Regular daily worship in the Chapel is a vitally important part of the student ' s life at Pikeville College. Here in the crowded pews many find that which they have searched for all their lives— Christ. Here in the Chapel, the students come in contact with the finer things of life, including: good music, art, drama, lectures, sermons, and special types of entertainment. MILES 20 40 60 80 100 C t If you place the point of a compass on the dot on the map representing the town of Pikeville, and inscribe a circle of a 50-mile radius, you will find that the circle encloses an area of just under 8,000 square miles, including parts of the states of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Within this circle there are half-a-million people not served by another four-year college. And yet their need for one is as great if not greater than that of any region of comparable size in the United States. The need for teachers, for trained and responsible Christian citizens, for competent professional men and women, is a critical one, for educational facilities have not kept pace with the demands of a rapidly growing population. Not long ago, someone asked President A. A. Page: How can you af- ford to take everybody in? His reply was typi- cal: How, he an- swered, can we afford not to? 1. Pikeville College is small enough that it can give individual attention to the student in the classroom and in the various campus activities. It is our sincere hope that as students receive their degrees from this college that they will be better citizens in the communities in which they make their homes because they attended a college that not only had an academic emphasis, but tried to develop the spiritual and moral values of life as well. The 1958-59 Pikeville College Bears playing only their second year in the Kentucky Intercol- legiate Athletic Conference compiled a record of 25 wins and 5 losses during regular season competition. In the process of compiling such an impressive record the Bears won the conference title with a 10-2 record. All five Bear starters averaged in double figures for the. year. Butcher, 22 points; Mullins, 17 points, Carroll, 15 points,- Setser, 13 points; and Woods, 11 points. Mul- lins led all rebounders with a 15 per game average followed closely by Woods with 14. In averaging approximately 93 points per game the Bears went over the century mark ten times and was ranked second in the nation offensively. PC OPP.
