i i 14 I WILL LIFT UP MINE EYES? UNTO THE HILLS . . .   1 !■■ ■Ai PIKEVILLE COLLEGE • PiKEVILLE, KENTUCKY It is a joy to dedicate this book to MRS. ETHEL BEEM whose graciousness, devotion, and loyalty to Pikevilie College are shown every hour of every day. She is far more precious than jewels. Strength and dignity are lier clotliing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of l :indness is on her tongue. Regular daily worship in the Chapel is a vitally important part of the student ' s life at Pikeville College. Here in the crowded pews many find that which they have searched for all their lives— Christ. Here in the Chapel, the students come in contact with the finer things of life, including: good music, art, drama, lectures, sermons, and special types of entertainment. The Chapel is really the heart of Pikeville College. I !! THE PIKEVILLE COLLEGE AREA Tr7 :r::jr I I ' - ' H UNTINGTON Lexington KENTUCKY WEST VIRGINIA PIKEVILLE ; I N. w . MILES 20 40 60 80 100 C t If you place the point of a compass on the dot on the map representing the town of Pikeville, and inscribe a circle of a 50-mile radius, you will find that the circle encloses an area of just under 8,000 square miles, including parts of the states of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Within this circle there are half-a-million people not served by another four-year college. And yet their need for one is as great if not greater than that of any region of comparable size in the United States. The need for teachers, for trained and responsible Christian citizens, for competent professional men and women, is a critical one, for educational facilities have not kept pace with the demands of a rapidly growing population. Not long ago, someone asked President A. A. Page: How can you af- ford to take everybody in? His reply was typi- cal: How, he an- swered, can we afford not to? 1. PAGE RUSSELL GREGG BISNETT Vice President If the classic definition of a college education is Mark Hopkins on one end of a log and the student on the other, then here at Pikeville we have a great college. The opportunity for fellowship of mind and spirit as well as social activity between faculty and student body is unique. This charac- teristic of a Christian college is appreciated throughout the Synod of Kentucky and- the U.S.A. Pikeville stresses the balance between the dis- ciplines of work, worship, study and play. tl I DEAN HOOVER DEAN DAMRON The unique function of the small church-related college is not only to give instruction in academic subjects, but to give the kind of training in moral and spiritual values that are difficult to attain on a large college or university campus. Pikeville College is small enough that it can give individual attention to the student in the classroom and in the various campus activities. It is our sincere hope that as students receive their degrees from this college that they will be better citizens in the communities in which they make their homes because they attended a college that not only had an academic emphasis, but tried to develop the spiritual and moral values of life as well. In the process of compiling such an impressive record the Bears won the conference title with a 10-2 record. All five Bear starters averaged in double figures for the. year. Butcher, 22 points; Mullins, 17 points, Carroll, 15 points,- Setser, 13 points; and Woods, 11 points. Mul- lins led all rebounders with a 15 per game average followed closely by Woods with 14. In averaging approximately 93 points per game the Bears went over the century mark ten times and was ranked second in the nation offensively. PC OPP. Each student, through his splendid cooperation, has contributed markedly to its success. As President of the Student Association, I commend to you this yearbook, which is in reality a pictorial record of the activities you have participated in and of the acquaintances you have made here at Pikeville. In future years cherish these memories of your college days because in the end they will have been the ones that have contributed most to a richer and fuller life. May I personally wish each of you the best of luck for continued success in life. 84 s T U D E N T C O U N C I L CLAY DOTSON, Vice-President LILLIAN KEEN, Treasurer ARLENE JUSTICE, Secretary MR.
