MILES 20 40 60 80 100 + If you place the point of a compass on the dot on the map representing the town of Pikeville, and inscribe a circle of a 50-mile radius, you will find that the circle encloses an area of just under 8,000 square miles, including parts of the states of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Within this circle there are half-a-million people not served by another four-year college. And yet their need for one is as great if not greater than that of any region of comparable size in the United States. The need for teachers, for trained and responsible Christian citizens, for competent professional men and women, is a critical one, for edu- cational facilities have not kept pace with the demands of a rapidly growing population.
