Regular daily worship in the Chapel is a vitally important part of the student ' s life at Pikeville College. Here in the Chapel, the students come in contact with the finer things of life: good music, art, drama, lectures, sermons, and special types of entertainment. Here in the crowded pews many find that which they have searched for all their lives — Christ. cjpr n u ' ' clwiiies nyon m o rac e ? Your college classmates and ex- periences will be kept fresh in your mind as you review it. Each individual has made a place for himself by past conduct, but the years ahead will determine the final estimate of all. Each person, therefore, has the opportunity to build a reputation. My sincere hope is that every student enrolled in this HIGH- LANDER will build a great reputation and this can be done by constantly striving to give to life your very best. May God guide each of you to a most satisfying and useful life. A. A. PAGE 21 DEAN HOOVER DEAN DAMRON The unique function of the small church-related college is not only to give instruction in academic subjects, but to give the kind of training in moral and spiritual values that are difficult to attain on a large college or university campus. Pikeville College is small enough that it can give individual attention to the student in the classroom and in the various campus activities. It is our sincere hope that as students receive their degrees from this college that they will be better citizens in the communities in which they make their homes because they attended a college that not only had an academic emphasis, but tried to develop the spiritual and moral values of life as well. Starting with Freshman Orientation in September the Council kept busy throughout the year. The highlight of the year was the Christmas Dance which featured the Jimmy Dorsey Band with Lee Castle conducting. This project was sponsored jointly with the Circle K and was the first time a big name band had been on campus. Other activities sponsored by the council were: Founder ' s Day, Homecoming, Dance and Parade. An addition to Homecoming this year was a reception for the newly elected Homecoming Queen held after the Parade in the lounge of the Derriana. The Council feels that it had one of its most successful years and wishes to thank the student body for the fine cooperation that it gave the council whenever a major activity was planned. Her love of teach- ing and enthusiasm for life bubbles over in her every class. Challenging classroom teaching is not all Miss Elkins does, for her days are filled v ith numerous activities. She is sponsor of the Freshman Class, co-sponsor of the Student Council, serves on vari- ous faculty,, committees, is regularly a member of the May Day Committee and serves as hostess at college banquets just to mention a few of her extracurricular activities. She is also active in community and church affairs. For seven years she taught the College Age Sunday School class and in the evening the Westminster Fellowship group. The Woman ' s Club of Pikeville also uses her talents for book reviews and editor of the Golden Rod. For relaxation she likes to read, cook, and have small groups in for dinner. With all her other talents she is a good cook too. 99 Eliza Bell Compton This year was the first time Pikeville College participated in Who ' s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Each school is assigned a quota based on enrollment. Juniors, seniors, and graduate students still enrolled in the school are eligible for nomination. Nominees are selected by a campus committee on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, participation and lead- ership in academic and extracurricular activities, and general promise of future useful- ness to business and society. This committee was composed of faculty and students. The Committee of Pikeville College felt Eliza Belle Compton admirably met the requirements listed above.
