We stood in lines that never seemed to end . . . We anticipated those first few days of class, wondering if the new science building would be ready in time for that all-important biology class . . . We learned that some of our classes were already closed . . . We thought the day would never end . . . But then it was al over . . . 15 . . . A GREAT DAY FOR EASTERN KENTUCKY, — REP. CARL D. PERKINS A dance featuring Genesis at the college gym on Founder ' s Day Eve kicked off the activities. Founder ' s Day 1 972 marked both a look to the past, commemorating Pikeville College ' s eighty-third anniversary, and a look to the future, with the dedication of the Everett F. Arming- ton Science Learning Center and the presentation of an honorary degree to Dr. Armington. Other activities of the day included Q luncheon at the college dining hall, dedication of the Nor- man A. Chrisman Lecture Hall in the Science Center, and the traditional canoe race. That night, the Commu- nity Concert Association presented jazz pianist Peter Nero in concert. 16 FOUNDER ' S DAY a.  ?5. f ' ' ' 17 N 1 £ M w It s . w iu ■i ■ t V ' 3 k;; c - . 18 During Founder ' s Day week, the conversations of people in this area centered on one subject: Have you seen the moon rock? The campus of Pikeville College truly came to life that week. A small sample of the lunar surface, brought back by Apollo XV, was on display in the second floor lounge of the Science Center. People came from throughout the Tri-State Area of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia to see the moon rock. ri :,. 19 It was a year for performances by well-known rock groups on cam- pus. The Association played here in October, and Argent provided the music for the spring formal. 20 21 1 , m ,.:.,:.. i j 7 EL ! 1 f - ■ - 22 23 ♦■• jsr rtsi ss«i ws?! Pikeville has long been known as a major teacher educator in Eastern Ken- tucky. The photographic observation of student teacher Sue Reed on the opposite page shov s some of the aspects of a day in the life of a stu- dent teacher. On this page Joyce Murphy, Marcia Ratliff, and Vivian Wallace demonstrate how under- classmen gain teaching experience before the professional education semester. 25 26 I The basketball team took time out from their busy schedule to hold a clinic for youngsters from area ele- mentary schools. 27 A WALK TO FISHTRAP FOR THE RESCUE SQUAD ■ i % - _ i-ii w 4 j B W .. V : ' . - - y POSTSCRIPT Just as all good things must end, the year 1 972-1 973 came to a close. The first week in May always brings great joy — from being away from the books — but that joy is tinged with sadness from the realization that there are people we will never see again. Goodbye is a difficult word to say among friends, but we still have our memories. I have tried my best to share a few of mine with you; I hope you have enjoyed them. George W.
