of the work ofDrs. W.C. Condit, Samuel B. Alderson, and James P. Hendricks, the institution opened under the name of Pikeville Collegiate Institute with the Reverend Da- vid Blyth as principal and also pastor of the Presby- terian Church in Pikeville. In 1909 the Articles of Incorporation were amended. The name was changed to Pikeville College and the school was empowered by the Commonwealth of Kentucky to confer degrees. 3Β«e mm 1. 3 !β¬ β¬ l nf 1955 the institution operated as a junior col- lege. Upper level courses were added in 1955-56, within the awarding of the first baccalaureate de- grees in May, 1957. In 1961, Pikeville College was admitted to membership as a four-year college in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, hav- ing had membership in that association as a junior college since 1931. Traditionally a liberal arts institution with an ex- pressed purpose of laying a sound foundation for broad cultural awareness, Pikeville College has gradually added career oriented courses and pro- grams to its offerings. A department of education has been maintained for more than thirty years, and more recently degrees have been made available in technology areas. Preparation for entry into such prefessional school as medicine, law theology and engineering has also been available at Pikeville Col- lege for a number of years. The goverance of Pileville College rests with the Board of Turstees of which Mr. Charles Chrisman is currently chairman. Dr. Jackson O. Hall was appoint- ed president of the college in March, 1975. 5 Pikeville College Happy Halloween! Tammy Newsome and Jennifer Ratliff stand qui- tely by, but what are they really thinking. Pam Scott has Mark Johnson in handcuffs but she doesn ' t really be- lieve that he is guilty. m w 1 Vm ! W A -r: Charlese, Jackie, and Ruth take time out to rest during the festivities or are they really try- ing to figure our what is really going on. Does this mean the Honeymoon is over? Not when you are enjoying yourself as much as Jan and Harvey Tackett did at the big dance. Pam Wolford, Linda Rose, and Rhonda Stanley seem to be prepared for all the unknown events of this Bewitching Night and anxiously await the unforseen excitement. 8 Halloween PC Students tflrffir Β w Β 1 1 1 β i 11 1 H 1HHIHIH IJ 14 70 H OA7? The Halloween Party brought out all differsides to us all. As shown in picture at the top left, the devil in Eugene Sisco made him keep Little Miss Tiny Moore out way past her bedtime. Bottom Left, Brett Petterson showed the Toga is a versatile piece of clothing that is a hit at any party. But, all contest must have a winner, so after a hard decision the win- ner was chosen, and who else but CHARLES REDMAN who changed his style completely, and showed wearing a slinky sweater and a tight fitting skirt. All in all the Halloween Dance turned out to be a big success of the Student Government Association. 9 Halloween The Latest In Jerri Ward, Teresa Chop Ray, and Jane Wallace realize that the Punk style can be as creative as you want it to be. Diana Davis wonders if Punk is where it ' s at. Bonnie Lawson wants to know if this is her Blind date! Selena Brown seems to be getting into it! 10 Punk Rock unk Rock It appears that meditation is what set the mood for Valerie Hale and her date. Becky Martin proves that Punk is all in how you move. Blues Brother Bobby Baker is on a mission to Punk Out with Cool Trade Estep. p u n k R o V-fc x. ββ Β k (Above) Tommy Terry punked beside the wall and Rose Smith rocked to the sound. Meanwhile, Selina Brown, Reberta Wil- liams, Becky Martin, Lynn Perry, and Ja- net Keene model their own creations for the Punk Rock Dance (at bottom left). (Bottom right) Jeff Scott and Jeri John- son find a quite moment to relax from all the action. On November 17, P.C. students punked out with the Stray Cats and other great sounds of the new wave. There was a tremendous turnout ofpunkers at the first Punk Party sponsored byS.G.A. It was awesome, totally awesome! The headbands, wild Devo glasses, long sweatshirts, tight fitting mini skirts, and wild colored tights were a part of the punk scene. S3! ? 1 ' i β β r i l Pfc 1 kr 4 β’Β«n i . X ft ' ' 1 1 jp ' β’β’ Left, e Outing Club, lead by J.D. Christie celebrated Founders Week by lighting up the campus in style. The Outing Club worked hard to prepare several illuminating lights which were distributed over the entire campus. After dark on Founders Day the candles were lit and so was Pikeville College. Melissa John- son was shown enjoying the canoe races after all the work of organizing the event. Founders Day Activities Rick Ryver, Jeff Hershner, Steve Priode. and Craig Coleman unload their ca- noe for the big race down the Big Sandy. The talent show consisted of many talented students. Tied for first place was Summer Breeze and The Trio. 2nd place went to Pam Scott. Pictured Shelvy Rifle, John Norris, Valerie Hale, Jimmy Go- ble, Pam Scott, Steve Johnson, Carol Click. 