ALBERT as an expression of our love and gratitude to one who was an inspiring example of integrity and knowledge, who showed an active interest in every phase of our college life, who gave him- self and his time without stint, and who stimu- lated our desire to reach the high goal which he set for us. Bright be the peace of thy soul! No lovelier spirit than thine E ' er burst from its mortal control In the orbs of the blessed to shine. On earth thou wert all but divine, As thy soul shall immortally be; And our sorrows may cease to repine When we know that thy God is with thee. BYRON SPECIAL COLLECTIONS ALLARA LIBRARY fHKEViLLE COLLEGE PIKEVILLF KY t 1 A$ «P %tW-:. W-i ' .$ THE CHAPEL Pikeville College not only outlines a Christian pro- gram— Pikeville College is a Christian program. Regu- lar daily worship service in the Chapel is a vitally important part of the student ' s life at Pikeville Col- lege. Here in the crowded pews many find that which they have searched for all their lives— Christ. Here in the Chapel, the students come in contact with the finer things of life, including: good music, art, drama, lectures, sermons, and special types of entertainment. The Chapel is really the heart of Pikeville College. THE PIKEVILLE COLLEGE AREA Lexington V- ' N J T1NGTON KENTUCKY t WEST VIRGINIA V. PIKEVILLE + 7 V i  w„. L- ' v.- - VIRGINIA . - ' Bristol fi- - „-..- .•-_■ --- . MILES 20 40 60 80 100 + If you place the point of a compass on the dot on the map representing the town of Pikeville, and inscribe a circle of a 50-mile radius, you will find that the circle encloses an area of just under 8,000 square miles, including parts of the states of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Within this circle there are half-a-million people not served by another four-year college. And yet their need for one is as great if not greater than that of any region of comparable size in the United States. The need for teachers, for trained and responsible Christian citizens, for competent professional men and women, is a critical one, for edu- cational facilities have not kept pace with the demands of a rapidly growing population. 4r, w, ■y . Tell of those in search of knowledge, Who have walked you many a time. To reach their goal in college, And make their lives sublime. Oh, how well you can relax them, With your beauty in the spring. As blossoms show the work of Him, Who made you a beauteous thing. LEAH DEANE TACKETT Class of 1958 Not long ago, someone asked President A. A. Page: How can you af- ford to take everybody in? WALKER Bluefield, West Virginia Emeritus PRESIDENT As the years pass, you will find that your HIGHLANDER will increase in value because it will become your book of memories. Your college classmates and experiences will be kept fresh in your mind as you review it. Each individual has made a place for himself by past conduct, but the years ahead will determine the final estimate of all. Each person, therefore, has the opportunity to build a reputation. My sincere hope is that every student enrolled in this HIGHLANDER will build a great reputation and this can be done by constantly striving to give to life your very best. May God guide each of you to a most satisfying and useful life. A. A. PAGE rf DR. RUSSELL GREGG BISNETT Vice President Pikeville College is happy to welcome Dr. Russell G. Bisnett to our campus this year. He will serve as the first vice president in the history of the college. The primary duties of the new vice president will be in the field of public relations. Dr. Bisnett comes- to us from the First Presbyterian Church, of Lodi, California. Besides his pastoral duties, Dr. Bisnett was active in the affairs of his Presbytery, Synod and local community. We know that Dr. Bisnett will find work on a college campus different than the pastorate but we hope he will find it just as challenging and rewarding. DEAN HOOVER DEAN DAMRON The unique function of the small church-related college is not only to give instruction in academic subjects, but to give the kind of train- ing in moral and spiritual values that are difficult to attain on a large college or university campus. Pikeville College is small enough that it can give individual attention to the student in the classroom and in the various campus activities. It is our sincere hope that as students receive their degrees from this college that they will be better citizens in the communities in which they make their homes because they attended a college that not only had an academic emphasis, but tried to develop the spiritual and moral values of life as well. Howard Hoover Dean of Students Rediford Damron Academic Dean •i, ■ IN MEMORIAM When Mr. Boyd Randall first came to Pikeville College as Acting Dean and mathematics teacher, he said, It is gratifying to be here at Pike- ville where I am free to read scripture, make comments, and pray in assembly. Mr. Randall lived his religion every day. Recently he was asking for Boy Scout contributions. This was only one of his community activities. Although his work as Dean from 1951 to 1953 kept him very busy, he never seemed tired and was always patient in his conferences with students and faculty. After Mr. Randall left the Deanship to become a faculty member, he willingly took charge of Chapel when his services were needed. His wise and witty remarks on such occasions were well received by the students. On the day of his death, Thursday, December 5, 1957, Mr. Randall was attending a meeting of the officers of the Pikeville Kiwanis Club of which he had been faithful secretary for your years. In 1954 and 1955, he was voted Pikeville Kiwanian of the year. He was active in the organization of Presbyterian Men in the First Presbyterian Church of Pikeville. Mr. Randall had been vigorously living the last of life for which the first was made. MARY RUTH ARNETT A. 6. Librarian LEE HAMPTON BALL A.B., A.M. English BLANCH S. BANTA A.B., A.M. Latin GEORGE E. This record was later broken by a local boy and now Freshman Coach at Pikeville, Woody Preston. While at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., Renfro was a regular on the record-breaking Indian team of 1949, and was awarded a Southern Conference Blue Ribbon award. Coach Renfro received his B.S. degree from Georgia Teachers College, Statesboro, Ga., where he played on the national offensive leaders in 1950 and is a mem- ber of the Kappa Delta Pi, national honorary fraternity.
