For each individual here, the story is different, but some things will always be familiar to us . . . the campus chats, the crowded cafeteria, and the search for knowledge. The 1963 Highlander has tried to recap- ture a few of these familiar moments for you, hoping that they will recall to you at least part of the spirit of Pikeville College. The past two years have brought us many new buildings: the Record-Memorial Building, the Student Union Building, Memorial Hall and Condit Hall. Doors opened, doors closed. Students hurrying to and fro! Noisy halls and happy calls, Lost things searched for high and low. Devotions, flag, announcements, They always start our day; We study first hour ' s lessons. Then to classes on our way. A multitude of noises: Strains of music, hums of saws. Bubbling test tubes, hurrying feet. Conjugations, rules and laws. Thinking of the days we ' ve spent Of learning on this Hill, We bind all our thoughts together For you to read at will. 1 FACULTY AND The faculty and administration of Pikeville College are well endowed with much talent and many years of experience. They have combined their talents and abilities not only to teach subject matter but also to in- clude: Wisdom Seriousness Integrity Humor Firmness Interest. 18 ADMINISTRATION It is with sincere regret that we as a faculty and student body say farewell to Dr. Page, but we are pleased that he will still be working for the college in the field of public relations. The administrative staff of Pikeville College has its share of both. Although these people are in the background, they are a vital part of our campus life and activities. It would be impossible for anyone to be- come a student at Pikeville College if it were not for our administrative staff. Barbara Conn Secretary Roberta Hoover Secretary Racine Ratliff Comptroller 21 DIVISION OF EDUCATION The chief aim of Pikeville College is to produce qualified teachers for the American educational system. Since more than 80% of the Pike- ville College graduates become teachers, the Division of Education is the most important division of campus. At no other college is there a better qualified leader to direct the Division of Education than Dr. Raymond Bradley. Dr. Bradley has dedicated his entire life to education. He is a member of many honorary educational societies and at present is acting president of Pikeville College. The Division of Education offers majors in secondary and elementary education, physical education and a minor in Psychology. These courses of study carry with them teacher certification. The Division of Education sponsors two clubs on campus, S. N. E. A. and W. A. A. The S. N. E. A. is an organization for future teachers while the W. A. A. is a women ' s activity club on campus. We welcome Max M. Miller and Clara Walsh to our faculty and hope that their stay is very pleasant. It is always nice to acquire new and interesting teachers for our faculty. Majors are offered in Music and Languages with minors in Enghsh, Music and Art. The Division is well endowed with capable and seasoned leadership in Dr. Anna Miller. Dr. Miller ' s entire life has been dedicated to the field of English and education. Under her are many talented and experi- enced cohorts who also are dedicated to their fields. The Parnassus Club which is sponsored by the Division of Humanities is a club for all English majors and minors. The club strives to increase within the student a better understanding and love for good literature. We welcome Olive Sarber, William Smith and Marion Kelley to our faculty. May their years on our faculty be happy and rewarding. Dr. Wray Miller has proven his abilities many times by his many years of service in the field of religion and education. The Division of Religion and Philosophy offers a minor in Religion and four years of work leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Theology. The Division of Religion and Philosophy sponsors our student Vespers and Student Christian Fellowship. All students are encouraged to participate in these activities because the College feels spiritual development is as important as the physical, academic and social. Unless all these facets are nurtured, the student does not become a well rounded individual. Alma Culton, Relisyion Dr. Neil Houk, Relioion DIVISION OF SCIENCE The Division of Sciences is divided into Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics with majors in Biology and Mathematics and minors in Biology, Mathematics, and Chemistry. Dr. E. E. Stanford is greatly responsible for the success of the Division. He is the author of our present Biology textbook and he spent many years at the College of the Pacific before coming to Pike- ville College in 1959. The Nature Club is sponsored by the Division for all Biology majors and minors. The club strives to increase the student ' s under- standing of biological concepts. We could ne er do such a thing. Pikeville College is proud to have such a man as Dr. Charles M. Knapp as chairman of the Division of Social Studies. Dr. Knapp spent many years at the University of Kentucky and at the time of his retirement was head of the Department there. We welcome this year Dr. Edwin Kingsbury to our faculty. Dr. Kingsbury is one of the few people who are specialists in the field of Cuneiform Studies. The Division of Social Studies offers majors in History, History and Political, Science, General Business, and Secretarial Science and also minors in these same fields. The Commerce Department of the Division of Social Studies sponsors the Business Club for all commerce majors and minors. The club was organized to give the students a better understanding of busi- ness functions. We welcome Marigrace Barnett to our faculty this year. Michael Dallett History and Pol. He was born at Algona, Iowa, where he attended the public schools. After graduating from high school, he attended Cornell College at Mount Vernon, Iowa, He did graduate work at the University of Minnesota in the fields of education and psychology. Before coming to Pikeville College m the fall of 1959, Dr. Bradley taught at the University of Wyoming, the Univer- sity of South Dakota, Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, Macalester College in Saint Paul, Illinois Wesleyan College, Highlands University in New Mexico, Northwestern University and the Univer- sity of Minnesota. Dr. Bradley is a member of the honorary scholastic society of Phi Kappa Phi. He also holds membership in two honorary societies in education. ATHLETICS 1(5 PAUL BUTCHER Head coach Paul Butcher is now in his fourth year at Pikeville. Coach Butcher received his education at Pikeville Junior College, Morehead State and at the University of Kentucky. He was Athletic Director at Pikeville High School for a year before being appointed Freshman Coach at Pikeville College in 1958 and had previously coached at Meade Memorial High School, his Alma Mater. As a schoolboy there he once held the individual scoring record for Kentucky High School players, and as coach there his best season was 1954-55, when his Red Devils won 32 successive games. As director of the Basketball and Baseball fortunes for the Bears he has a record of 58 wins against 23 losses in Basketball and 31 wins against 18 in Baseball. His Basketball teams have captured one KIAC crown and finished second twice.