13 Founders Day Highlights Of Founders ' Day Activities required participation from many students. Bonnie Lawson resorted to the ner- vous habit of biting her finger nails before canoing down stream in the annual canoe race. Lynn Perry and Lesia Sizemore decided they would only be spectators at this sporting event. Looks like George Diamond really got into a race of his own as he ran the 99 and defeated them with record breaking time. 14 Founders Day Founders Day Outing Club Sponsor David Sutherland answers questions about canoeing from amateur canoers be- fore attempting the unexpected. Sandra and Jamie wonder if Mike and Troy will make it back without getting soaked! The illusion of lights on the walkway of the Science Building showed the beautiful side of Founder ' s Day Activities. 15 Founders Day Canoing Down The Big Sandy Rick Ryver and Rick Garbrielson seem to know what they are doing! Did these members of the Baseball team, Priode, Hershner, Ryver, and Gabrielson get all washed up? Troy Rutherford and Mike May smooth out the rough spots. Getting wet never hurt anyone as Mike and Troy work their way upstream to get ahead in the race. 16 Founders Day SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS for the 1982-83 year are: JANE WALLACEβ Vice President, TOBY SPRADLIN β Secretary, KAREN BOLEYN β Public relations Chairperson, BRENDA MURPHYβ Treasurer, JERRI WARD β S.G.A. Chop (Bottom Left) seemed to have no trouble in putting up her shot. Libby runs with the ball as she comes out of her last Homecoming game with a win for P.C. Sweetheart Dance 57 Vicki McClellan Remember Vicki McClellan Dorm Mother of Condit Hall, was suddenly taken from all the people that loved her and from her many friends here at the College. Vicki was a teacher at Harold Elementary and was on her way home when her life was suddenly taken in an auto- mobile accident. She was unusual not for the details of her life, but for the subtle effect she had on those around her, she was a bright spot on the Pikeville College Campus. Vicki had a way of reaching inside us and making our lives better just by know- ing her. In her duties as Dorm Director she found time to be a friend to the girls. She would listen to their troubles, endure their jokes, and share their gossip. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Vicki ' s death was not tragic, because her life was not trag- ic. It was victorious, if only be- cause she left us a legacy of thoughtful goodness. Vicki was such a special per- son, that even though our sadness may fade away, our love for Vicki and the memo- ries we have of her will live forever in our hearts. 58 Me Forever Dr. Leonard Roberts, scholar, folk- lorist, humanist, researcher, educa- tor, storyteller,, humorist, editor and publisher was also taken from the college in a tragic automobile acci- dent. Dr. Roberts had come to Pikeville College in 1968. He said he had re- turned because of his love of the mountains and the down-to-earth people of Eastern Kentucky. He spent his life learning about the area and the people he loved. His stories about the people have bought him fame nationally and internationally. Dr. Roberts always got involved in the life at the college. At Hillbilly Days in mid April he spent many hours on the street selling Pikeville College Press books. Then on April 14 he led the square dance at the Annual Dance Recital. Dr. Roberts had a way of teaching the people of this area more about themselves than they had ever real- ized. He taught them to be proud of who they were. Dr. Roberts face will be missed next year, but through the books he has written and stories he has told he will live forever. He attended Darthmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire and received his doctorate from Cornell University in 1967. The past year has been a testing time for President Hall and Pike- ville College. Dr. Hall has seen the College through many misfortunate budget cuts, but he is confident that the college will arise a stronger institution because of the faith of the people that surround the institution. Putting togeth- er a yearbook takes many hours of dedicated work as well as a desire to produce something the students can be proud of. This book was produced for no one individual but for everyone that they might recall the joyful events of ' 83 ' at Pikeville College. The yearbook staff dedi- cates this book to you, the stu- dents, faculty, and staff, with hopes that you will enjoy it. A FRIEND IS (SOMEONE WHO KNOWS AH. ABOUT YOU, BUT. LIKES TOU ANYWAY- The production of this book would not have been possible without the help of many dedicated people. A special thanks goes to Tom Brush, our Josten ' s Repre- sentative, Marian Yarns and Brenda Hicks, our advisors, and Susan Huffman for the many contributions they made. A new editor always needs advice so I would like to thank Brenda Hamilton and Jerri Ward, Advising Editors, for their con- tinued help and support until the book was finished. Thanks to Sherry May for the long hours she spent working on this book and Devena McCarty, Donna Chaney, and Carol Deny for all the typing they ' ve done. Without pictures what is a yearbook? Thanks to all our Olan Mills photographers, especially Jack Tester for the many hour he spent taking pictures through the rain of homecoming and the heat of graduation. Thanks to everyone who has helped in any way, especially staff members. 192 Editors Page
