The Pep Band, under the direction of Jim Andy Caudill, played and the Homecoming attendants were introduced. A new event added to the list of Homecoming activities was a decorating competition between Page and Condit Hall. The men came out as winners with Page Hall collecting first place. One of the largest Hoemcoming parades was held the following morning in downtown Pikeville, beginning its trek from the college gymnasium at 10:30. Five high school bands participated along with the college Pep Band, featuring Stuart Claus. Other participants were the 1978 Mountain Laurel Representative, Kathi Mullins Caudill, 1977 Homecoming Queen, Kay Blackburn, 1978 homecoming attendants, Bear mascot, basketball team, coaches, Student Government Association Officers, and the Dean and Assistant Dean of Students. Marcia McClanahan Smith was crowned 1978 Homecoming Queen by Dr. Tom Johnson and 1977 Queen, Kay Balckburn, during half-time ceremonies at the Pikeville High School Gymnasium. The basketball game didn ' t prove exciting, for the Bears went down in defeat to the Berea Mountaineers with a score of 95-76. Razz Matazz topped off the Homecoming festivities as college students, alumni, and faculty members danced the night away from 8 until 12 to their music. Afterwards, everyone ventured to parties or the Star Lite Bowling Alley where free bowling and pool were offered to those who came. A breakfast ended the early morning reacreation. All Homeocming activities were sponsored by the Student Government Association. The organization, established to recognize the future leaders of America, printed its first book of listings in 1934-35 containing information on 1300 students from 250 colleges around the country. This year, there were 28,000 students from 1200 colleges and universities. What does it take to become a Who ' s Who candidate? First of all, a student must have a 2.75 average, show interest in extra curricular activities, be of good character, and demonstrate promise for the future. The number of Who ' s Who members that a college may elect depends upon the enrollment of the institution. This year, 16 students were elected to the membership from the Pikeville College student body. Laurel 130 Editor ' s Note Being Editor of the 1979 Highlander was an exciting and rewarding job. It brought with it many hours of work and headaches but good memories are far more outstanding. The book represents a single effort of the editor. A very special thank you goes to Jerry Martin, the main photographer for the book. Without Jerry this book would not have been possible. I would also like to thank the other photographers. Lee Shaw, Sandy Branam, and Sara Falls were a tremendous help to me. I was backed by student photographer, Steve Collier. Last, I would like to thank Jack Tester, our photographer from Olan Mills. It ' s been quite a year! Lisa Billiter Editor-in Chief Editor 131 JOSTsNS y= m3oo( com=uwv «1
