I really must be going. For would-be actors the Peach Orchard Play- ers provides their dramatic outlet. During the year several one-act plays are presented and last year ' s revival of the classic farce Charlie ' s Aunt was as funny as ever. The players hope to see an increase in number and activity when the new chapel stage becomes available for pro- ductions. Hey ! ! ! Members of the Parnassus Club find all of these in their bi-monthly meetings, under the guidance of Miss Talma Haney. Pro- grams are planned and presented entirely by members and may include the reading of favorite passages; listening to recorded poetry; discussions of varied topics; or criticism of original writing by students. The Record has been published in this way for the past two years. This year, for the first time, academic credit of one hour per semester has been given on an experimental basis to the mem- bers of the staff. This means that the work done by staff mem- bers has been graded — the same as would be the case in any regular course in composition, which, indeed, work on the stu- dent paper is. Copies of The Record have been made available free of added charge to all bona fide students; that is, it is a Student Activity Fee service, the same as is true with attendance at home games, attendance at Concert Associatio n programs, and the like. The publishers of The Pike Comity News have maintained a policy of leaving matters of editorial content in The Record strictly up to the staff and advisers from the college. MR. The Bears are a member of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Confer- ence and always rank well above average with teams of other colleges in the con- ference. Pikeville College maintains inter- collegiate athletic competition in basketball, baseball, golf, and tennis. The program is so arranged as to Uow participation in more than one varsity sport and further af- fords the athlete four years of varsity com- petition. 124 ■ ■ ATHLETICS mm mS S Paul Butcher, a graduate of Pikeville Junior College, holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from More- head State College. Before coming home to Pikeville College, Coach Butcher previously was mentor of Meade Memorial High School, where his Red Devils won 32 successive games. In three years as Head Coach of the Bears, his teams have compiled a 56 won, 33 lost, against stiff competition. In the past two years his teams have advanced to the final position of the NAIA play-off only to be beaten by 3 points in two games. In his first season his team lost to Villa Madonna College in an overtime. The second season his Bears lost what many spectators, radio announcers, and one referee thought should have ended 72-72. This years KIAC Tournament saw the Bears bow to Villa Madonna in the first game.
