DAMRON Dr. Rediford Damron The closing of the 1976-77 school year not only meant departure of the graduating seniors, it also marked the retirement of a faculty member that had become an institute at Pikeville College . Dr. Rediford Damron came to Pikeville College in 1946 as head of the education department at the Training School and he saw the facility grow from a Junior College to a four-year institution with a graduate consortium. During his thirty years at Pikeville College this versatile man filled many capacities , he taught in the Sociology Department and served as Academic Dean, was Vice- President for Academic Affairs , and was appointed Provost from 1965-1967. Dr. Damron was honored with the Distinguished Almus Award in 1974, and was named Distinguished Faculty Member in 1976. With his ability to serve wherever asked, Dr. Damron was a vital part of the college community. It is with great sadness we say farewell to this dedicated servant of the College. Our thanks for your concern for young people and the course of education in Eastern Kentucky. v Tf ?i mwn ?9 ■The Excitement Of Den Life FRESHMAN ORIENTATION m SENIORS CLASS OFFICERS President — Lee Burke Vice President — Sally Theis Secretary — Clarisa Elswick Treasurer — Denise Burgy S.G.A. Now and then, however, there is a bright spot among our seemingly distressing work days. For the past 12 years, Erma Bartley has been such a bright spot on the campus of Pikeville College. Mrs. Bartley has managed the bookstore at Pikeville College since September 1, 1965. On Wednesday, August 10 she retired. It ' s been hard to leave, Mrs. Bartley said in her unassuming, direct, pleasant way. I ' ve really enjoyed my work and I ' ve learned a lot. But I feel like I have obligations at home now. Small wonder. Her house was badly flooded in April and the first item on her agenda after retirement is supervising the necessary repairs. But anytime they need me to help up here in (the bookstore), they can call me. The mother of two sons and a daughter, the grandmother of eight and the great grandmother of three, with another expected in February. Mrs. Bartley is quite proud of her family ' s associations with Pikeville College. Excusing herself during the interview to answer the bookstore phone, Mrs. Bartley ' s quiet voice could be heard saying I believe so, darlin ' . And off she went to the Bear ' s Den to find the person for whom the caller had asked. Returning to the interview, she commented that in her 12 years at the college she believes that everything has been changing for the better. The students in the lat e 60 ' s and early 70 ' s were more shook up, rattled. The students are quieter now, she observed. I ' m just a little cog in a big wheel, she states without dissatisfaction. But she ' s respectful, loyal, takes pride in her work and is definitely commited to Pikeville College. I ' m for Pikeville College. There ' ll always be a college on this hill if it ' s left up to me. And no one doubts her for a minute . 55 Spring Queen — Betsy Davis 56 Spring Formal 1977 Queen ' s Court 57 „ 58 59 FRESHMEN CLASS OFFICERS Bob Davis — President Ronnie Taylor — Vice-President Linda Thornsbury — Secretary Tammy Branham — Treasurer Jennifer Morton — S.G.A. While at Pike High he compiled an 82-59 won- loss record against many of Kentucky ' s largest and most powerful high schools . The personable Martin had inherited the unenviable job of restoring the sagging Pikeville College program to a state of respectability and competiveness it had once known, rne WU-za season had brought only nine wins in twenty-eight outings and Martin knew the road ahead would be most challenging. Martin immediately organized his recruiting efforts and knew that the signing of a quality player as quickly as possible would be a shot in the arm to the program and would lay the necessary ground of Pikeville, transfer Fred Fredrick of Cincinnati via More-head State the stage was set for Martins ' first KIAC championship and a 25-6 overall record during the 74-75 campaign. 70 The acquisition of LaBraun Andrews of Cincinnati, all- staters Vince Chambers and Robert Jones of Shelby County, all- stater Darius Henley of Logan and other area stand-outs over the next two years would assure Martin of continued success during his stay at Pikeville College. His accomplishments would include KIAC regular season and tournament championships again in 76 and 77 making three straight such titles, an unprecidented feat in the 20 year history of the KIAC - A district 30 championships and birth to the NAIA National Championship tournament in 1976 - Best winning percentage season in Pikeville College history in 1976, 26-5 record, 838 winning percentage - Williamson Holiday Classic Championships in 75 and 76 - Coach of the year honors in the KIAC in 75 and 77 - A four year record of 94-38 - 1975-76 team ranked 5th in the nation in the college division poll. Through highly efficient organizations, endless hours of recruiting and scouting and a total dedication to his profession, Coach Martin brought the Pikeville College basketball program to a level of National recognition and competitiveness in a short four year span. Noteworthy accomplishments will never be foreign to Coach Wayne Martin. May his future endeavors be filled with continued success .qxl 71 72 VICTORY 71 • M 74 75 US PIKEVILLE COLLEGE BEARS 1976-1977 BASKETS , ' P E , Happy Osborne Mike Mullins 76 mmm Head Coach Wayne Martin Assistant Coach Danny Adams ■J0 - I Jimmy Rogers - Trainer Randy McCoy - Manager 77 s s 5SkS ,«  ' V. Mr. Coe was killed in a two car collision near Gulnare. Joseph William Coe was born January 21, 1942 in Saltville, Virginia, a son of Marion and Edna Coe. Coe was a graduate of Pikeville College, as well as security guard at the college. In addition to his duties at the college, he was employed as part time radio announcer at W.P.K.E. Survivors include his wife Phyllis Coe, a step- son Brian Scott Lindsy, a sister Gerry Mike of Clintwood, a niece Holly Coe. Funeral services were held at the Clintwood Missionary Baptist Church at Clintwood. Pikeville College has mourned the passing of this great man, and will deeply miss his presence. A memorial service was held in Faith Chapel in order for the college to pay their last respects to a dedicated member of the College. The Joseph W. Coe Memorial Scholarship Fund was set up in honor of his desire for learning. 112 PAULETTA SMITH Representative To Mountain Laurel Festival 113 With the closing of this yearbook it is with deep appreciation that I express my thanks to the people who made this 1976-77 Highlander possible. First thanks must be given to my Assistant Editor, Lisa Billiter, and Business Manager, Randy Roberts, for the long hard hours of work and dedication. The hill we had to climb toward the completion of this book was steep but with great effort and determination as a group we made that climb with much more ease. A yearbook cannot be complete without pictures , and in this category we want to express our thanks and appreciation to Sara Falls and Ed Elder for their dedication. The Highlander strived to secure the memories of the past year here at Pikeville College. As we depart to undertake lifes task, we say good-bye to old friends . Yet we will always hold the memory of Pikeville College, our triumphs and defeats, our joys and sorrows which shall be everlasting to our memory.
