The 1967 HIGHLANDER PikevHle College β’ Pikeville, Kentucky 1 PROSPICIAM TpV AD MONIES L ' im. EDITOR Shelby Stanley ASSISTANT EDITOR Elaine Battistello BUSINESS MANAGER Robert K. Allara ADVISOR Dean Howard Hoover Mrs. Christina Goodman ; The Pike i Man shall rest his wandering heart in the glory of God ' s mountains . . . and high in the nook of folded earth the music of the hills will echo His peace. The hills are a peace seen in the loftiness of towering peaks, in the shadows of sun-struck trees, and in the nestling of water-drenched valleys. Homes are made where the mountain sky dips gently to meet the idle green of a nurtured vallev. Homes are made and people live and love and die in the mountains ... in the mountains, where peace descends as an enveloping fog. β’ β’ β’ Is People . . . . with love, with smiles, with ambitions and dreams, with a past and a future . . . and with faces that reflect the heart of the college. L tA- The Pike is students sitting in the den . . . going to chapel . . . sharing college activities. These students are the people who will be tomorrow ' s teachers, leaders, and researchers, but today, they are merely the College Kid . . . . And More People At social gatherings, At practice for that moment on the stage. Or at a moment ' s contemplation of the day ' s events. In extracurricular activities and in academics, the student? at the Pike conscientiously strive for high achievement. m v ---imr mw-s-w -ff j Places . . . The Pike is a place of sundry places. There is the town . . . and the place of worship. It is a place of the great 89 steps upward to knowledge . . . and a place of friendly warmth as professors meet to discuss their harried schedules. The Pike can be a place of scenic beauty as shown by the Breaks Interstate Park. All places are a part of the whole, and all lend themselves to the making of one complete environment. Kool . . The Pike is often the scene for modem ideas β many of which are fads. The campus boasts the miniskirt . . . the paisley tie. One can see the shoe shine boy with his cheer- ful face as he casually strolls to meet his friends . . . who gi Q the luxury of a new hairstyle with no charge! The pierced ear look . . . the dangUng hoop . . . the feet bared in favor of independence . . . the people finding laughter in unusual ways ... all of these are the Pike ' s way of saying a campus can be as kool as a campus does. 13 Events . . . The most exciting world of a campus exists in the produc- ing of a play or the glow of a campfire. People seem to be swept up in the events . . . and to believe in the magic of make-believe . . . and to feel that happiness is part of the ' now ' on the Pike. Community Service . . . Community service is caring . . . knowing peo- ple ' s needs . . . and being willing to give one ' s heart, hands, and mind to the fulfillment of these things. The heart of the Pike is preparing a gen- eration for service in the world. { i a I Jib -.if P= Β« Moment of... Silence !n . V ' ; . ' i.- rv ;β’ -,r -y iJ β i . -v i i} :. : ki Freshman Class R.
